1 Then Joseph went in and told Pharao, saying: My father and brethren, their sheep and their herds, and all that they possess, are come out of the land of Chanaan: and behold they stay in the land of Gessen.	1 Vino, pues, José a dar parte a Faraón, diciendo: «Mi padre, mis hermanos, sus ovejas y vacadas y todo lo suyo han venido de Canaán, y ya están en el país de Gosen.»
2 Five men also the last of his brethren, he presented before the king:	2 Luego, de entre todos sus hermanos tomó consigo a cinco varones y se los presentó a Faraón.
3 And he asked them: What is your occupation? They answered: Re thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.	3 Dijo Faraón a los hermanos: «¿Cuál es vuestro oficio?» Respondieron a Faraón: «Pastores de ovejas son tus siervos, lo mismo que nuestros padres.»
4 We are come to sojourn in thy land, because there is no grass for the flocks of thy servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Chanaan: and we pray thee to give orders that we thy servants may be in the land of Gessen.	4 Y dijeron a Faraón: «Hemos venido a residir en esta tierra, porque no hay pastos para los rebaños que tienen tus siervos, por ser grave el hambre en Canaán. Así pues, deja morar a tus siervos en el país de Gosen.»
5 The king therefore said to Joseph: Thy father and thy brethren are come to thee.
6 The land of Egypt is before thee: make them dwell in the best place, and give them the land of Gessen. And if thou knowest that there are industrious men among them, make them rulers over my cattle.
7 After this Joseph brought in his to the king, and presented him before him: and he blessed him.	7 José llevó a su padre Jacob y le presentó delante de Faraón, y Jacob bendijo a Faraón.
8 And being asked by him: How many are the days of the years of thy life?	8 Dijo Faraón a Jacob: «¿Cuántos años tienes?»
9 He answered: The days of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years, few, and evil, and they are not come up to the days of the pilgrimage of my fathers.	9 Respondió Jacob a Faraón: «Los años de mis andanzas hacen 130 años: pocos y malos han sido los años de mi vida, y no han llegado a igualar los años de vida de mis padres, en el tiempo de sus andanzas.»
10 And blessing the king, he went out.	10 Bendijo, pues, Jacob a Faraón, y salió de su presencia.
11 But Joseph gave a possession to his father and his brethren in Egypt, in the best place of the land, in Ramesses, as Pharao had commanded.	11 José instaló a su padre y sus hermanos, asignándoles predio en territorio egipcio, en lo mejor del país, en el país de Ramsés, según lo había mandado Faraón.
12 And he nourished them, and all his father's house, allowing food to every one.	12 Y José proveyó al sustento familiar de su padre y sus hermanos y toda la casa de su padre.
13 For in the whole world there was want of bread, and a famine had oppressed the land: more especially of Egypt and Chanaan.	13 No había pan en todo el país, porque el hambre era gravísima y tanto Egipto como Canaán estaban muertos de hambre.
14 Out of which he gathered up all the money for the corn which they bought, and brought it into the king's treasure.	14 Entonces José se hizo con toda la plata existente en Egipto y Canaán a cambio del grano que ellos compraban, y llevó José aquella plata al palacio de Faraón.
15 And when the buyers wanted money, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying: Give us bread: why should we die in thy presence, having now net money.	15 Agotada la plata de Egipto y de Canaán, acudió Egipto en masa a José diciendo: «Danos pan. ¿Por qué hemos de morir en tu presencia ahora que se ha agotado la plata?»
16 And he answered them: Bring your cattle, and for them I will give you food, if you have no money.	16 Dijo José: «Entregad vuestros ganados y os daré pan por vuestros ganados, ya que se ha agotado la plata.»
17 And when they had brought them, he gave them food in exchange for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, end asses and he maintained them that year for the exchange of their cattle.	17 Trajeron sus ganados a José y José les dio pan a cambio de caballos, ovejas, vacas y burros. Y les abasteció de pan a trueque de todos sus ganados por aquel año.
18 And they came the second year, and said to him: We will not hide from our lord, how that our money is spent, and our cattle also are gone: neither art thou ignorant that we have nothing now left but our bodies and our lands.	18 Cumplido el año, acudieron al año siguiente y le dijeron: «No disimularemos a nuestro señor que se ha agotado la plata, y también los ganados pertenecen ya a nuestro señor; no nos queda a disposición de nuestro señor nada, salvo nuestros cuerpos y nuestras tierras.
