1 And Israel at that time abode in Settim, and the people committed fornication with the daughters of Moab,	1 Or mentre Israele si trovava in Setim, il popolo fornicò colle figlie di Moab,
2 Who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate of them, and adored their gods.	2 che lo invitarono ai loro sacrifizi. Israele mangiò, si prostrò dinanzi ai loro dèi,
3 And Israel was initiated to Beelphegor: upon which the Lord being angry,	3 e fu iniziato a Beelfegor. Allora il Signore sdegnato
4 Said to Moses: Take all the princes of the people, and hang them up on gibbets against the sun: that my fury may be turned away from Israel.	4 disse a Mose : « Raduna tutti i principi e fa' impiccare i colpevoli alle forche in faccia al sole, affinchè il mio furore s'allontani da Israele ».
5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel: Let every man kill his neighbours, that have been initiated to Beelphegor.	5 E Mose disse ai giudici d'Israele: « Ciascuno uccida dei suoi quelli che si sono consacrati a Beelfegor ».
6 And behold one of the children of Israel went in before his brethren to a harlot of Madian, in the sight of Moses, and of all the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle.	6 Ed ecco uno dei figli d'Israele, alla presenza dei suoi fratelli, entrò da una prostituta madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutto il popolo che piangeva dinanzi alla porta del Tabernacolo.
7 And when Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose up from the midst; of the multitude, and taking a dagger,	7 Veduto ciò Finees, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio di Aronne (sommo) sacerdote, s'alzò di mezzo all'assemblea, e, preso un pugnale,
8 Went in after the Israelite into the brothel house, and thrust both of them through together, to wit, the man and the woman in the genital parts. And the scourge ceased from the children of Israel:	8 entrò dietro a quell'israelita nel postribolo, e li trafisse ambedue, l'uomo e la donna, nel basso ventre. Allora cessò il flagello tra i figli d'Israele,
9 And there were slain four and twenty thousand men.	9 ma ne morirono ventiquattro mila uomini.
10 And the Lord said to Moses:	10 E il Signore disse a Mose:
11 Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal.	11 « Finees, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio di Aronne sacerdote ha allontanato il mio sdegno dai figli d'Israele; essendo stato animato del mio zelo contro di essi, ha fatto sì che io nella mia indignazione non distrugga i figli d'Israele.
12 Therefore say to him: Behold I give him the peace of my covenant,	12 Per questo digli che io gli dò la pace della mia alleanza,
13 And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel.	13 che sarà, tanto per lui che per i suoi discendenti, un patto di eterno sacerdozio; perchè egli ha avuto zelo pel suo Dio, ed ha espiato la sceleraggine dei figli d'Israele ».
14 And the name of the Israelite, was slain with the woman of Madian, was Zambri the son of Salu, a prince the kindred and tribe of Simeon.	14 Or il nome dell'israelita che fu ucciso colla madianita, era Zambri, figlio di Salu, capo d'una famiglia della tribù di Simeone.
15 And the Madianite woman, that was slain with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Sur, a most noble prince among the Madianites.	15 E la madianita, che fu uccisa insieme, si chiamava Cozbi, figlia di Sur, nobilissimo principe dei Madianiti.
16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	16 E il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:
17 Let the Madianites find you enemies, and slay you them:	17 « Trattate i Madianiti come nemici e uccideteli;
18 Because they also have acted like enemies against you, and have guilefully deceived you by the idol Phogor, and Cozbi their sister, a daughter of a prince of Madian, who was slain in the day the plague for the sacrilege of Phogor.	18 perché essi pure v'hanno trattati da nemici con gl'inganni insidiosi dell'idolo di Fogor, e di Cozbi, figlia del principe di Madian, loro sorella, che fu uccisa il giorno del flagello, a causa del sacrilegio di Eogor ».
