1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.	1 Son fils Judas, surnommé Maccabée, prit sa place;
2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.	2 ses frères et tous ceux qui avaient pris le parti de son père lui apportèrent leur concours, et ils menèrent le combat d’Israël avec ardeur.
3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.	3 Il étendit la renommée de son peuple, c’était un géant lorsqu’il revêtait sa cuirasse et prenait ses armes pour engager le combat. Son épée protégeait le camp d’Israël.
4 In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.	4 Dans les batailles, il était comme un lion, comme un jeune lion qui rugit après sa proie.
5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.	5 Il fit la chasse aux renégats, il les recherchait, il livra au feu ceux qui troublaient son peuple.
6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.	6 Il jetait la terreur parmi les renégats, ceux qui s’en prenaient à la Loi étaient effrayés, et grâce à lui, la libération fut menée à bien.
7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.	7 Il rendit la vie amère à plus d’un roi, mais ses actions mettaient Jacob en joie: sa mémoire sera bénie pour toujours.
8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:	8 Il parcourut les villes de Juda, il en extermina les impies, il détourna d’Israël la colère divine.
9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.	9 Son nom devint célèbre jusqu’aux extrémités du monde, lui qui a rassemblé ceux qui étaient perdus.
10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.	10 Apollonius rassembla des païens et beaucoup de gens de Samarie pour combattre Israël.
11 Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.	11 Lorsque Judas l’apprit, il sortit à sa rencontre, il l’assaillit et le tua; beaucoup tombèrent blessés à mort et le reste prit la fuite.
12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.	12 Lorsqu’on ramassa les dépouilles, Judas prit pour lui l’épée d’Apollonius; dès ce moment il s’en servit toujours dans les combats.
13 Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;	13 Séron, le général de l’armée de Syrie, apprit que Judas avait réuni autour de lui beaucoup de croyants et d’hommes de guerre.
14 He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.	14 Il se dit alors: “J’ai l’occasion de me rendre célèbre et de me couvrir de gloire dans le royaume. Je vais combattre Judas et ses hommes qui méprisent les ordres du roi.”
15 So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.	15 Il arriva donc à son tour avec une puissante armée d’impies pour tirer vengeance des fils d’Israël.
16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:	16 Comme il approchait de la montée de Beth-Horon, Judas sortit à sa rencontre avec peu de monde.
17 Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?	17 En voyant le détachement qui s’avançait contre eux, les hommes de Judas lui dirent: “Comment pourrons-nous lutter contre une si forte troupe, étant si peu nombreux? De plus nous sommes sans forces, car nous n’avons rien mangé aujourd’hui.”
18 Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:	18 Judas leur répondit: “Ce n’est pas difficile que beaucoup d’hommes soient vaincus par un petit nombre. Pour le Ciel c’est la même chose de donner le salut avec beaucoup d’hommes ou avec peu de monde:
19 For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.	19 sachez qu’à la guerre la victoire ne va pas aux plus nombreux, car c’est du Ciel que vient la force.
20 They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:	20 Eux s’avancent contre nous pleins d’orgueil et d’impiété, ils veulent nous exterminer, nous, nos femmes et nos enfants, et prendre nos biens.
21 But we fight for our lives and our laws.	21 Mais nous, nous défendons nos vies et nos lois,
22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.	22 et le Ciel les brisera devant nous. N’ayez pas peur d’eux!”
23 Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.	23 Lorsqu’il eut fini de parler, il se jeta sur eux à l’improviste: Séron et son armée furent écrasés.
24 And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.	24 Ils les poursuivirent dans la descente de Beth-Horon jusqu’à la plaine; 800 hommes environ tombèrent et le reste s’enfuit vers le pays des Philistins.
25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:	25 On commença à redouter Judas et ses frères et la crainte s’empara de toutes les nations d’alentour;
26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.	26 même le roi connaissait son nom et toutes les nations parlaient des batailles de Judas.
27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.	27 Antiocus entra dans une grande colère lorsqu’il l’apprit; il donna l’ordre de rassembler toutes les troupes de son royaume, une armée formidable.
28 He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.	28 Il ouvrit son trésor et donna aux troupes leur solde pour un an, avec la consigne d’être prêts à tout.
29 Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;	29 Il s’aperçut alors que l’argent manquait dans ses coffres et que les impôts de la province avaient diminué à cause des divisions et autres maux: lui-même les avait provoqués en supprimant dans le pays des lois qui existaient depuis toujours.
30 He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.	30 Autrefois il distribuait généreusement des cadeaux, plus que ne l’avaient fait les rois qui étaient avant lui; mais maintenant il avait peur de manquer, de ne pas avoir assez pour faire face aux dépenses.
