1 Now it came to pass, after Saul was dead, that David returned from the slaughter of the Amalecites, and abode two days in Siceleg.	1 La mort de Saül survint peu après que David avait massacré les Amalécites: depuis deux jours déjà il était revenu à Siklag.
2 And on the third day, there appeared a man who came out of Saul's camp, with his garments rent, and dust strewed on his head: and when he came to David, he fell upon his face, and adored.	2 Le troisième jour un homme arriva du camp de Saül, il avait des habits déchirés et de la terre sur la tête. Dès qu’il arriva près de David, il se jeta à terre et se prosterna.
3 And David said to him: From whence comest thou? And he said to him: I am fled out of the camp of Israel.	3 David lui dit: “D’où viens-tu?” Il répondit: “Je me suis sauvé du camp d’Israël.”
4 And David said unto him: What is the matter that is come to pass? tell me. He said: The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people are fallen and dead: moreover Saul and Jonathan his son are slain.	4 David lui dit: “Comment les choses se sont-elles passées? Dis-le moi donc.” Cet homme répondit: “Le peuple s’est enfui du champ de bataille, beaucoup dans le peuple sont tombés et sont morts, Saül aussi et son fils Jonathan sont morts.”
5 And David said to the young man that told him: How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son, are dead?	5 David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts?”
6 And the young man that told him, said: I came by chance upon mount Gelboe, and Saul leaned upon his spear: and the chariots and horsemen drew nigh unto him,	6 Il répondit: “Je me trouvais par hasard sur les monts de Guelboé. Saül s’appuyait sur sa lance, les chars et les cavaliers le serraient de près.
7 And looking behind him, and seeing me, he called me. And I answered, Here am I.	7 Alors il me voit, il se retourne et m’appelle. Je lui dis: Me voici.
8 And he said to me: Who art thou? And I said to him: I am an Amalecite.	8 Il me dit: Qui es-tu? Je lui dis: Je suis un Amalécite.
9 And he said to me: Stand over me, and kill me: for anguish is come upon me, and as yet my whole life is in me.	9 Il me dit: Approche-toi et donne-moi la mort, je suis encore plein de force et pourtant me voici pris de vertige.
10 So standing over him, I killed him: for I knew that he could not live after the fall: and I took the diadem that was on his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm and have brought them hither to thee, my lord.	10 Alors je me suis approché et je l’ai tué car je savais bien qu’il ne survivrait pas une fois tombé à terre, puis j’ai pris la couronne qui était sur sa tête, la chaîne qu’il portait au bras, et je les ai apportées ici à mon seigneur.”
11 Then David took hold of his garments and rent them, and likewise all the men that were with him.	11 David déchira ses habits, et tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui firent de même.
12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until evening for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, because they were fallen by the sword.	12 Ils poussèrent une grande lamentation, ils pleurèrent, ils jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir à cause de Saül et de son fils Jonathan, à cause du peuple de Yahvé et de la maison d’Israël qui étaient tombés sous l’épée.
13 And David said to the young man that told him: Whence art thou? He answered: I am the son of a stranger of Amalee.	13 David dit ensuite au jeune homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “D’où es-tu?” Il répondit: “Je suis un étranger dans ce pays, fils d’un Amalécite.”
14 David said to him: Why didst thou not fear to put out thy hand to kill the Lord's anointed?	14 David lui dit: “Comment donc as-tu osé frapper à mort celui que Yahvé avait consacré?”
15 And David calling one of his servants, said: Go near and fall upon him. And he struck him so that he died.	15 Alors David appela l’un de ses compagnons et lui dit: “Approche et frappe-le.” Il le frappa et il mourut.
16 And David said to him: Thy blood be upon thy own head: for thy own mouth hath spoken against thee, saying: I have slain the Lord's anointed.	16 David dit encore: “Que ton sang retombe sur ta tête. Tu t’es condamné toi-même quand tu as dit que tu avais frappé à mort l’homme consacré par Yahvé.”
17 And David made this kind of lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son.	17 Puis David entonna une lamentation sur Saül et sur son fils Jonathan
18 (Also he commanded that they should teach the children of Juda the use of the bow, as it is written in the book of the just.) And he said: Consider, O Israel, for them that are dead, wounded on thy high places.	18 et il ordonna de l’apprendre aux fils de Juda: c’est le chant de l’arc, qu’on peut lire dans le livre du Juste.
19 The illustrious of Israel are slain upon thy mountains: how are the valiant fallen?	19 “Comment sont-ils tombés sur les montagnes, ces héros qui faisaient la gloire d’Israël?
20 Tell it not in Geth, publish it not in the streets of Ascalon: lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph,	20 Ne l’annoncez pas dans Gat, ne portez pas la nouvelle dans les rues d’Ashkélon, ne donnez pas cette joie aux femmes Philistines, aux filles des incirconcis!
21 Ye mountains of Gelboe, let neither dew, nor rain come upon you, neither be they fields of firstfruits: for there was cast away the shield of the valiant, the shield of Saul as though he had not been anointed with oil.	21 Que plus jamais rosée ni pluie ne tombent sur vous, montagnes de Guelboé, campagne verdoyante: c’est là que fut profané le bouclier des héros. Il ne fallait pas d’huile pour le bouclier de Saül,
22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the valiant, the arrow of Jonathan never turned back, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.	22 mais le sang des blessés, la graisse des héros. Ni l’arc de Jonathan ne reculait, ni l’épée de Saül ne frappait dans le vide.
23 Saul and Jonathan, lovely, and comely in their life, even in death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.	23 Vous étiez aimés, désirés, Saül et Jonathan: ni la vie ni la mort ne vous ont séparés. Ils étaient plus rapides que les aigles, ils étaient plus forts que les lions.
24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with scarlet in delights, who gave ornaments of gold for your attire.	24 Pleurez sur Saül, filles d’Israël! Il vous revêtait d’étoffes de couleur, sur vos robes de fête il posait des bijoux d’or.
25 How are the valiant fallen in battle? Jonathan slain in the high places?	25 Comment sont-ils tombés, ces héros? Qui frappa à mort Jonathan, au cœur du combat?
26 I grieve for thee, my brother Jonathan: exceeding beautiful, and amiable to me above the love of women. As the mother loveth her only son, so did I love thee.	26 J’ai le cœur brisé pour toi, Jonathan, mon frère, tu m’étais si cher! Ton amour était pour moi, plus merveilleux que l’amour des femmes.
27 How are the valiant fallen, and the weapons of war perished?	27 Comment sont-ils morts, les héros? Comment furent-elles brisées, les armes de guerre?”
