1 And Athalia the mother of Ochozias seeing that her son was dead, arose, and slew all the royal seed.	1 Voyant que son fils Okozias était mort, Athalie, sa mère, décida de mettre à mort toute la descendance du roi.
2 But Josaba the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ochozias, took Joas the son of Ochozias, and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, out of the bedchamber with his nurse: and hid him from the face of Athalia, so that he was not slain.	2 Pendant que l’on mettait à mort tous les fils du roi, Yochéba, fille du roi Joram et sœur d’Okozias, retira discrètement l’un d’entre eux, Joas fils d’Okozias. Elle fit passer l’enfant avec sa nourrice dans la chambre des lits. Elle put ainsi le cacher à Athalie et il ne fut pas mis à mort.
3 And he was with her six years hid in the house of the Lord. And Athalia reigned over the land.	3 Durant six années il demeura caché auprès de Yochéba dans la Maison de Yahvé, tandis qu’Athalie régnait sur le pays.
4 And in the seventh year Joiada seat, and taking the centurions and the soldiers, brought them in to him into the temple of the Lord, and made a covenant with them: and taking an oath of them in the house of the Lord, shewed them the king's son:	4 La septième année, le prêtre Yoyada envoya chercher les officiers des Kariens et la garde. Il les fit entrer près de lui dans la Maison de Yahvé, et là il fit une alliance avec eux; après leur avoir fait prêter serment dans la Maison de Yahvé, il leur montra le fils du roi.
5 And he commanded them, saying: This is the thing that you must do:	5 Il leur dit alors: “Voici ce que vous allez faire: un tiers d’entre vous, ceux qui prennent leur service le jour du sabbat, montera la garde au palais royal;
6 Let a third part of you go in on the sabbath, and keep the watch of the king's house. And let a third part be at the gate of Sur: and let a third part be at the gate behind the dwelling of the shieldbearers: and you shall keep the watch of the house of Messa.	6 un tiers se tiendra à la Porte de Fondation et un autre tiers à la porte qui se trouve en face des gardes; vous monterez alternativement la garde dans la Maison.
7 But let two parts of you, all that go forth on the sabbath, keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.	7 Deux sections parmi vous, tous ceux qui finissent leur service le jour du sabbat, monteront la garde au Temple de Yahvé, autour du roi.
8 And you shall compass him round about, having weapons in your hands: and if any man shall enter the precinct of the temple, let him be slain: and you shall be with the king coming in and going out.	8 Vous ferez cercle autour du roi, chacun aura son arme à la main, et si quelqu’un cherche à forcer vos rangs, vous le mettrez à mort. Vous serez aux côtés du roi dans tous ses mouvements.”
9 And the centurions did according to all things that Joiada the priest had commanded them: and taking every one their men, that went in on the sabbath, with them that went out on the sabbath, came to Joiada the priest.	9 Les officiers firent tout ce qu’avait commandé le prêtre Yoyada; chacun prit ses hommes, ceux qui commençaient leur service le jour du sabbat et ceux qui le finissaient, et ils se rassemblèrent autour du prêtre Yoyada.
10 And he gave them the spears, and the arms of king David, which were in the house of the Lord.	10 Le prêtre donna aux officiers les lances et les boucliers du roi David qui se trouvaient dans la Maison de Yahvé;
11 And they stood having every one their weapons in their hands, from the right side of the temple, unto the left side of the altar, and of the temple, about the king.	11 les gardes étaient à leur poste, chacun tenant son arme à la main, depuis le côté droit du Temple jusqu’au côté gauche, entourant l’autel et la Maison.
12 And he brought forth the king's son, and put the diadem upon him, and the testimony: and they made him king, and anointed him: and clapping their hands. they said, God save the king.	12 Alors le prêtre fit avancer le fils du roi et il lui remit la couronne et les bracelets royaux. On le proclama roi et on le consacra; tout le monde applaudissait et criait: “Vive le roi!”
13 And Athalia heard the noise of the people running: and going in to the people into the temple of the Lord,	13 En entendant les cris du peuple, Athalie se dirigea vers l’attroupement de la Maison de Yahvé.
14 She saw the king standing upon a tribunal, as the manner was, and the singers, and the trumpets near him, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and sounding the trumpets: and she rent her garments, and cried: A conspiracy, a conspiracy.	14 Elle regarda: le roi était debout sur l’estrade selon la coutume, les chefs et les joueurs de trompette entouraient le roi, et tout le peuple-du-pays était en fête et sonnait de la trompette. Alors Athalie déchira ses habits et cria: “Trahison! Trahison!”
15 But Joiada commended the centurions that were over the army, and said to them: Have her forth without the precinct of the temple, and whosoever shall follow her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest had said: Let her not be slain in the temple of the Lord.	15 Le prêtre Yoyada donna cet ordre aux officiers: “Sortez-la hors du Temple, et si quelqu’un la suit, frappez-le de l’épée!” En effet le prêtre se disait: “Il ne faut pas la mettre à mort dans la Maison de Yahvé.”
16 And they laid hands on her: and thrust her out by the way by which the horses go in, by the palace, and she was slain there.	16 Ils mirent donc la main sur elle et l’entraînèrent par le chemin qui mène à l’Entrée des Chevaux jusqu’au palais royal; là, elle fut mise à mort.
17 And Joiada made a covenant between the Lord, and the king, and the people, that they should be the people of the Lord, and between the king and the people.	17 Yoyada conclut une alliance entre Yahvé, le roi et le peuple, pour que tout le peuple se conduise vraiment en peuple de Yahvé.
18 And all the people of the land went into the temple of Baal, and broke down his altars, and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly: they slew also Mathan the priest of Baal before the altar. And the priest set guards in the house of the Lord.	18 Tout le peuple-du-pays vint au temple de Baal et on le démolit, on y brisa les autels et les stèles; quant à Mattan, le prêtre de Baal, on le tua devant les autels. Le prêtre plaça des gardes au Temple de Yahvé,
19 And he took the centurions, and the bands of the Cerethi and the Phelethi, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king from the house of the Lord: and they came by the way of the gate of the shieldbearers into the palace. and he sat on the throne of the kings.	19 il prit avec lui les officiers, les Kariens, les gardes et tout le peuple-du-pays; on fit descendre le roi du Temple de Yahvé jusqu’au palais royal par le chemin de la Porte des Gardes et là il s’assit sur le trône royal.
20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet: but Athalia was slain with the sword in the king's house.	20 Tout le peuple-du-pays était en fête, et la ville avait retrouvé la paix; quant à Athalie, on l’avait mise à mort par l’épée dans le palais royal.
21 Now Joas was seven years old, when he began to reign.
