1 David therefore went from thence and fled to the cave of Odollam. And when his brethren, and all his father's house had heard of it, they went down to him thither;	1 David partit de là et se mit en sûreté dans la grotte d’Adoullam. Ses frères et sa famille l’apprirent et descendirent vers lui en ce lieu.
2 And all that were in distress and oppressed with debt, and under affliction of mind gathered themselves unto him: and he became their prince, and there were with him about four hundred men.	2 Tous ceux qui avaient des ennuis se rassemblèrent également autour de lui, tous ceux qui étaient poursuivis par un créancier ou qui étaient mécontents. Il devint leur chef, et avec lui ils étaient environ 400.
3 And David departed from thence into Maspha of Moab: and he said to the king of Moab: Let my father and my mother tarry with you, I beseech thee, till I know what God will do for me.	3 De là David alla à Mispé de Moab. Il dit au roi de Moab: “J’aimerais que mon père et ma mère se retirent chez toi jusqu’à ce que je sache ce que Dieu me réserve.”
4 And he left them under the eyes of the king of Moab, and they abode with him all the days that David was in the hold.	4 Il conduisit ses parents chez le roi de Moab et ils restèrent là jusqu’au jour où David quitta le refuge.
5 And Gad the prophet said to David: Abide not in the hold, depart, and go into the land of Juda. And David departed, and came into the forest of Haret.	5 Le prophète Gad dit un jour à David: “Ne reste pas au refuge, va et rentre au pays de Juda.” David s’en alla et arriva à la forêt de Hérèt.
6 And Saul heard that David was seen, and the men that were with him. Now whilst Saul abode in Gabaa, and was in the wood, which is by Rama, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him,	6 Saül apprit que l’on avait des nouvelles de David et des hommes qui étaient avec lui. Saül siégeait à ce moment à Guibéa sous le tamaris qui est sur la colline: il avait sa lance à la main et tous ses serviteurs étaient debout autour de lui.
7 He said to his servants that stood about him: Hear me now, ye sons of Jemini: will the son of Isai give everyone of you fields, and vineyards, and make you all tribunes, and centurions:	7 Saül dit alors à ses serviteurs réunis autour de lui: “Écoutez donc, hommes de Benjamin! Croyez-vous que le fils de Jessé vous donnera aussi à tous des champs et des vignes, et qu’il fera de vous tous des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent?
8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one to inform me, especially when even my son hath entered into league with the soil of Isai? There is not one of you that pitieth my case, nor that giveth me any information: because my son hath raised up my servant against me, plotting against me to this day.	8 Pourquoi êtes-vous tous d’accord contre moi? Personne ne m’a prévenu que mon fils avait fait une alliance avec le fils de Jessé. Nul d’entre vous ne s’inquiète pour moi, pas un ne m’a révélé que mon fils avait soulevé contre moi mon serviteur et m’en avait fait un adversaire, comme c’est le cas aujourd’hui.”
9 And Doeg the Edomite who stood by, and was the chief among the servants of Saul, answering, said: I saw the son of Isai, in Nobe with Achimelech the son of Achitob the priest.	9 Doëg l’Édomite, qui était l’un des chefs des serviteurs de Saül, prit alors la parole: “J’ai vu le fils de Jessé quand il arrivait à Nob chez Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub.
10 And he consulted the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.	10 Celui-ci a consulté Yahvé pour lui, il lui a donné des provisions et lui a remis l’épée de Goliath le Philistin.”
11 Then the king sent to call for Achimelech the priest the son of Achitob, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nobe, and they came all of them to the king.	11 Alors Saül fit appeler le prêtre Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub, et toute sa famille, les prêtres de Nob; ils arrivèrent tous chez le roi.
12 And Saul said to Achimelech: Hear, thou son of Achitob. He answered: Here I am, my lord.	12 Saül dit: “Écoute-moi donc, fils d’Ahitoub.” Il répondit: “Me voici, mon seigneur.”
13 And Saul said to him: Why have you conspired against me, thou, and the son of Isai, and thou hast given him bread and a sword, and hast consulted the Lord for him, that he should rise up against me, continuing a traitor to this day.	13 Saül lui dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous conspiré contre moi, toi et le fils de Jessé? Tu lui as donné du pain et une épée, tu as consulté Dieu pour lui, pour qu’il se soulève contre moi, et il s’est fait mon adversaire, comme on le voit aujourd’hui.”
14 And Achimelech answering the king, said: And who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son in law, and goeth forth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house?	14 Ahimélek répondit au roi: “Qui était fidèle comme David parmi tous les serviteurs du roi? Il est le gendre du roi, il est affecté à sa garde personnelle, il est honoré dans sa maison.
15 Did I begin to day to consult the Lord for him? far be this from me: let not the king suspect such a thing against his servant, or any one in all my father's house: for thy servant knew nothing of this matter, either little or great.	15 Assurément, ce n’est pas la première fois que j’ai consulté Dieu pour lui. Que le roi ne me reproche rien, pas plus qu’à toute la maison de mon père, ton serviteur ne savait rien de tout cela, absolument rien.”
16 And the king said: Dying thou shalt die, Achimelech, thou and all thy father's house.	16 Mais le roi dit: “Ahimélek, tu vas mourir, toi et toute la maison de ton père avec toi.”
17 And the king said to the messengers that stood about him: Turn, and kill the priests of the Lord, for their hand is with David, because they knew that he was fled, and they told it not to me. And the king's servants would not put forth their hands against the priests of the Lord.	17 Puis le roi dit aux soldats qui étaient autour de lui: “Avancez et mettez à mort les prêtres de Yahvé, car eux aussi soutiennent David. Ils savaient qu’il s’enfuyait loin de moi et ils ne m’ont rien dit.” Mais les serviteurs du roi ne voulurent pas frapper les prêtres de Yahvé.
18 And the king said to Doeg: Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and fell upon the priests and slew in that day eighty-five men that wore the linen ephod.	18 Alors le roi dit à Doëg: “Avance toi, et frappe les prêtres.” Et Doëg l’Édomite s’avança et frappa les prêtres. Ce jour-là il mit à mort 85 hommes qui portaient le pagne de lin.
19 And Nobe the city of the priests he smote with the edge of his sword, both men and women, children, and sucklings, and ox and ass, and sheep with the edge of the sword.	19 Nob, la ville des prêtres, fut passée au fil de l’épée: hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, on passa tout au fil de l’épée, y compris les bœufs, les ânes et les moutons.
20 But one of the sons of Achimelech the son of Achitob, whose name was Abiathar, escaped, and fled to David,	20 Seul échappa un fils d’Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub, il s’appelait Ébyatar. Il courut rejoindre David.
21 And told him that Saul had slain the priests of the Lord.	21 Ébyatar raconta à David comment Saül avait tué les prêtres de Yahvé,
22 And David said to Abiathar: I knew that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that without doubt he would tell Saul: I have been the occasion of the death of all the souls of thy father's house.	22 et David lui dit: “Doëg l’Édomite était présent ce jour-là et je savais bien qu’il préviendrait Saül. C’est moi qui ai causé la mort de toute ta famille.
23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life, seeketh thy life also, and with me thou shalt be saved.	23 Reste donc avec moi et ne crains rien, celui qui s’en prend à ta vie s’en prend à la mienne: à côté de moi tu seras bien gardé.”
