Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord:2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.
As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue.3 By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.
By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world.4 Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.
And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge;5 With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,
And in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness;6 understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,
And in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity.7 devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.
For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.8 The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.
For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.9 But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.
Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time.10 Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,
For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.11 for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.
For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth.12 That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.
But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.13 I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,
Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me.14 since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.
And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things.15 And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.
For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness.16 When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.
For he received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.17 He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.
And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.
And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.
Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.20 At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.
For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.
