1 And Abimelech the son of Jerobaal went to Sichem to his mother's brethren and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother's father, saying:	1 Abimèlech, figlio di Ierub-Baal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e si incontrò con loro e con tutto il clan della famiglia di sua madre. Chiese loro
2 Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men all the sons of Jerobaal should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal consider that I am your bone, and your flesh.	2 che si rivolgessero ai signori di Sichem dicendo: "Che cosa è meglio per voi, avere settanta capi, quanti sono i figli di Ierub-Baal, oppure avere sopra di voi un solo capo che, come voi ben sapete, ha nelle vene il vostro stesso sangue?".
3 And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother:	3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono così di Abimèlech a tutti i signori di Sichem e il loro cuore fu per Abimèlech, perché pensavano che era della loro stirpe.
4 And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.	4 Gli dettero settanta sicli prelevati dal tempio di Baal-Berit, coi quali Abimèlech assoldò una masnada di avventurieri che si misero al suo seguito.
5 And he came to his father's house in Ephra, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.	5 Egli andò a Ofra, alla casa di suo padre, dove uccise su un masso i suoi settanta fratelli, figli di Gedeone, dei quali scampò solo Iotam, il minore, perché si era nascosto.
6 And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem.	6 Radunatisi allora tutti i signori di Sichem e tutta la casa di Millo, proclamarono re Abimèlech presso la quercia della stele che è a Sichem.
7 This being told to Joatham, he went and stood on the top of mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, ye men of Sichem, so may God hear you.	7 Quando Iotam fu informato della cosa, andò sulle cime del monte Garizim, da dove a gran voce gridò ai signori di Sichem: "Ascoltatemi, signori di Sichem, e che Dio ascolti voi.
8 The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign thou over us.	8 Un giorno gli alberi si misero in cammino, per andare a eleggere un re che regnasse sopra di loro. Dissero all'ulivo: "Regna sopra di noi!".
9 And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees?	9 Rispose loro l'ulivo: "Dovrò forse rinunciare al mio olio, col quale si rende onore agli uomini e agli dèi, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
10 And the trees said to the fig tree: Come thou and reign over us.	10 Allora gli alberi dissero al fico: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
11 And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees?	11 Rispose loro il fico: "Dovrò forse rinunciare alla mia dolcezza, ai miei ottimi frutti, per andarmi ad agitare al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
12 And the trees said to the vine: Come thou and reign over us.	12 Allora gli alberi dissero alla vite: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
13 And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheereth God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?	13 Rispose loro la vite: "Dovrò forse rinunciare al mio mosto, che dà gioia agli dèi e agli uomini, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
14 And all the trees said to the bramble: Come thou and reign over us.	14 Allora gli alberi, tutti insieme dissero al rovo: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
15 And it answered them: If indeed you mean to make me king, come ye and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.	15 Rispose il rovo agli alberi: "Se avete davvero l'intenzione di eleggere me vostro sovrano, venite a ripararvi alla mia ombra. Altrimenti, un fuoco uscirà dal rovo, e divorerà i cedri del Libano!".
16 Now therefore if you have done well, and without sin in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him, who fought for you,	16 "E ora, nell'eleggere re Abimèlech, è chiaro che non avete agito con lealtà e rettitudine; è chiaro che non avete agito bene nei riguardi di Ierub-Baal e della sua famiglia; è chiaro che non avete agito nei suoi riguardi come meritavano le sue imprese.
17 And exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hands of Madian,	17 Mio padre per voi ha combattuto, ha messo a repentaglio la sua vita, vi ha liberato dalle mani di Madian.
18 And you are now risen up against my father's house, and have killed his sons seventy men upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his handmaid king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother:	18 E voi oggi avete osato sollevarvi contro la casa di mio padre, uccidendo i suoi figli -- erano settanta! -- su di un masso; e poi avete fatto re dei signori di Sichem Abimèlech, figlio di una serva di mio padre, per il solo motivo che è della vostra gente.
19 If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault with Jerobaal, and his house, rejoice ye this day in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you.	19 Se, dunque, oggi avete agito con lealtà e rettitudine nei confronti di Ierub-Baal e della sua famiglia, Abimèlech sia la vostra gioia e voi la sua.
