1 Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;	1 Le roi Antiocus, fils de Démétrius, envoya depuis les îles de la mer une lettre à Simon, grand prêtre et gouverneur des Juifs, ainsi qu’à toute la nation.
2 The contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting:	2 Voici ce qu’on y lisait: “Le roi Antiocus salue Simon, grand prêtre et gouverneur, ainsi que la nation des Juifs.
3 Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war;	3 Des bandits se sont emparés du royaume de nos pères, mais je veux le revendiquer pour le rétablir tel qu’il était autrefois. Pour cela j’ai rassemblé des troupes nombreuses et armé beaucoup de bateaux de guerre.
4 My meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate:	4 J’ai l’intention de débarquer dans le pays pour me venger de ceux qui ont fait la ruine de notre pays et qui ont dévasté un grand nombre de villes de ce royaume.
5 Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted.	5 Je te confirme donc toutes les remises d’impôts que t’ont accordées les rois qui sont venus avant moi et toutes les autres remises qu’ils t’ont accordées.
6 I give thee leave also to coin money for thy country with thine own stamp.	6 Tu peux frapper monnaie à ton nom dans tout le pays,
7 And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee.	7 Jérusalem et le Temple seront libres, toutes les armes que tu as fabriquées, les forteresses que tu as construites et que tu occupes, resteront en ton pouvoir.
8 And if anything be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore.	8 Tout ce qui est dû ou à devoir au trésor royal, te sera remis dès à présent et pour toujours.
9 Furthermore, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will honour thee, and thy nation, and thy temple, with great honour, so that your honour shall be known throughout the world.	9 Lorsque nous serons rentrés en possession de notre royaume, nous te comblerons d’honneurs, toi, ta nation et le Temple, si bien que votre gloire brillera sur toute la terre.”
10 In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers: at which time all the forces came together unto him, so that few were left with Tryphon.	10 Antiocus se mit en route vers le pays de ses pères en l’an 174; toutes les troupes vinrent se ranger autour de lui, si bien qu’il ne resta que peu d’hommes à Tryphon.
11 Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side:	11 Le roi Antiocus se lança à sa poursuite et Tryphon s’enfuit à Dora, au bord de la mer.
12 For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once, and that his forces had forsaken him.	12 Il voyait que le malheur s’abattait sur lui et que son armée l’abandonnait.
13 Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen.	13 Antiocus vint camper devant Dora avec 120 000 hommes et 8 000 cavaliers.
14 And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.	14 Il assiégea la ville pendant que ses bateaux faisaient le blocus du côté de la mer, il l’encercla et par terre et par mer et ne laissa plus personne entrer ni sortir.
15 In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things:	15 De Rome arrivèrent alors Numémius et ses compagnons avec des lettres pour les rois et les pays. Voici ce qu’on y lisait:
16 Lucius, consul of the Romans unto king Ptolemee, greeting:	16 “Lucius, consul de Rome, salue le roi Ptolémée.
17 The Jews' ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews:	17 Le grand prêtre Simon et le peuple juif ont envoyé des ambassadeurs auprès de nous comme amis et alliés, pour renouveler l’ancienne amitié et l’ancienne alliance.
18 And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound.	18 Ils ont apporté un bouclier d’or de plus de 500 kilos,
19 We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them.	19 c’est pourquoi il nous a paru bon d’écrire aux rois et aux pays de ne pas leur faire de tort, de ne pas les attaquer, de respecter leurs villes et leur pays, et de ne pas apporter d’aide à ceux qui voudraient leur faire la guerre.
20 It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them.	20 Il nous a paru bon de recevoir leur bouclier.
21 If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law.	21 En conséquence, si de mauvais sujets s’enfuient de leur pays dans le vôtre, livrez-les au grand prêtre Simon pour qu’il les punisse selon leurs lois.”