31 Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.	31 Comme il se voyait dans de sérieuses difficultés, il décida de se rendre en Perse pour percevoir les impôts des provinces et revenir avec beaucoup d’argent.
32 So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:	32 Il laissa donc Lysias, un noble de la famille royale, pour s’occuper de ses affaires depuis l’Euphrate jusqu’à la frontière d’Égypte.
33 And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.	33 Lysias devait prendre soin de son fils Antiocus jusqu’à son retour.
34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:	34 Il lui confia la moitié de son armée avec les éléphants et lui donna ses ordres à propos de tout, et particulièrement au sujet des habitants de Judée et de Jérusalem.
35 To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;	35 Il devait envoyer contre eux une armée pour écraser, éliminer les forces d’Israël et le petit reste de Jérusalem, pour qu’on n’en parle même plus dans cette ville.
36 And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.	36 Après quoi on établirait des étrangers sur tout le territoire et on leur distribuerait les terres.
37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.	37 Le roi prit avec lui l’autre moitié de l’armée et quitta sa capitale d’Antioche en l’an 147; il traversa l’Euphrate et s’enfonça à travers les provinces de la montagne.
38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:	38 Parmi les amis du roi, Lysias choisit Ptolémée, fils de Dorimène, Nicanor et Gorgias, tous des hommes influents.
39 And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.	39 Il envoya avec eux 40 000 fantassins et 7 000 cavaliers pour envahir et ruiner le pays de Juda selon l’ordre du roi.
40 So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.	40 Gorgias se mit en marche avec toute son armée et il arriva près d’Emmaüs dans le Bas-Pays; là ils dressèrent leur camp.
41 And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.	41 Lorsque les commerçants de la province apprirent la chose, ils vinrent chargés d’or et d’argent, avec des menottes en quantité, et ils se présentèrent au camp prêts à acheter des prisonniers Israélites. Des gens d’Idumée et du pays des Philistins vinrent aussi les rejoindre.
42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;	42 Lorsque Judas et ses frères virent les armées camper sur leur territoire, ils comprirent que les choses allaient très mal. Ils apprirent aussi la consigne que le roi avait donnée: de livrer leur peuple à une destruction totale.
43 They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.	43 Ils se dirent alors les uns aux autres: “Sauvons notre peuple de la ruine et luttons pour notre peuple et notre Lieu Saint.”
44 Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.	44 On convoqua l’assemblée: on se préparait à la guerre, on priait et on implorait pitié et miséricorde.
45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.	45 Jérusalem, dépeuplée, devenait un désert. Nul de ses enfants n’y entrait, personne n’en sortait, le sanctuaire était foulé aux pieds, des étrangers habitaient la citadelle, elle était devenue une auberge de païens. En Jacob, les danses avaient cessé, on n’entendait plus le son de la flûte et de la lyre.
46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.	46 Tous se rassemblèrent à Masfa, en face de Jérusalem, car Masfa avait été autrefois un lieu de prière pour Israël.
47 Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,	47 Ce jour-là on jeûna, on s’habilla de sacs, on répandit de la cendre sur sa tête et l’on déchira ses vêtements.
48 And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.	48 On déroula le livre de la Loi pour y trouver des réponses, les mêmes que les païens demandaient à leurs idoles.
49 They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.	49 On apporta les vêtements des prêtres, des prémices et des dîmes, on fit venir des Naziréens qui avaient achevé le temps de leur vœu.
50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?	50 Tous crièrent vers le ciel, ils disaient: “Que faire de ces hommes? Où les mener?
51 For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.	51 Ton Lieu Saint a été foulé aux pieds et profané. Tes prêtres sont en deuil, humiliés.
52 And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.	52 Les nations se sont liguées contre nous pour nous faire disparaître. Tu connais bien leurs intentions.
53 How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?	53 Comment pourrons-nous tenir devant elles si tu ne viens pas toi-même à notre secours.”
54 Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.	54 Alors on fit sonner les trompettes et l’on poussa de grands cris.
55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.	55 Après cela, Judas établit des chefs sur le peuple, chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante et chefs de dix.
56 But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.	56 Il dit à ceux qui étaient en train de bâtir une maison, à ceux qui venaient de se fiancer ou de planter une vigne, et à tous ceux qui avaient peur, de s’en retourner chez eux comme l’autorisait la Loi.
57 So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.	57 Puis la troupe se mit en marche et vint camper au sud d’Emmaüs.
58 And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:	58 Judas leur dit: “Équipez-vous et soyez courageux! Tenez-vous prêts à combattre demain ces nations qui se sont rassemblées contre nous pour nous détruire, nous et notre sanctuaire.
59 For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.	59 Mieux vaut pour nous mourir dans la bataille, qu’assister à la ruine de notre peuple et de notre Lieu Saint: arrive ce que le Ciel voudra!”
60 Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