20 But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem, and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech.	20 Ma se la cosa stesse diversamente, che un fuoco esca da Abimèlech e divori i signori di Sichem e la gente di Millo; e un fuoco esca dai signori di Sichem e dalla gente di Millo e divori Abimèlech".
21 And when he had said thus he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.	21 Poi Iotam fuggì e si mise in salvo a Beer, dove si stabilì per paura di suo fratello Abimèlech.
22 So Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.	22 Abimèlech tenne il potere su Israele per tre anni.
23 And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem: who began to detest him,	23 Poi il Signore mandò uno spirito malvagio fra Abimèlech e i signori di Sichem, i quali si ribellarono contro di lui,
24 And to leave the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood upon Abimelech their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him.	24 facendo ricadere la violenza perpetrata contro i settanta figli di Ierub-Baal e il loro sangue su Abimèlech, che era loro fratello e li aveva uccisi, e sui signori di Sichem che lo avevano incoraggiato a uccidere i suoi fratelli.
25 And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech.	25 Allora i signori di Sichem, in segno di sfida ad Abimèlech, tendevano insidie sulla cima dei monti per depredare tutti i viandanti che capitavano nelle loro mani. La cosa fu riferita ad Abimèlech.
26 And Gaal the son of Obed came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem taking courage at his coming,	26 Intanto giungeva a Sichem, insieme ai suoi fratelli, un certo Gaal, figlio di Obed, il quale riuscì a guadagnarsi la fiducia dei signori di Sichem.
27 Went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech.	27 Un giorno i Sichemiti uscirono dalla città per vendemmiare e preparare il mosto; poi fecero una gran festa nel tempio del loro dio, mangiando e bevendo: in questa occasione maledissero Abimèlech.
28 And Gaal the son of Obed cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and hath made Zebul his servant ruler over the men of Emor the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him?	28 Gaal, figlio di Obed, tenne ai Sichemiti questo discorso: "Chi è Abimèlech e chi sono i Sichemiti, perché gli dobbiamo stare sottomessi? Egli è figlio di Ierub-Baal e Zebul governa la città per lui. E pensare che in passato furono loro sottomessi alla gente di Camor, il capostipite dei Sichemiti!
29 Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.	29 Perché dunque restargli sottomessi? Ma se questo popolo si porrà ai miei ordini, io caccerò Abimèlech. Gli dirò: "E' grande il tuo esercito; esci a battaglia!".
30 For Zebul the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry,	30 Quando Zebul, il governatore della città, seppe del discorso di Gaal, figlio di Obed, si sdegnò
31 And sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold Gaal the son of Obed is come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavoureth to set the city against thee.	31 e mandò messi ad Abimèlech, ad Aruma, con questo messaggio: "Gaal, figlio di Obed, e i suoi fratelli sono arrivati a Sichem e sono di fatto padroni della città per staccarla da te.
32 Arise therefore in the night with the people that is with thee and he hid in the field:	32 Muoviti di notte tu e la gente che hai con te e va' a metterti all'agguato fuori della città.
33 And betimes in the morning at sun rising set upon the city. And when he shall come out against thee with his people, do to him what thou shalt be able.	33 Domattina, quando si leverà il sole, muoviti presto e attacca la città all'improvviso: allora costui ti uscirà incontro coi suoi uomini e tu farai di lui secondo quello che ti riuscirà".
34 Abimelech therefore arose with all his army by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places.	34 Abimèlech si mosse di notte con tutta la gente che aveva e, divisi i suoi uomini in quattro gruppi, andò ad appostarsi nelle immediate vicinanze di Sichem.
35 And Gaal the son of Obed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him from the places of the ambushes.	35 Gaal, figlio di Obed, uscì dalla città e schierò i suoi uomini davanti alla porta. Allora Abimèlech e i suoi uomini uscirono fuori dal luogo dove erano appostati.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold a multitude cometh down from the mountains. And he answered him: Thou seest the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is thy mistake.	36 Quando Gaal li scorse, disse a Zebul: "Vedo gente che scende dall'alto dei colli". Ma Zebul gli rispose: "E' l'ombra dei colli che scambi per uomini!".
