1 And Satan rose up against Israel: and moved David to number Israel.	1 Satan se dressa contre Israël et il incita David à dénombrer les Israélites.
2 And David said to Joab, and to the rulers of the people: Go, and number Israel from Bersabee even to Dan, and bring me the number of them that I may know it.	2 David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: "Allez compter Israël, de Bersabée à Dan, puisrevenez m'en faire connaître le chiffre."
3 And Joab answered: The Lord make his people a hundred times more than they are : but, my lord the king, are they not all thy servants: why doth my lord seek this thing, which may be imputed as a sin to Israel?	3 Joab répondit: "Que Yahvé accroisse son peuple de cent fois autant! Monseigneur le roi, nesont-ils pas tous les serviteurs de Monseigneur? Pourquoi Monseigneur fait-il cette enquête? Pourquoi Israëldeviendrait-il coupable?"
4 But the king's word rather prevailed: and Joab departed, and went through all Israel: and returned to Jerusalem.	4 Cependant l'ordre du roi s'imposa à Joab. Joab partit, il parcourut tout Israël, puis rentra àJérusalem.
5 And he gave David the number of them, whom he had surveyed: and all the number of Israel was found to be eleven hundred thousand men that drew the sword: and of Juda four hundred and seventy thousand fighting men.	5 Joab fournit à David le chiffre obtenu pour le recensement du peuple; tout Israël comptait1.100.000 hommes tirant l'épée, et Juda 470.000 hommes tirant l'épée.
6 But Levi and Benjamin he did not number: for Joab unwillingly executed the king's orders.	6 L'ordre du roi avait tant répugné à Joab qu'il n'avait recensé ni Lévi ni Benjamin.
7 And God was displeased with this thing that was commanded: and he struck Israel.	7 Dieu vit avec déplaisir cette affaire et il frappa Israël.
8 And David said to God: I have sinned exceedingly in doing this: I beseech thee take away the iniquity of thy servant, for I have done foolishly.	8 David dit alors à Dieu: "C'est un grand péché que j'ai commis en cette affaire! Maintenant,veuille pardonner cette faute à ton serviteur, car j'ai commis une grande folie."
	9 Yahvé dit alors à Gad, le voyant de David:
10 And the Lord spoke to Gad the seer of David, saying:	10 "Va dire à David: Ainsi parle Yahvé. Je te propose trois choses: choisis-en une et jel'exécuterai pour toi."
11 Go, and speak to David, and tell him: Thus saith the Lord: I give thee the choice of three things: choose one which thou wilt, and I will do it to thee.	11 Donc Gad se rendit chez David et lui dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. Il te faut accepter
12 And when Gad was come to David, he said to him: Thus saith the Lord: choose which thou wilt:	12 soit trois années de famine, soit un désastre de trois mois devant tes ennemis, l'épée de tesadversaires dans les reins, soit l'épée de Yahvé et trois jours de peste dans le pays, l'ange de Yahvé ravageanttout le territoire d'Israël! Vois maintenant ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie."
13 Either three years' famine: or three months to flee from thy enemies, and not to be able to escape their sword: or three days to have the sword of the Lord, and pestilence in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying in all the coasts of Israel: now therefore see what I shall answer him who sent me.	13 David répondit à Gad: "Je suis dans une grande anxiété... Ah! que je tombe entre les mainsde Yahvé, car sa miséricorde est immense, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!"
14 And David said to Gad: I am on every side in a great strait: but it is better for me to fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are many, than into the hands of men.	14 Yahvé envoya donc la peste en Israël et, parmi les Israélites, 70.000 hommes tombèrent.
15 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel. And there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.	15 Puis Dieu envoya l'ange vers Jérusalem pour l'exterminer; mais au moment de l'exterminer,Yahvé regarda et se repentit de ce mal; et il dit à l'ange exterminateur: "Assez! Retire ta main." L'ange de Yahvése tenait alors près de l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen.
