Deuteronomy 25

1 If there be a controversy between men, and they call upon the judges: they shall give the prize of justice to him whom they perceive to be just: and him whom they find to be wicked, they shall condemn of wickedness.	1 Prends le cas de deux hommes qui se sont querellés. Ils sont venus devant le tribunal et on les a jugés: l’innocent a été libéré et le coupable, condamné.
2 And if they see that the offender be worthy of stripes: they shall lay him down, and shall cause him to be beaten before them. According to the measure of the sin shall the measure also of the stripes be:	2 Si le coupable a mérité d’être battu, le juge le fera étendre à terre et l’homme recevra en sa présence le nombre de coups que mérite sa faute.
3 Yet so, that they exceed not the number of forty: lest thy brother depart shamefully torn before thy eyes.	3 On ne lui donnera pas plus de 40 coups car, avec davantage de coups, ton frère serait trop malmené et il resterait déshonoré à tes yeux.
4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out thy corn on the floor.	4 Tu ne muselleras pas le bœuf qui bat le grain.
5 When brethren dwell together, and one of them dieth without children, the wife of the deceased shall not marry to another: but his brother shall take her, and raise up seed for his brother:	5 Lorsque des frères habitent ensemble et que l’un d’eux meurt sans avoir de fils, la femme du mort ne peut être reprise par un étranger. Son beau-frère s’approchera d’elle et la prendra pour femme. Il remplira envers elle son devoir de beau-frère,
6 And the first son he shall have of her he shall call by his name, that his name be not abolished out of Israel.	6 et le premier enfant qu’elle mettra au monde sera regardé comme le fils de celui qui est mort; ainsi son nom ne disparaîtra pas en Israël.
7 But if he will not take his brother's wife, who by law belongeth to him, the woman shall go to the gate of the city, and call upon the ancients, and say: My husband's brother refuseth to raise up his brother's name in Israel: and will not take me to wife.	7 Mais si cet homme refuse de prendre sa belle-sœur, elle ira trouver les anciens à la porte de la ville et elle leur dira: “Mon beau-frère refuse de maintenir vivant en Israël le nom de son frère. Il ne veut pas remplir envers moi son devoir de beau-frère.”
8 And they shall cause him to be sent for forthwith, and shall ask him. If he answer: I will not take her to wife:	8 Alors les anciens le convoqueront et lui parleront. Et s’il s’entête à dire: “Je ne veux pas la prendre pour femme!”
9 The woman shall come to him before the ancients, and shall take off his shoe from his foot, and spit in his face, and say: So shall it be done to the man that will not build up his brother's house:	9 sa belle-sœur s’avancera vers lui en présence des anciens, elle lui enlèvera du pied sa sandale et lui crachera au visage. Elle dira: “Voilà ce qu’on fait à celui qui n’assure pas une descendance à son frère.”
10 And his name shall be called in Israel, the house of the unshod.	10 Dès lors, en Israël, on appellera sa maison: la maison du déchaussé.
11 If two men have words together, and one begin to fight against the other, and the other's wife willing to deliver her husband out of the hand of the stronger, shall put forth her hand, and take him by the secrets,	11 Un autre cas: des hommes se battent et la femme de l’un d’eux saisit par les parties honteuses celui qui frappe son mari, car elle veut le délivrer.
12 Thou shalt cut off her hand, neither shalt thou be moved with any pity in her regard.	12 Même dans ce cas tu lui trancheras la main: tu seras sans pitié pour elle.
13 Thou shalt not have divers weights in thy bag, a greater and a less:	13 Tu n’auras pas dans ton sac deux poids, un lourd et un léger.
14 Neither shall there be in thy house a greater bushel and a less.	14 Tu n’auras pas dans ta maison deux mesures, une grande et une petite.
15 Thou shalt have a just and a true weight, and thy bushel shall be equal and true: that thou mayest live a long time upon the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee.	15 Mais tes poids seront justes, tes mesures seront justes; ainsi tu vivras de longs jours sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.
16 For the Lord thy God abhorreth him that doth these things, and he hateth all injustice.	16 Celui qui fait autrement est un malhonnête, il déplaît à Yahvé ton Dieu.
17 Remember what Amalec did to thee in the way when thou camest out of Egypt:	17 Souviens-toi de ce que t’a fait Amalec sur la route, lorsque tu sortais d’Égypte.
18 How he met thee: and slew the hindmost of the army, who sat down, being weary, when thou wast spent with hunger and labour, and he feared not God.	18 Il est venu à ta rencontre et a attaqué à l’arrière tous ceux des tiens qui étaient épuisés, car vous étiez tous fatigués et découragés. Il n’a eu aucune crainte de Dieu.
19 Therefore when the Lord thy God shall give thee rest, and shall have subdued all the nations round about in the land which he hath promised thee: thou shalt blot out his name from under heaven. See thou forget it not.	19 C’est pourquoi, lorsque Yahvé ton Dieu t’aura donné du repos et t’aura délivré de tes ennemis, lorsque tu seras dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne en héritage pour le posséder, tu effaceras la mémoire d’Amalec de dessous les cieux. Ne l’oublie pas!
