1 POI il Signore disse a Giosuè: Non temere, e non ispaventarti; prendi teco tutta la gente di guerra, e levati, e sali contro ad Ai; vedi, io ti ho dato nelle mani il re d’Ai, e il suo popolo, e la sua città, e il suo paese.	1 Then the Lord said to Joshua: “You should not fear, and you should not dread. Take with you the entire multitude of fighters, and rising up, ascend to the town of Ai. Behold, I have delivered into your hand its king and people, and the city and the land.
2 Or fa’ ad Ai, e al suo re, come tu hai fatto a Gerico, e al suo re; sol voi prenderete per voi le spoglie, e il bestiame di essa; metti degli agguati alla città, dalla parte di dietro di essa	2 And you shall do to the city of Ai, and to its king, just as you did to Jericho, and to its king. Yet truly, the spoils, and all the living things, you shall plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush against the city behind it.”
3 Giosuè adunque, e tutta la gente di guerra, si levò per salire contro ad Ai; e Giosuè scelse trentamila uomini, valenti e prodi, e li mandò innanzi di notte.	3 And Joshua rose up, and the entire army of warriors with him, so that they might ascend against Ai. And he sent thirty thousand elect strong men in the night.
4 E comandò loro, dicendo: Vedete, state agli agguati contro alla città, dalla parte di dietro della città; non vi allontanate molto dalla città, e siate tutti presti.	4 And he instructed them, saying: “Set an ambush behind the city. You shall withdraw not far away, and let everyone be prepared.
5 Ed io, e tutto il popolo che resta meco, ci appresseremo alla città, e quando essi usciranno contro a noi, come la prima volta, noi fuggiremo davanti a loro	5 But I and the remainder of the multitude that is with me will approach from the opposite side of the city. And when they come out against us, we will flee and turn our backs, just as we did before,
6 ed essi usciranno dietro a noi, finchè noi li abbiamo tratti fuor della città; perciocchè diranno: Essi fuggono davanti a noi, come la prima volta; e noi fuggiremo davanti a loro.	6 until, pursuing us, they are drawn away from the city. For they will think that we are fleeing as before.
7 Allora levatevi dagli agguati, e occupate la città; perciocchè il Signore Iddio vostro ve la darà nelle mani.	7 Then, while we are fleeing and they are pursuing, you shall rise up from the ambush, and you shall lay waste to the city. And the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands.
8 E quando voi avrete presa la città, mettetevi il fuoco; fate secondo la parola del Signore; vedete, io ve l’ho comandato.	8 And when you have seized it, set it on fire. And you shall do all that I have ordered.”
9 Così Giosuè li mandò; ed essi andarono agli agguati, e si fermarono fra Betel ed Ai, dal ponente d’Ai; e Giosuè dimorò quella notte per mezzo il popolo.	9 And he sent them away, and they traveled to the place of the ambush, and they settled between Bethel and Ai, toward the western region of the city of Ai. But Joshua remained for that night in the midst of the people.
10 E la mattina levatosi a buon’ora, fece la rassegna del popolo; ed egli con gli Anziani d’Israele salì davanti al popolo, verso Ai.	10 And rising at first light, he reviewed his troops, and he went up, with the elders at the front of the army, surrounded by an auxiliary of fighters.
11 E tutta la gente di guerra ch’era con lui, salì, e si accostò, e giunse dirimpetto alla città, e pose campo dalla parte settentrionale d’Ai; e la valle era tra lui ed Ai.	11 And when they had arrived, and had ascended from the opposite side of the city, they stood toward the northern region of the city. And there was a valley in the middle, between them and the city.
12 Prese ancora intorno a cinquemila uomini, i quali egli pose in agguati tra Betel ed Ai, dal Ponente della città.	12 Now he had chosen five thousand men, and he had positioned them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, at the western part of the same city.
13 E, dopo che tutto il popolo fu disposto, cioè tutto il campo, ch’era dal Settentrione della città, e il suo agguato, ch’era dal Ponente di essa, Giosuè camminò quella notte per lo mezzo della valle.	13 Yet truly, all the remainder of the army was arranged in a line to the north, so that the very end of that multitude reached to the western region of the city. Then Joshua went out that night, and he stood in the middle of the valley.
14 E quando il re d’Ai ebbe ciò veduto, la gente della città si affrettò, e si levò a buon’ora. E il re, e tutto il suo popolo uscì alla campagna a punto preso ad incontrare Israele, per dargli battaglia; or egli non sapeva che vi erano degli agguati dietro alla città contro a lui.	14 And when the king of Ai had seen this, he hurried in the morning, and he went out with the entire army of the city. And he arranged them in a line opposite the desert, not knowing that an ambush lay hidden behind his back.
15 Allora Giosuè, e tutto Israele, fecero vista d’essere sconfitti da loro, e fuggirono, traendo al deserto.	15 Yet truly, Joshua, and all of Israel, withdrew from the place, pretending to be afraid, and fleeing along the way of the wilderness.
