DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them.2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.
And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle
And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,
Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'
And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.
When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'
And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.
But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.
Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'
Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'
Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.
The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true.13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'
Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go.14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,
And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;
And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true.17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.
They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .
These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.
Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.
The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come?22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '
And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.
They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.
Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.
And they understood not, that he called God his Father.27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.
Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;
And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.
When he spoke these things, many believed in him.30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.
Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.
They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free?33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '
Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin.34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.
Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever.35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.
If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.
I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.
They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham.39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.
But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.
You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'
Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me:42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.
Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.
But if I say the truth, you believe me not.45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.
Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.
The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:
Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me.49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.
But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.
Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.
The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'
Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'
And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.
The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'
Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.
They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.
