DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And it came to pass on the second first sabbath, that as he went through the corn fields, his disciples plucked the ears, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.1 While he was going through a field of grain on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
And some of the Pharisees said to them: Why do you that which is not lawful on the sabbath days?2 Some Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?"
And Jesus answering them, said: Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry, and they that were with him:3 Jesus said to them in reply, "Have you not read what David did when he and those (who were) with him were hungry?
How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the bread of proposition, and gave to them that were with him, which is not lawful to eat but only for the priests?4 (How) he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions."
And he said to them: The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.5 Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And there was a man, whose right hand was withered.6 On another sabbath he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
And the scribes and Pharisees watched if he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find an accusation against him.7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.
But he knew their thoughts; and said to the man who had the withered hand: Arise, and stand forth in the midst. And rising he stood forth.8 But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, "Come up and stand before us." And he rose and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them: I ask you, if it be lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy?9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?"
And looking round about on them all, he said to the man: Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth: and his hand was restored.10 Looking around at them all, he then said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He did so and his hand was restored.
And they were filled with madness; and they talked one with another, what they might do to Jesus.11 But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and he passed the whole night in the prayer of God.12 In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.
And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples; and he chose twelve of them (whom also he named apostles):13 When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named apostles:
Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,15 Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot,
And Jude, the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
And coming down with them, he stood in a plain place, and the company of his disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon,17 And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon
Who were come to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits, were cured.18 came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured.
And all the multitude sought to touch him, for virtue went out from him, and healed all.19 Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all.
And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said: Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.20 And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for you shall laugh.21 Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
Be glad in that day and rejoice; for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For according to these things did their fathers to the prophets.23 Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
But woe to you that are rich: for you have your consolation.24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Woe to you that are filled: for you shall hunger. Woe to you that now laugh: for you shall mourn and weep.25 But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when men shall bless you: for according to these things did their fathers to the false prophets.26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.
But I say to you that hear: Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you.27 "But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
Bless them that curse you, and pray for them that calumniate you.28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
And to him that striketh thee on the one cheek, offer also the other. And him that taketh away from thee thy cloak, forbid not to take thy coat also.29 To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to every one that asketh thee, and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again.30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them in like manner.31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
And if you love them that love you, what thanks are to you? for sinners also love those that love them.32 For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks are to you? for sinners also do this.33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks are to you? for sinners also lend to sinners, for to receive as much.34 If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is) that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
But love ye your enemies: do good, and lend, hoping for nothing thereby: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest; for he is kind to the unthankful, and to the evil.35 But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.36 Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.
Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.37 "Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give, and it shall be given to you: good measure and pressed down and shaken together and running over shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you shall mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.38 Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you."
And he spoke also to them a similitude: Can the blind lead the blind? do they not both fall into the ditch?39 And he told them a parable, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?
The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect, if he be as his master.40 No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.
And why seest thou the mote in thy brother's eye: but the beam that is in thy own eye thou considerest not?41 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
Or how canst thou say to thy brother: Brother, let me pull the mote out of thy eye, when thou thyself seest not the beam in thy own eye? Hypocrite, cast first the beam out of thy own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to take out the mote from thy brother's eye.42 How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,' when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye.
For there is no good tree that bringeth forth evil fruit; nor an evil tree that bringeth forth good fruit.43 "A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by its fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns; nor from a bramble bush do they gather the grape.44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.45 A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
And why call you me, Lord, Lord; and do not the things which I say?46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?
Every one that cometh to me, and heareth my words, and doth them, I will shew you to whom he is like.47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them.
He is like to a man building a house, who digged deep, and laid the foundation upon a rock. And when a flood came, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and it could not shake it; for it was founded on a rock.48 That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built.
But he that heareth, and doth not, is like to a man building his house upon the earth without a foundation: against which the stream beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.49 But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."
