DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
In the third month of the departure of Israel out of the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the wilderness of Sinai:1 Three months to the day after leaving Egypt, the Israelites reached the desert of Sinai.
For departing out of Raphidim, and coming to the desert of Sinai, they camped in the same place, and there Israel pitched their tents over against the mountain.2 Setting out from Rephidim, they reached the desert of Sinai and pitched camp in the desert; there, facing the mountain, Israel pitched camp.
And Moses went up to God: and the Lord called unto him from the mountain, and said: Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:3 Moses then went up to God, and Yahweh cal ed to him from the mountain, saying, 'Say this to theHouse of Jacob! Tel the Israelites,
You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, how I have carried you upon the wings of eagles, and have taken you to myself.4 "You have seen for yourselves what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you away on eagle'swings and brought you to me.
If therefore you will hear my voice, and keep my covenant, you shall be my peculiar possession above all people: for all the earth is mine.5 So now, if you are real y prepared to obey me and keep my covenant, you, out of all peoples, shall bemy personal possession, for the whole world is mine.
And you shall be to me a priestly kingdom, and a holy nation. Those are the words thou shalt speak to the children of Israel.6 For me you shal be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation." Those are the words you are to say to theIsraelites.'
Moses came, and calling together the elders of the people, he declared all the words which the Lord had commanded.7 So Moses went and summoned the people's elders and acquainted them with everything that Yahwehhad bidden him,
And all the people answered together: All that the Lord hath spoken, we will do. And when Moses had related the people's words to the Lord,8 and the people al replied with one accord, 'Whatever Yahweh has said, we will do.' Moses thenreported to Yahweh what the people had said.
The Lord said to him: Lo, now will I come to thee in the darkness of a cloud, that the people may hear me speaking to thee, and may believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.9 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Look, I shal come to you in a dense cloud so that the people wil hearwhen I speak to you and believe you ever after.' Moses then told Yahweh what the people had said.
And he said to him: Go to the people, and sanctify them to day, and to morrow, and let them wash their garments.10 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go to the people and tel them to sanctify themselves today andtomorrow. They must wash their clothes
And let them be ready against the third day: for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.11 and be ready for the day after tomorrow; for the day after tomorrow, in the sight of al the people,Yahweh wil descend on Mount Sinai.
And thou shalt appoint certain limits to the people round about, and thou shalt say to them: Take heed you go not up into the mount, and that ye touch not the borders thereof: every one that toucheth the mount dying he shall die.12 You wil mark out the limits of the mountain and say, "Take care not to go up the mountain or to touchthe edge of it. Anyone who touches the mountain wil be put to death.
No hands shall touch him, but he shall be stoned to death, or shall be shot through with arrows: whether it be beast, or man, he shall not live. When the trumpet shall begin to sound, then let them go up into the mount.13 No one may lay a hand on him: he must be stoned or shot by arrow; whether man or beast, he shalnot live." When the ram's horn sounds a long blast, they must go up the mountain.'
And Moses came down from the mount to the people, and sanctified them. And when they had washed their garments,14 So Moses came down from the mountain to the people; he made the people sanctify themselves andthey washed their clothes.
He said to them: Be ready against the third day, and come not near your wives.15 He then said to the people, 'Be ready for the day after tomorrow; do not touch a woman.'
And now the third day was come, and the morning appeared: and behold thunders began to be heard, and lightning to flash, and a very thick cloud to cover the mount, and the noise of the trumpet sounded exceeding loud, and the people that was in the camp, feared.16 Now at daybreak two days later, there were peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, dense cloud onthe mountain and a very loud trumpet blast; and, in the camp, al the people trembled.
And when Moses had brought them forth to meet God from the place of the camp, they stood at the bottom of the mount.17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they took their stand at the bottom ofthe mountain.
And all mount Sinai was on a smoke: because the Lord was come down upon it in fire, and the smoke arose from it as out of a furnace: and all the mount was terrible.18 Mount Sinai was entirely wrapped in smoke, because Yahweh had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke rose like smoke from a furnace and the whole mountain shook violently.
And the sound of the trumpet grew by degrees louder and louder, and was drawn out to a greater length: Moses spoke, and God answered him.19 Louder and louder grew the trumpeting. Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder.
And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, in the very top of the mount, and he called Moses unto the top thereof. And when he was gone up thither,20 Yahweh descended on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and Yahweh cal ed Moses to the topof the mountain; and Moses went up.
He said unto him: Go down, and charge the people: lest they should have a mind to pass the limits to see the Lord, and a very great multitude of them should perish.21 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go down and warn the people not to break through to look at Yahweh,or many of them wil perish.
The priests also that come to the Lord, let them be sanctified, lest he strike them.22 Even the priests, who do have access to Yahweh, must sanctify themselves, or Yahweh may burstout against them.'
And Moses said to the Lord: The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou did charge, and command, saying: Set limits about the mount, and sanctify it.23 Moses said to Yahweh, 'The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, since you yourself warned us tomark out the limits of the mountain and declare it sacred.'
And the Lord said to him: Go, get thee down: and thou shalt come up, thou and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people pass the limits, nor come up to the Lord, lest he kill them.24 Yahweh said, 'Away with you! Go down! Then come back bringing Aaron with you. But do not al owthe priests and people to break through to come up to Yahweh, or he may burst out against them.'
And Moses went down to the people and told them all.25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