37 Again Gaal said: Behold there cometh people down from the middle of the land, and one troop cometh by the way that looketh towards the oak.	37 Gaal insisteva: "Vedo uomini che calano dall'"Ombelico della terra", e un'altra colonna arriva dalla strada della "Quercia degli indovini".
38 And Zebul said to him: Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst? Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people which thou didst despise? Go out, and fight against him.	38 "Dov'è mai andato a finire, esclamò allora Zebul, quello che andavi dicendo: "Chi è Abimèlech che gli si debba servire!?". E' questa la gente che disprezzavi. Avanti, dunque, combatti contro di essa".
39 So Gaal went out in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech,	39 Gaal, alla testa dei signori di Sichem, dette battaglia ad Abimèlech;
40 Who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city:	40 ma fu messo in fuga. Molti caddero morti prima di raggiungere la porta della città.
41 And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it.	41 Poi Abimèlech tornò ad Aruma, mentre Zebul inseguiva Gaal e i suoi fratelli per impedir loro di restare a Sichem.
42 So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told Abimelech.	42 Nonostante ciò, il giorno dopo i Sichemiti uscirono di nuovo dalla città e la decisione fu riferita ad Abimèlech.
43 And he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose and set upon them,	43 Egli prese i suoi uomini e, divisili in tre gruppi, andò ad appostarsi fuori della città. E così, quando egli vide i Sichemiti che uscivano dalla città, li assalì e li travolse.
44 With his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field.	44 Allora Abimèlech col suo gruppo si precipitò avanti e andò a schierarsi davanti alla porta della città, mentre gli altri due gruppi assalivano i Sichemiti che si trovavano in aperta campagna e li massacravano.
45 And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.	45 Abimèlech continuò l'assalto alla città per tutta la giornata, finché non riuscì ad espugnarla. Ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse, spargendovi sopra il sale.
46 And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong.	46 Quando i signori della rocca di Sichem si resero conto delle intenzioni di Abimèlech, si rifugiarono nella cripta del tempio di El-Berit.
47 Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together,	47 Abimèlech, appena seppe che i signori della rocca di Sichem si erano raccolti tutti insieme,
48 Went up into mount Selmon he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do you out of hand.	48 salì sul monte Salmon insieme agli uomini che aveva con sé; qui, impugnata la scure, Abimèlech tagliò il ramo di un albero e, caricatoselo sulle spalle, ordinò ai suoi uomini di fare rapidamente quanto avevano visto fare a lui.
49 So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort they set it on fire: and so it came to pass that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the tower of Sichem.	49 Allora anche tutti i suoi uomini tagliarono ciascuno un ramo; poi, seguendo Abimèlech, andarono a deporre i rami sopra la cripta e la incendiarono, lasciandovi bruciare tutti quelli che vi erano dentro: tutti gli abitanti della rocca morirono in numero di circa mille, fra uomini e donne.
50 Then Abimelech departing from thence came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.	50 Poi Abimèlech andò ad assediare Tebes e la espugnò.
51 And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves.	51 V'era in mezzo alla città una rocca possente, dove si erano rifugiati tutti, uomini e donne, con i signori della città. Barricatisi dentro, erano saliti sugli spalti.
52 And Abimelech coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it:	52 Abimèlech, appena giunto ai piedi della rocca, ne cominciò l'assalto, riuscendo a spingersi fino alla porta che voleva incendiare.
53 And behold a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.	53 Ma una donna gli gettò sulla testa una macina da mulino, fracassandogli il cranio.
54 And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him.	54 Subito Abimèlech, chiamato il suo scudiero, gli ordinò di sguainare la spada e di finirlo, perché non si dicesse che era morto per mano di una donna. Morì trafitto dallo scudiero.
55 And when he was dead, all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes.	55 Quando gli uomini di Israele videro che Abimèlech era morto, se ne tornarono ciascuno al suo paese.
56 And God repaid the evil, that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren.	56 Dio fece così ricadere su Abimèlech il male che aveva commesso contro suo padre, quando uccise i suoi settanta fratelli,
57 The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.	57 e ugualmente fece ricadere sui Sichemiti tutto il male da loro compiuto: era caduta sopra di loro la maledizione di Iotam, figlio di Ierub-Baal.