22 The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces,	22 On envoya la même lettre au roi Démétrius, à Attale, à Ariarate, à Arsace -
23 And to all the countries and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Aradus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.	23 et à tous les pays: à Sampsamé, aux Spartiates, à Délos, à Myndos, à Sicione, en Carie, à Samos, en Pamphylie, en Lycie, à Halicarnasse, à Rhodes, à Fasélis, à Cos, à Sidé, à Arados, à Gortyne, à Cnide, à Chypre et à Cyrène.
24 And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.	24 On fit une copie de ces lettres pour le grand prêtre Simon.
25 So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in.	25 Le roi Antiocus attaqua le quartier neuf de Dora. Ses hommes avancèrent peu à peu, puis ils construisirent des machines de siège; il assiégea Tryphon si bien que l’on ne pouvait plus ni entrer ni sortir.
26 At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour.	26 Simon lui envoya 2 000 de ses meilleurs guerriers pour l’appuyer, avec de l’argent, de l’or, et beaucoup de matériel.
27 Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him.	27 Mais le roi ne voulut pas les recevoir: bien plus, il annula tous les engagements qu’il avait pris autrefois avec Simon et changea d’attitude envers lui.
28 Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppa and Gazera; with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm.	28 Il lui envoya Athénobius, un de ses Amis, pour discuter avec lui: “Vous occupez Joppé, faisait-il dire, Gazer et la Citadelle de Jérusalem, qui sont des villes de mon royaume.
29 The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom.	29 Vous en avez ravagé les environs, vous avez ruiné le pays et vous vous êtes rendus maîtres de beaucoup de cités dans mes États.
30 Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea:	30 Maintenant donc, rendez-nous les villes que vous avez prises et les impôts des cités que vous avez soumises en dehors du territoire de la Judée.
31 Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you	31 Sinon, donnez 500 talents d’argent à leur place et 500 autres pour les ravages que vous avez commis et pour les impôts que devaient ces cités. Si vous ne le faites pas, nous partirons en guerre contre vous.”
32 So Athenobius the king's friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king's message.	32 Lorsque Athénobius, Ami du roi, arriva à Jérusalem, il vit la richesse de Simon, le buffet couvert de vases d’or et d’argent et le luxe qui l’entourait. Il en fut stupéfait. Quand il rapporta les paroles du roi,
33 Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men's land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time.	33 Simon lui répondit: “Nous n’avons pas conquis une terre étrangère, nous ne nous sommes pas emparés des biens d’autrui, mais c’est l’héritage de nos pères qui avait été volé pour un temps par nos ennemis.
34 Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers.	34 L’occasion étant favorable, nous en avons profité pour reprendre l’héritage de nos pères.
35 And whereas thou demandest Joppa and Gazera, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give thee an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word;	35 Joppé et Gazer que tu réclames, sont deux villes qui ont fait beaucoup de tort à notre peuple et à notre pays; aussi nous ne donnerons pour elles que 100 talents.” Athénobius ne répondit rien,
36 But returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth.	36 mais il repartit furieux vers le roi et lui rapporta la réponse de Simon. Il parla de sa richesse et de tout ce qu’il avait vu, et cela mit le roi dans une grande colère.
37 In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias.	37 Tryphon s’était enfui sur un bateau à Orthosia.
38 Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen,	38 Le roi choisit alors Kendébée comme gouverneur de la zone maritime et lui confia une armée de fantassins et de cavaliers.
39 And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea; also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon.	39 Il lui ordonna d’établir son camp face à la Judée, de reconstruire Kédron, de renforcer ses portes et de combattre le peuple; de son côté le roi allait poursuivre Tryphon.
40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them.	40 Kendébée se rendit à Jamnia et commença d’inciter le peuple à faire des expéditions en Judée, à faire des massacres et à ramener des prisonniers.
41 And when he had built up Cedrou, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.	41 Il fortifia Kédron, il y plaça des cavaliers et des fantassins qui partaient en expédition et patrouillaient sur les routes de Judée comme le roi le lui avait demandé.