19 Why therefore shall we die before thy eyes? we will be thins, both we and our lands: buy us to be the king's servants, and give us seed, lest for want of tillers the land be turned into a wilderness.	19 ¿Por qué hemos de morir delante de tus ojos así nosotros como nuestras tierras? Aprópiate de nosotros y de nuestras tierras a cambio de pan, y nosotros con nuestras tierras pasaremos a ser esclavos de Faraón. Pero danos simiente para que vivamos y no muramos, y el suelo no quede desolado.»
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt, every man selling his possessions, because of the greatness of the famine. And he brought it into Pharao's hands:	20 De este modo se apropió José todo el suelo de Egipto para Faraón, pues los egipcios vendieron cada uno su campo porque el hambre les apretaba, y la tierra vino a ser de Faraón.
21 And all its people from one end of the borders of Egypt, even to the other end thereof,	21 En cuanto al pueblo, lo redujo a servidumbre, de cabo a cabo de las fronteras de Egipto.
22 Except the land of the priests, which had been given them by the king: to whom also a certain allowance of food was given out of the public stores, and therefore they were not forced to sell their possessions.	22 Tan sólo las tierras de los sacerdotes no se las apropió, porque los sacerdotes tuvieron tal privilegio de Faraón, y comieron de dicho privilegio que les concedió Faraón. Por lo cual no vendieron sus tierras.
23 Then Joseph said to the people : Behold as you see, both you and your lands belong to Pharao: take seed and sow the fields,	23 Dijo entonces José al pueblo: «He aquí que os he adquirido hoy para Faraón a vosotros y vuestras tierras. Ahí tenéis simiente: sembrad la tierra,
24 That you may have corn. The fifth part you shall give to the king: the other four you shall have for seed, and for food for your families and children.	24 y luego, cuando la cosecha, daréis el quinto a Faraón y las otras cuatro partes serán para vosotros, para siembra del campo, y para alimento vuestro y de vuestros familiares, para alimento de vuestras criaturas.»
25 And they answered: Our life is in thy hand: only let my lord look favourably upon us, and we will gladly serve the king.	25 Dijeron ellos: «Nos has salvado la vida. Hallemos gracia a los ojos de mi señor, y seremos siervos de Faraón.»
26 From that time unto this day, in the whole land of Egypt, the fifth part is paid to the king, and it is become as a law, except the land of the priests, which was free from this covenant.	26 Y José les impuso por norma, vigente hasta la fecha respecto a todo el agro egipcio, dar el quinto a Faraón. Tan sólo el territorio de los sacerdotes no pasó a ser de Faraón.
27 So Israel dwelt in Egypt, that is, in the land of Gessen, and possessed it: and grew, and was multiplied exceedingly.	27 Israel residió en Egipto, en el país de Gosen; se afincaron en él y fueron fecundos y se multiplicaron sobremanera.
28 And he lived in it seventeen years: and all the days of his life came to a hundred and forty-seven years.	28 Jacob vivió en Egipto diez y siete años, siendo los días de Jacob, los años de su vida, 147 años.
29 And when he saw that the day of his death drew nigh, he called his son Joseph, and said to him: If I have found favour in thy sight, put thy hand under my thigh; and thou shalt shew me this kindness and truth, not to bury me in Egypt:	29 Cuando los días de Israel tocaron a su fin, llamó a su hijo José y le dijo: «Si he hallado gracia a tus ojos, pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo y hazme este favor y lealtad: No me sepultes en Egipto.
30 But I will sleep with my fathers, end thou shalt take me away out of this land, and bury me in the burying place of my ancestors. And Joseph answered him: I will do what thou hast commanded.	30 Cuando yo me acueste con mis padres, me llevarás de Egipto y me sepultarás en el sepulcro de ellos.» Respondió: «Yo haré según tu palabra.»
31 And he said: Swear then to me. And as he was swearing, Israel adored God, turning to the bed's head.	31 «Júramelo», dijo. Y José se lo juró. Entonces Israel se inclinó sobre la cabecera de su lecho.
