Nehemiah 5

1 Now there was a great cry of the people, and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.	1 Les gens du peuple et leurs femmes se plaignirent de leurs frères juifs.
2 And there were some that said: Our sons and our daughters are very many: Yet us take up corn for the price of them, and let us eat and live.	2 Certains disaient: - “Nous devons donner nos fils et nos filles en gage pour recevoir du blé, manger et vivre.”
3 And there were some that said: Let us mortgage our lands, and our vineyards, and our houses, and let us take corn because of the famine.	3 D’autres disaient: - “Nous devons engager nos champs, nos vignes et nos maisons pour recevoir du blé durant cette famine.”
4 And others said: Let us borrow money for the king's tribute, and let us give up our fields and vineyards:	4 D’autres encore disaient: - “Pour payer l’impôt du roi, nous avons dû emprunter de l’argent sur nos champs et sur nos vignes.
5 And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren: and our children as their children. Behold we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters, and some of our daughters are bondwomen already, neither have we wherewith to redeem them, and our fields and our vineyards other men possess.	5 Nous sommes pourtant du même sang que nos frères et nos enfants valent autant que les leurs; or nous devons donner en gage nos fils et nos filles, et souvent on profite de nos filles. Nous n’y pouvons rien puisque nos champs et nos vignes appartiennent déjà à d’autres que nous.”
6 And I was exceedingly angry when I heard their cry according to these words.	6 En entendant cette plainte et ces paroles, je me suis mis dans une grande colère.
7 And my heart thought with myself: and I rebuked the nobles and magistrates, and said to them: Do you every one exact usury of your brethren ? And I gathered together a great assembly against them,	7 Après y avoir réfléchi, j’ai secoué sévèrement les nobles et les fonctionnaires. Je leur ai dit: - “Chacun de vous fait peser un lourd fardeau sur ses frères!” Alors j’ai convoqué une grande assemblée,
8 And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them ? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.	8 et je leur ai dit: - “Nous avons selon nos moyens racheté nos frères juifs qui avaient été vendus parmi les nations, et aujourd’hui c’est vous qui vendez vos frères, ou c’est à nous qu’ils sont vendus.” Tous se taisaient, ils n’avaient rien à répliquer.
9 And I said to them: The thing you do is not good: why walk you not in the fear of our God, that we be not exposed to the reproaches of the Gentiles our enemies?	9 J’ai ajouté: - “Ce que vous faites là n’est vraiment pas bien. Marchez plutôt dans la crainte de notre Dieu et vous n’aurez pas à redouter le mépris des nations ennemies.
10 Both I and my brethren, and my servants, have lent money and corn to many: let us all agree not to call for it again; let us forgive the debt that is owing to us.	10 Moi aussi, et mes frères, et mes hommes, nous leur avons prêté de l’argent et du blé: eh bien, remettons-leur cette dette!
11 Restore ye to them this day their fields, and their vineyards, and their oliveyards, and their houses: and the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which you mere wont to exact of them, give it rather for them.	11 Rendez-leur immédiatement leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons; remettez-leur la dette en argent, en blé, en vin ou en huile qu’ils ont envers vous.”
12 And they said: We will restore, and we will require nothing of them: and we will do as thou sayest. And I called the priests and took an oath of them, to do according to what I had said.	12 Tous répondirent: - “Nous rendrons ce que nous avons pris en gage, nous ne réclamerons rien et nous ferons comme tu l’as dit.” Alors j’ai appelé les prêtres et j’ai fait jurer à tout le monde de mettre en pratique cette promesse.
13 Moreover I shook my lap, and said: So may God shake every man that shall not accomplish this word, out of his house, and out of his labours, thus may he be shaken out, and become empty. And all the multitude said: Amen. And they praised God. And the people did according to what was said.	13 Ensuite, j’ai secoué le pli de mon vêtement et j’ai dit: - “Que Dieu secoue ainsi hors de sa maison et de ses biens, tout homme qui ne tiendra pas cette parole! Qu’il soit ainsi secoué et vidé!” Toute l’assemblée répondit: - “Amen!” et on loua Yahvé. Quant au peuple, il respecta cet engagement.
14 And from the day, in which the king commanded me to be governor in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my brethren did not eat the yearly allowance that was due to the governors.	14 Depuis le jour où l’on m’a nommé gouverneur du pays de Juda, depuis la vingtième année d’Artaxerxès jusqu’à la trente-deuxième année de son règne, c’est-à-dire pendant 12 ans, ni moi, ni mes frères, n’avons touché au “pain du gouverneur”.
15 But the former governors that had been before me, were chargeable to the people, and took of them in bread, and wine, and in money every day forty sides: and their officers also oppressed the people. But I did not so for the fear of God.	15 Les premiers gouverneurs qui m’ont précédé, écrasaient le peuple. Chaque jour ils lui prenaient pour 400 pièces d’argent de pain et de vin, et leurs hommes abusaient du peuple. Moi je n’ai pas fait pareil, car je craignais Dieu.
16 Moreover I built in the work of the wall, and I bought no land, and all my servants were gathered together to the work.	16 J’étais si absorbé par le travail des remparts que je n’ai pas acheté de champs, et tous mes hommes se trouvaient là pour le travail.
17 The Jews also and the magistrates to the number of one hundred and fifty men, were at my table, besides them that came to us from among the nations that were round about us.	17 J’avais à ma table les nobles et les fonctionnaires au nombre de 150, sans compter ceux qui arrivaient des nations étrangères.
18 And there was prepared for me day by day one ox, and six choice rams, besides fowls, and once in ten days I gave store of divers wines, and many other things: yet I did not require my yearly allowance as governor: for the people were very much impoverished.	18 Chaque jour on devait préparer un bœuf, 6 moutons de choix et des volailles: tout cela était à mes frais; tous les 10 jours on apportait de nombreuses outres de vin. Malgré cela, je n’ai pas réclamé le “pain du gouverneur”, car je voyais que ce travail pesait lourdement sur le peuple.
19 Remember me, O my God, for good according to all that I have done for this people.	19 Souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, n’oublie pas tout ce que j’ai fait pour ce peuple.
