1 At the same time Antiochus prepared for a second journey into Egypt.	1 In quel tempo preparò Antioco di andar la seconda volta in Egitto.
2 And it came to pass that through the whole city of Jerusalem for the space of forty days there were seen horsemen running in the air, in gilded raiment, and armed with spears, like bands of soldiers.	2 E addivenne che si vidde per tutta la città di Ierusalem, per ispazio di XL giorni, nell' aria cavalieri discorrendo, i quali aveano stole deaurate e aste, quasi come squadre armate.
3 And horses set in order by ranks, running one against another, with the shakings of shields, and a multitude of men in helmets, with drawn swords, and casting of darts, and glittering of golden armour, and of harnesses of all sorts.	3 E corsi di cavagli, dirizzati per ordine, con propinquità andavano l' uno contro l' altro, e movimenti di scudi, e moltitudine di elmi con li coltelli stretti, e con gettar di dardi (saette e pietre) e con splendore di arme deaurate, e di ogni generazione di corazze (e panciere).
4 Wherefore all men prayed that these prodigies might turn to good.	4 Per la qual cosa tutti pregavano, che questo segno maraviglioso si convertisse in buona parte.
5 Now when there was gone forth a false rumour, as though Antiochus had been dead, Jason taking with him no fewer than a thousand men, suddenly assaulted the city: and though the citizens ran together to the wall, the city at length was taken, and Menelaus fled into the castle.	5 Ed essendo uscito un falso rumore, quasi come Antioco fosse morto, radunò Iasone non meno di mille uomini, e sùbito assaltò la cittade; e correndo li cittadini alle mura (per difensione), all' ultimo fu presa la città, e Menelao se ne fuggì nella ròcca.
6 But Jason slew his countrymen without mercy, not considering that prosperity against one's own kindred is a very great evil, thinking they had been enemies, and not citizens, whom he conquered.	6 E lasone non perdonava nella uccisione alli suoi cittadini, nè pensava prosperità verso li parenti essere uno gran male, pensando sè esser preso dalla fuga degl' inimici, e non delli cittadini.
7 Yet he did not gee the principality, but received confusion at tile end, for the reward of his treachery, and fled again into the country of the Ammonites.	7 Niente di meno non ottenne il principato, nella fine delle sue insidie prese confusione, e disperso se n' andò un'altra fiata nelle parti degli Ammaniti.
8 At the last having been shut up by Aretas the king of the Arabians, in order for his destruction, flying from city to city, hated by all men, as a forsaker of the laws, and execrable, as an enemy of his country and countrymen, he was thrust out into Egypt:	8 Nell' ultimo, concluso nella morte sua di Areta, tiranno degli Arabi, fuggendo di città in città, era avuto in odio da tutti, come disprezzator delle leggi, e in abominazione come inimico della patria e de' cittadini; e fu cacciato in Egitto.
9 And he that had driven many out of their country, perished in a strange land, going to Lacedemon, as if for kindred sake he should have refuge there:	9 E quello che cacciò molti della patria, perì andato in Lacedemonia disperso, quasi per aver rifugio per lo parentado.
10 But he that had cast out many unburied, was himself cast forth both unlamented and unburied, neither having foreign burial, nor being partaker of the sepulchre of his fathers.	10 E quello che avea lasciati molti non sepulti, esso sanza querela è rimasto insepulto; e non ebbe sepultura aliena, nè anco fu partecipe dello sepolcro della patria.
11 Now when these things were done, the king suspected that the Jews would forsake the alliance: whereupon departing out of Egypt with a furious mind, he took the city by force of arms.	11 E fatte queste cose, suspicò il re i Giudei dovere abbandonar la compagnia; e per questo partito d'Egitto cogli animi depravati, prese coll' arme la città.
12 And commanded the soldiers to kill, and not to spare any that came in their way, and to go up into the houses slay.	12 E comandò alli suoi cavalieri, che dovessono uccidere, e non perdonar alcuno che li venisse incontro, e ch' egli dovessero passando per le case tagliare e uccidere.
13 Thus there was a slaughter of young and old, a destruction of women children, and killing of virgins and infants.	13 Faceasi adunque una grande tagliata di giovani e antichi, di donne e putti grande esterminio, e di vergini e fanciulli gran morte.
14 And there were slain in the space o three whole days fourscore thousand, forty thousand were made prisoners, and as many sold.	14 E furono in tre dì (morti) ottanta milia morti, quaranta milia prigioni, e non meno venduti.
