1 Now Arphaxad king of the Medes had brought many nations under his dominions, and he built a very strong city, which he called Ecbatana,	1 Arfaxad, rei dos medos, submetera ao seu império um grande número de nações. Ele edificou uma fortaleza de pedras polidas, à qual deu o nome de Ecbátana.
2 Of stones squared and hewed: he made the walls thereof seventy cubits broad, and thirty cubits high, and the towers thereof he made a hundred cubits high. But on the square of them, each side was extended the space of twenty feet.	2 Cercou-a de muralhas de setenta côvados de altura e trinta de largura, e pôs-lhe torres de cem côvados de altura.
3 And he made the gates thereof according to the height of the towers:	3 Estas eram de forma quadrada, e seus lados estendiam-se por um espaço de vinte pés. As portas tinham uma altura proporcionada à das torres.
4 And he gloried as a mighty one in the force of his army and in the glory of his chariots.	4 Ele gloriava-se do poder invencível do seu exército e da imponência de seus carros.
5 Now in the twelfth year of his reign, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, who reigned in Ninive the great city, fought against Arphaxad and overcame him,	5 Ora, no décimo segundo ano de seu reinado, Nabucodonosor, que reinava sobre os assírios em Nínive, a grande cidade, fez guerra a Arfaxad, e venceu-o
6 In the great plain which is called Ragua, about the Euphrates, and the Tigris, and the Jadason, in the plain of Erioch the king of the Elicians.	6 na grande planície chamada Ragau. Aliaram-se-lhe todos os habitantes das regiões vizinhas do Tigre, do Eufrates e do Jadason, na planície de Erioc, rei dos eliceus.
7 Then was the kingdom of Nabuchodonosor exalted, and his heart was elevated: and he sent to all that dwelt in Cilicia and Damascus, and Libanus,	7 Então engrandeceu-se o reino de Nabucodonosor e seu coração encheu-se de orgulho. Mandou emissários a todos os habitantes da Cilícia, de Damasco, do Líbano,
8 And to the nations that are in Carmelus, and Cedar, and to the inhabitants of Galilee in the great plain of Asdrelon,	8 aos povos do Carmelo e de Cedar, aos galileus, na grande planície de Esdrelon,
9 And to all that were in Samaria, and beyond the river Jordan even to Jerusalem, and all the land of Jesse till you come to the borders of Ethiopia.	9 aos habitantes de Samaria e aos povos de além do Jordão até Jerusalém, a toda a terra de Gessém e até aos confins da Etiópia.
10 To all these Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, sent messengers:	10 A todos esses povos enviou Nabucodonosor emissários,
11 But they all with one mind refused, and sent them back empty, and rejected them without honour.	11 mas todos protestaram unanimemente e os despediram de mãos vazias, chegando até a expulsá-los com desprezo.
12 Then king Nabuchodonosor being angry against all that land, swore by his throne and kingdom that he would revenge himself of all those countries.	12 À vista disso, encheu-se de cólera o rei Nabucodonosor contra todos esses povos, e jurou pelo seu trono e pelo seu reino que havia de tomar vingança de todos eles.
