And when we had escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita. But the barbarians shewed us no small courtesy.1 Una vez a salvo, supimos que la isla se llamaba Malta.
For kindling a fire, they refreshed us all, because of the present rain, and of the cold.2 Los nativos nos mostraron una humanidad poco común; encendieron una hoguera a causa de la lluvía que caía y del frío, y nos acogieron a todos.
And when Paul had gathered together a bundle of sticks, and had laid them on the fire, a viper coming out of the heat, fastened on his hand.3 Pablo había reunido una brazada de ramas secas; al ponerla sobre la hoguera, una víbora que salía huyendo del calor, hizo presa en su mano.
And when the barbarians saw the beast hanging on his hand, they said one to another: Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, who though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance doth not suffer him to live.4 Los nativos, cuando vieron el animal colgado de su mano, se dijeron unos a otros: «Este hombre es seguramente un asesino; ha escapado del mar, pero la justicia divina no le deja vivir».
And he indeed shaking off the beast into the fire, suffered no harm.5 Pero él sacudió el animal sobre el fuego y no sufrió daño alguno.
But they supposed that he would begin to swell up, and that he would suddenly fall down and die. But expecting long, and seeing that there came no harm to him, changing their minds, they said, that he was a god.6 Ellos estaban esperando que se hincharía o que caería muerto de repente; pero después de esperar largo tiempo y viendo que no le ocurría nada anormal, cambiaron de parecer y empezaron a decir que era un dios.
Now in these places were possessions of the chief man of the island, named Publius, who receiving us, for three days entertained us courteously.7 En las cercanías de aquel lugar tenía unas propiedades el principal de la isla llamado Publio, quien nos recibió y nos dio amablemente hospedaje durante tres días.
And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever, and of a bloody flux. To whom Paul entered in; and when he had prayed, and laid his hands on him, he healed him.8 Precisamente el padre de Publio se hallaba en cama atacado de fiebres y disentería. Pablo entró a verle, hizo oración, le impuso las manos y le curó.
Which being done, all that had diseases in the island, came and were healed:9 Después de este suceso los otros enfermos de la isla acudieron y fueron curados.
Who also honoured us with many honours, and when we were to set sail, they laded us with such things as were necessary.10 Tuvieron para con nosotros toda suerte de consideraciones y a nuestra partida nos proveyeron de lo necesario.
And after three months, we sailed in a ship of Alexandria, that had wintered in the island, whose sign was the Castors.11 Transcurridos tres meses nos hicimos a la mar en una nave alejandrina que había invernado en la isla y llevaba por enseña los Dióscuros.
And when we were come to Syracusa, we tarried there three days.12 Arribamos a Siracusa y permanecimos allí tres días.
From thence, compassing by the shore, we came to Rhegium: and after one day, the south wind blowing, we came the second day to Puteoli;13 Desde allí, costeando, llegamos a Regio. Al día siguiente se levantó el viento del sur, y al cabo de dos días llegamos a Pozzuoli.
Where, finding brethren, we were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went to Rome.14 Encontramos allí hermanos y tuvimos el consuelo de permanecer con ellos siete días. Y así llegamos a Roma.
And from thence, when the brethren had heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum, and the Three Taverns: whom when Paul saw, he gave thanks to God, and took courage.15 Los hermanos, informados de nuestra llegada, salieron a nuestro encuentro hasta el Foro Apio y Tres Tabernas. Pablo, al verlos, dio gracias a Dios y cobró ánimos.
And when we were come to Rome, Paul was suffered to dwell by himself, with a soldier that kept him.16 Cuando entramos en Roma se le permitió a Pablo permanecer en casa particular con un soldado que le custodiara.
And after the third day, he called together the chief of the Jews. And when they were assembled, he said to them: Men, brethren, I, having done nothing against the people, or the custom of our fathers, was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans;17 Tres días después convocó a los principales judíos. Una vez reunidos, les dijo: «Hermanos, yo, sin haber hecho nada contra el pueblo ni contra las costumbres de los padres, fui apresado en Jerusalén y entregado en manos de los romanos,
Who, when they had examined me, would have released me, for that there was no cause of death in me;18 que, después de haberme interrogado, querían dejarme en libertad porque no había en mí ningún motivo de muerte.
But the Jews contradicting it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had any thing to accuse my nation of.19 Pero como los judíos se oponían, me vi forzado a apelar al César, sin pretender con eso acusar a los de mi nación.
For this cause therefore I desired to see you, and to speak to you. Because that for the hope of Israel, I am bound with this chain.20 Por este motivo os llamé para veros y hablaros, pues precisamente por la esperanza de Israel llevo yo estas cadenas».
But they said to him: We neither received letters concerning thee from Judea, neither did any of the brethren that came hither, relate or speak any evil of thee.21 Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros no hemos recibido de Judea ninguna carta que nos hable de ti, ni ninguno de los hermanos llegados aquí nos ha referido o hablado nada malo de ti.
But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that it is every where contradicted.22 Pero deseamos oír de ti mismo lo que piensas, pues lo que de esa secta sabemos es que en todas partes se la contradice».
And when they had appointed him a day, there came very many to him unto his lodgings; to whom he expounded, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, out of the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.23 Le señalaron un día y vinieron en mayor número adonde se hospedaba. El les iba exponiendo el Reino de Dios, dando testimonio e intentando persuadirles acerca de Jesús, basándose en la Ley de Moisés y en los Profetas, desde la mañana hasta la tarde.
And some believed the things that were said; but some believed not.24 Unos creían por sus palabras y otros en cambio permanecían incrédulos.
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, Paul speaking this one word: Well did the Holy Ghost speak to our fathers by Isaias the prophet,25 Cuando, en desacuerdo entre sí mismos, ya se marchaban, Pablo dijo esta sola cosa: «Con razón habló el Espíritu Santo a vuestros padres por medio del profeta Isaías:
Saying: Go to this people, and say to them: With the ear you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive.26 Ve a encontrar a este pueblo y dile: Escucharéis bien, pero no entenderéis, miraréis bien, pero no veréis.
For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears have they heard heavily, and their eyes they have shut; lest perhaps they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.27 Porque se ha embotado el corazón de este pueblo, han hecho duros sus oídos, y sus ojos han cerrado; no sea que vean con sus ojos, y con sus oídos oigan, y con su corazón entiendan y se conviertan, y yo los cure.
Be it known therefore to you, that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it.28 «Sabed, pues, que esta salvación de Dios ha sido enviada a los gentiles; ellos sí que la oirán».
And when he had said these things, the Jews went out from him, having much reasoning among themselves.
And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging; and he received all that came in to him,30 Pablo permaneció dos años enteros en una casa que había alquilado y recibía a todos los que acudían a él;
Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, without prohibition.31 predicaba el Reino de Dios y enseñaba lo referente al Señor Jesucristo con toda valentía, sin estorbo alguno.
