1 And this lot fell to the tribe of Manasses (for he is the firstborn of Joseph) to Machir the firstborn of Manasses the father of Galaad, who was a warlike man, and had for possession Galaad and Basan.	1 Makir était le premier-né de Manassé, qui lui-même était le premier-né de Joseph. C’était un homme de guerre et il reçut en héritage le Galaad et le Bashan.
2 And to the rest of the children of Manasses according to their families: to the children of Abiezer, and to the children of Helec, and to the children of Esriel, and to the children of Sechem, and to the children of Hepher, and to the children of Semida: these are the male children of Manasses the son of Joseph, by their kindreds.	2 Voici à présent ce qui concerne les autres fils de Manassé et leurs clans: les fils d’Abiézer, les fils de Hélek, les fils d’Asriel, les fils de Chékem, les fils de Héfer et les fils de Chémida (c’étaient les enfants mâles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs clans).
3 But Salphaad the son of Hepher the son of Galaad the son of Machir the son of Manasses had no sons, but only daughters: whose names are these, Maala and Noa and Hegla and Melcha and Thersa.	3 Séloféhad, fils de Héfer, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, n’avait pas de fils, mais seulement des filles. Elles s’appelaient: Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka et Tirsa.
4 And they came in the presence of Eleazar the priest and of Josue the son of Nun, and of the princes, saying: The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, that a possession should be given us in the midst of our brethren. And he gave them according to the commandment of the Lord a possession amongst the brethren of their father.	4 Elles vinrent donc trouver le prêtre Éléazar et Josué, fils de Noun, ainsi que tous les chefs. Elles leur dirent: “Yahvé a ordonné à Moïse de nous donner un héritage au milieu de nos frères.” On leur donna donc un héritage au milieu des frères de leur père, selon l’ordre de Yahvé.
5 And there fell ten portions to Manasses, beside the land of Galaad and Basan beyond the Jordan.	5 Manassé reçut donc 10 parts en plus du pays de Galaad et du Bashan de l’autre côté du Jourdain,
6 For the daughters of Manasses possessed inheritance in the midst of his sons. And the land of Galaad fell to the lot of the rest of the children of Manasses.	6 puisque les filles de Manassé reçurent un héritage au milieu de ses fils. Le Galaad appartenait aux autres fils de Manassé.
7 And the border of Manasses was from Aser, Machmethath which looketh towards Sichem: and it goeth out on the right hand by the inhabitants of the fountain of Taphua.	7 Du côté d’Asher, le Mikmétat qui fait face à Sichem formait la frontière. Celle-ci descendait au sud vers Yachib qui est la source de Tapoua.
8 For the lot of Manasses took in the land of Taphua, which is on the borders of Manasses, and belongs to the children of Ephraim.	8 Manassé possédait en effet la région de Tapoua, mais Tapoua sur la frontière de Manassé appartenait à Éphraïm.
9 And the border goeth down to the valley of the reeds, to the south of the torrent of the cities of Ephraim, which are in the midst of the cities of Manasses: the border of Manasses is on the north side of the torrent, and the outgoings of it are at the sea:	9 La frontière se prolongeait par le torrent de Kana; au sud du torrent se trouvaient les villes d’Éphraïm, outre celles que possédait Éphraïm au milieu des villes de Manassé. La frontière de Manassé passait au nord du torrent et s’achevait à la mer.
10 So that the possession of Ephraim is on the south, and on the north that of Manasses, and the sea is the border of both, and they are joined together in the tribe of Aser on the north, and in the tribe of Issachar on the east.	10 Le sud appartenait à Éphraïm et le nord à Manassé, et la mer en faisait la limite. Il touchait Asher au nord et Issacar à l’est.
11 And the inheritance of Manasses in Issachar and in Aser, was Bethsan and its villages, and Jeblaam with its villages, and the inhabitants of Dor, with the towns thereof: the inhabitants also of Endor with the villages thereof: and in like manner the inhabitants of Thenac with the villages thereof: and the inhabitants of Mageddo with their villages, and the third part of the city of Nopheth.	11 Dans le territoire d’Issacar et dans celui d’Asher, Manassé possédait Beth-Chéan et les villes qui en dépendent, Yibléam et les villes qui en dépendent, les habitants de Dor et des villes qui en dépendent, les habitants de Tanak et de Méguiddo et les villes qui en dépendent (ces trois dernières villes sont situées sur des hauteurs).
12 Neither could the children of Manasses overthrow these cities, but the Chanaanite began to dwell in his land.	12 Comme les fils de Manassé ne purent s’emparer de ces villes, les Cananéens demeurèrent dans le pays.
13 But after that the children of Israel were grown strong, they subdued the Chanaanites, and made them their tributaries, and they did not kill them.	13 Cependant, lorsqu’ils furent devenus plus forts, les Israélites soumirent les Cananéens à la corvée, mais ils ne les chassèrent pas.
14 And the children of Joseph spoke to Josue, and said: Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to possess, whereas I am of so great a multitude, and the Lord hath blessed me?	14 Les fils de Joseph dirent à Josué: “Pourquoi nous as-tu donné pour héritage un seul lot et une seule part, alors que nous formons un peuple nombreux, tellement Yahvé nous a bénis jusqu’à ce jour.”
15 And Josue said to them: If thou be a great people, go up into the woodland, and cut down room for thyself in the land of the Pherezite and the Raphaims: because the possession of mount Ephraim is too narrow for thee.	15 Josué leur répondit: “Si vous êtes un peuple nombreux, montez vers la forêt des Périsites et des Réphaïm. Défrichez-la pour votre compte, si la montagne d’Éphraïm est trop petite pour vous.”
16 And the children of Joseph answered him: We cannot go up to the mountains, for the Chanaanites that dwell in the low lands, wherein are situate Bethsan with its towns, and Jezrael in the midst of the valley, have chariots of iron	16 Les fils de Joseph lui dirent: “La montagne ne nous suffit pas, mais les Cananéens qui habitent la plaine ont tous des chars de fer, aussi bien ceux qui habitent à Beth-Chéan et dans ses villages, que ceux qui habitent dans la plaine d’Yizréel.”
17 And Josue said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasses: Thou art a great people, and of great strength, thou shalt not have one lot only:	17 Alors Josué répondit à la maison de Joseph, à Éphraïm et à Manassé: “Vous êtes un peuple nombreux et vous êtes très forts. Il n’y aura pour vous qu’une seule part.
18 But thou shalt pass to the mountain, and shalt cut down the wood, and make thyself room to dwell in: and mayst proceed farther, when thou hast destroyed the Chanaanites, who as thou sayest have iron chariots, and are very strong.	18 La montagne vous appartient: vous la déboiserez, puisque c’est une forêt, et elle sera à vous dans toute son étendue. Le Cananéen a beau être fort et avoir des chars de fer, vous la lui prendrez. ”
