DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And entering in, he walked through Jericho.1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town
And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans, and he was rich.2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.
And he sought to see Jesus who he was, and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature.3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;
And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore tree, that he might see him; for he was to pass that way.4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.
And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him, and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down; for this day I must abide in thy house.5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'
And he made haste and came down; and received him with joy.6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.
And when all saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner.7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.
But Zacheus standing, said to the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wronged any man of any thing, I restore him fourfold.8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'
Jesus said to him: This day is salvation come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'
As they were hearing these things, he added and spoke a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately be manifested.11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.
He said therefore: A certain nobleman went into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.
And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them: Trade till I come.13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."
But his citizens hated him: and they sent an embassage after him, saying: We will not have this man to reign over us.14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."
And it came to pass, that he returned, having received the kingdom: and he commanded his servants to be called, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.
And the first came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."
And he said to him: Well done, thou good servant, because thou hast been faithful in a little, thou shalt have power over ten cities.17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."
And the second came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."
And he said to him: Be thou also over five cities.19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."
And another came, saying: Lord, behold here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin;20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth
For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and thou reapest that which thou didst not sow.21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."
He saith to him: Out of thy own mouth I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping that which I did not sow:22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?
And why then didst thou not give my money into the bank, that at my coming, I might have exacted it with usury?23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."
And he said to them that stood by: Take the pound away from him, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."
And they said to him: Lord, he hath ten pounds.25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."
But I say to you, that to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound: and from him that hath not, even that which he hath, shall be taken from him.26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.
But as for those my enemies, who would not have me reign over them, bring them hither, and kill them before me.27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '
And having said these things, he went before, going up to Jerusalem.28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethania, unto the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples,29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,
Saying: Go into the town which is over against you, at your entering into which you shall find the colt of an ass tied, on which no man ever hath sitten: loose him, and bring him hither.30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.
And if any man shall ask you: Why do you loose him? you shall say thus unto him: Because the Lord hath need of his service.31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '
And they that were sent, went their way, and found the colt standing, as he had said unto them.32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.
And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said to them: Why loose you the colt?33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'
But they said: Because the Lord hath need of him.34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'
And they brought him to Jesus. And casting their garments on the colt, they set Jesus thereon.35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.
And as he went, they spread their clothes underneath in the way.36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,
And when he was now coming near the descent of mount Olivet, the whole multitude of his disciples began with joy to praise God with a loud voice, for all the mighty works they had seen,37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.
Saying: Blessed be the king who cometh in the name of the Lord, peace in heaven, and glory on high!38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!
And some of the Pharisees, from amongst the multitude, said to him: Master, rebuke thy disciples.39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'
To whom he said: I say to you, that if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'
And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying:41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it
If thou also hadst known, and that in this thy day, the things that are to thy peace; but now they are hidden from thy eyes.42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!
For the days shall come upon thee, and thy enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and straiten thee on every side,43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;
And beat thee flat to the ground, and thy children who are in thee: and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou hast not known the time of thy visitation.44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'
And entering into the temple, he began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought.45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,
Saying to them: It is written: My house is the house of prayer. But you have made it a den of thieves.46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'
And he was teaching daily in the temple. And the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people sought to destroy him:47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,
And they found not what to do to him: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.