16 And he sent an angel to Jerusalem, to strike it: and as he was striking it, the Lord beheld, and took pity for the greatness of the evil: and said to the angel that destroyed: It is enough, now stop thy hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the thrashing	16 Levant les yeux, David vit l'ange de Yahvé qui se tenait entre terre et ciel, l'épée dégainée àla main, tendue vers Jérusalem. Revêtus de sacs, David et les anciens tombèrent alors face contre terre,
17 And David lifting up his eyes, saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand, turned against Jerusalem: and both he and the ancients clothed in haircloth, fell down flat on the ground.	17 et David dit à Dieu: "N'est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné de recenser le peuple? N'est-ce pasmoi qui ai péché et qui ai commis le mal? Mais ceux-là, c'est le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Yahvé, mon Dieu, queta main s'appesantisse donc sur moi et sur ma famille, mais que ton peuple échappe au fléau!"
18 And David said to God: Am not I he that commanded the people to be numbered? It is I that have sinned: it is I that have done the evil: but as for this flock, what hath it deserved? O Lord my God, let thy hand be turned, I beseech thee, upon me, and upon my father's house: and let not thy people be destroyed.	18 L'ange de Yahvé dit alors à Gad: "Que David monte et élève un autel à Yahvé sur l'aired'Ornân le Jébuséen."
19 And the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to tell David, to go up, and build an altar to the Lord God in the thrashingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.	19 David monta donc selon la parole que Gad lui avait dite au nom de Yahvé.
20 and David went up, according to the word of Gad, which he spoke to him in the name of the Lord.	20 Or, en se retournant, Ornân avait vu l'ange et il se cachait avec ses quatre fils. Ornân était entrain de battre le froment
21 Now when Ornan looked up, and saw the angel, he and his four sons hid themselves: for at that time he was thrashing wheat in the floor.	21 lorsque David se rendit auprès de lui. Ornân regarda, vit David, sortit de l'aire, et seprosterna devant David, la face contre terre.
22 And as David was coming to Ornan, Ornan saw him, and went out of the thrashingfloor to meet him, and bowed down to him with his face to the ground.	22 David dit alors à Ornân: "Cède-moi l'emplacement de cette aire afin que j'y construise unautel pour Yahvé. Cède-le-moi pour sa pleine valeur en argent. Ainsi le fléau s'écartera du peuple."
23 And David said to him: Give me this place of thy thrashingfloor, that I may build therein an altar to the Lord: but thou shalt take of me as much money as it is worth, that the plague may cease from the people.	23 Ornân dit alors à David: "Prends, et que Monseigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semble bon!Vois: je donne les boeufs pour les holocaustes, le traîneau pour le bois et le grain pour l'oblation. Je donne letout."
24 And Ornan said to David: Take it, and let my lord the king do all that pleaseth him: and moreover the oxen also I give for a holocaust, and the drays for wood, and the wheat for the sacrifice: I will give it all willingly.	24 Le roi David répondit à Ornân: "Non pas! je veux l'acheter pour sa pleine valeur en argent;car je ne veux pas prendre pour Yahvé ce qui t'appartient et offrir ainsi des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien."
25 And king David said to him: It shall not be so, but I will give thee money as much se it is worth: for I must not take it from thee, and so offer to the Lord holocausts free cost.	25 David donna à Ornân pour ce lieu le poids de 600 sicles d'or.
26 So David gave to Ornan for the place, six hundred sides of gold of just weight.	26 David construisit là un autel pour Yahvé, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices decommunion. Il invoqua Yahvé; Yahvé lui répondit en faisant tomber du ciel le feu sur l'autel des holocaustes
27 And he built there an altar to the Lord: and he offered holocausts, and peace offerings, and he called upon the Lord, and he heard him by sending Are from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.	27 et il ordonna à l'ange de remettre l'épée au fourreau.
28 And the Lord commanded the angel: and he put up his sword again into the sheath.	28 A cette époque, voyant que Yahvé lui avait répondu sur l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen, David yfit un sacrifice.
29 And David seeing that the Lord had heard him in the thrashingfloor of Oman the Jebusite, forthwith offered victims there.	29 La Demeure que Moïse avait faite dans le désert et l'autel des holocaustes se trouvaient àcette époque sur le haut lieu de Gabaôn,
30 But the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the desert, and the altar of holocausts, was at that time in the high place of Gabaon.	30 mais David n'avait pu y aller devant Dieu pour s'adresser à lui, tant l'épée de l'ange deYahvé lui avait fait peur.