15 But this was not enough; he presumed also to enter into the temple, the most holy in all the world, Menelaus, that traitor to the laws, and to his country, being his guide.	15 Ma nè anco bastò a lui questo; e fu ardito anco di entrare nel templo più santo che fusse in tutta la terra, conducendolo Menelao il quale fu traditor delle leggi e della patria.
16 And taking in his wicked hands the holy vessels, which were given by other kings and cities, for the ornament and the glory of the place, he unworthily handled and profaned them.	16 E pigliando li vasi santi con le loro mani sceleste, li quali erano stati posti dalli re e dalle cittadi in ornamento e gloria del luogo, insieme trattavano indegnamente e contaminavano.
17 Thus Antiochus going astray in mind, did not consider that God was angry for a while, because of the sins of the habitants of the city: and therefore contempt had happened to the place:	17 E così alienato della mente, Antioco non considerava che per li peccati di quelli che abitavano era stato un poco irato il Signore contro alla città; per la qual cagione anco addivenne al luogo questo disprezzo.
18 Otherwise had they not been involved in many sins, as Heliodorus, who was sent by king Seleucus to rob treasury, so this man also, as soon as had come, had been forthwith scourged, and put back from his presumption.	18 Altramente, se non fosse stato che gl' incontrò loro essere involuti in molti peccati, sì come Eliodoro il quale fu mandato da Seleuco re a ispogliare lo erario, anco così costui sùbito venendo saria stato scacciato e flagellato per l'audacia sua.
19 But God did not choose the people for the place's sake, but the place for the people's sake.	19 Ma egli è il vero, che il Signore non elesse la gente per lo luogo, ma lo luogo per la gente.
20 And therefore the place also itself was made partaker of the evils of the people: but afterward shall communicate in the good things thereof, and as it was forsaken in the wrath of almighty God, shall be exalted again with great glory, when the great Lord shall be reconciled.	20 E però il luogo fu fatto partecipe delli mali del popolo; e dopo sì sarà compagno anco delli beni; e quello ch' è stato abbandonato nell' ira di Dio onnipotente, un'altra volta nella grande reconciliazione di Dio sarà esaltato con somma gloria.
21 So when Antiochus had taken away out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents, he went back in all haste to Antioch, thinking through pride, that he might now make the land navigable, and the sea passable on foot: such was the haughtiness of his mind.	21 Adunque Antioco, avendo tolto del tempio mille ottocento talenti, tornossene sùbito in Antiochia, pensando per la superbia sua, la terra (certamente) di condurre a navigare, e lo mare passar a piedi per l'altezza della mente.
22 He left also governors to afflict the people: at Jerusalem, Philip, a Phrygian by birth, but in manners more barbarous than he that set him there:	22 E lasciò soprastanti che affligessero la gente; in Ierusalem lasciò Filippo, il qual era di Frigia, e per costumi più crudele di colui dallo quale era stato constituto;
23 And in Gazarim, Andronicus and Menelaus, who bore a more heavy hand upon the citizens than the rest.	23 e in Garizim Andronico e Menelao, li quali più gravemente soprastavano ai cittadini, che gli altri.
24 And whereas he was set against the Jews, he sent that hateful prince Apollonius with an army of two and twenty thousand men, commanding him to kill all that were of perfect age, and to sell the women and the younger sort.	24 Ed essendosi opposto contro alli Giudei, mandò Apollonio principe odioso con uno esercito di ventiduemilia uomini, e comandolli ch' egli uccidesse tutti quelli di perfetta età, e le donne e li giovani vendesse.
25 Who when he was come to Jerusalem, pretending peace, rested till the holy day of the sabbath: and then the Jews keeping holiday, he commanded his men to take arms.	25 Il quale venendo in Ierusalem, simulando pace, stette cheto per sino al di santo del sabbato; e allora cessando i Giudei da tutte l' opere, comandò a' suoi che pigliassero l' arme.
26 And he slew all that were come forth to see: and running through the city with armed men, he destroyed a very great multitude.	26 E tutti quelli i quali erano venuti allo spettacolo, uccise; e discorrendo la città con gli armati, uccise una grande moltitudine.
27 But Judas Machabeus, who was the tenth, had withdrawn himself into a desert place, and there lived amongst wild beasts in the mountains with his company: and they continued feeding on herbs, that they might not be partakers of the pollution.	27 E Giuda Maccabeo, il quale fu il decimo, se n' andò nel deserto, nel qual luogo vivea in suso i monti con le bestie, insieme con li suoi; e abitavano ivi, mangiando dell' erba, per non esser partecipi di tanta scelerità.