16 E tutto il popolo ch’era in Ai, fu adunato a grido, per perseguitarli. Così perseguitarono Giosuè, e furono tratti fuor della città.	16 And they pursued them, shouting together and encouraging one another. And when they had withdrawn from the city,
17 E non restò alcun uomo dentro ad Ai, nè dentro a Betel, che non uscisse dietro ad Israele; e lasciarono la città aperta, e perseguitarono Israele.	17 and indeed not one remained in the city of Ai and of Bethel who did not pursue after Israel, (leaving the towns open after they had rushed out,)
18 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: Leva lo stendardo che tu hai in mano, verso Ai; perciocchè io te la darò nelle mani. E Giosuè levò verso la città lo stendardo ch’egli avea in mano.	18 the Lord said to Joshua: “Lift up the shield that is in your hand, toward the city of Ai. For I will deliver it to you.”
19 E tosto, come egli ebbe stesa la mano, gli agguati si levarono dal lor luogo, e corsero, ed entrarono nella città, e la presero, e si affrettarono a mettervi il fuoco.	19 And when he had lifted up the shield toward the city, the ambush, which lay hidden, rose up quickly. And advancing to the city, they seized it, and set it on fire.
20 E gli uomini d’Ai, rivoltisi indietro, riguardarono; ed ecco, il fumo della città saliva al cielo, e non ebbero spazio per fuggir nè qua nè là; e il popolo che fuggiva verso il deserto si rivoltò contro a quelli che lo perseguitavano.	20 Now the men of the city who were pursuing Joshua, looking back and seeing the smoke of the city rising up even to heaven, were no longer able to flee in one direction or another, especially since those who had pretended to flee, and who were heading toward the wilderness, had turned back very strongly against those who were pursuing them.
21 Giosuè adunque, e tutto Israele, veggendo che gli agguati aveano presa la città, e che il fumo di essa saliva, voltarono faccia, e percossero la gente d’Ai.	21 And Joshua, and all of Israel, seeing that the city had been captured, and that the smoke of the city was ascending, returned and struck down the men of Ai.
22 Quegli altri eziandio uscirono fuor della città incontro a loro; e così furono rinchiusi in mezzo d’Israele, essendo gli uni di qua, e gli altri di là; ed essi li sconfissero in modo, che non ne lasciarono alcuno di resto in vita	22 Then too, those who had seized and set the city on fire, departing from the city toward their own men, began to strike the enemies in the middle. Therefore, since the adversaries were cut off from both sides, none of so great a multitude was saved.
23 Presero ancora il re di Ai vivo, e lo menarono a Giosuè.	23 Also, they apprehended the king of the city of Ai, alive, and they brought him before Joshua.
24 E, dopo ch’Israele ebbe finito di uccidere tutti gli abitanti d’Ai nella campagna, nel deserto, dove li aveano perseguitati; e che tutti interamente furono abbattuti a fil di spada, tutto Israele se ne ritornò verso Ai, e la mise a fil di spada.	24 And so, after all were slain who had pursued Israel fleeing toward the wilderness, and after they fell by the sword in the same place, the sons of Israel returned and struck the city.
25 E tutti quelli che caddero morti in quel giorno, così uomini come donne, furono dodicimila persone ch’erano tutta la gente d’Ai.	25 Now there were twelve thousand persons who had fallen on the same day, from man even to woman, the entire city of Ai.
26 E Giosuè non ritrasse la sua mano, la quale egli avea stesa con lo stendardo, finchè non ebbe distrutti nel modo dell’interdetto tutti gli abitanti d’Ai.	26 Truly Joshua did not draw back his hand, which he had stretched out on high, keeping hold of the shield until all the inhabitants of Ai were put to death.
27 Gl’Israeliti predarono sol per loro il bestiame, e le spoglie di quella città, secondo ciò che il Signore avea comandato a Giosuè.	27 Then the sons of Israel divided among themselves the cattle and the plunder of the city, just as the Lord had instructed Joshua.
28 E Giosuè bruciò Ai, e la ridusse in un monte di ruine in perpetuo, come è infino al dì d’oggi.	28 And he set fire to the city, and he caused it to be a perpetual tomb.
29 Appiccò ancora ad un legno il re d’Ai, il qual vi rimase fino alla sera; ma in sul tramontar del sole, Giosuè comandò che il corpo morto di esso fosse messo giù dal legno; e fu gittato all’entrata della porta della città, e sopra esso fu alzato un gran monte di pietre, il qual dura fino a questo giorno	29 Also, he suspended the king on a gallows, until evening and the setting of the sun. And Joshua instructed, and they took down his dead body from the hanging tree. And they cast it at the very entrance of the city, gathering a great pile of stones upon it, which remains even to the present day.
30 ALLORA Giosuè edificò un altare al Signore Iddio d’Israele, nel monte di Ebal,	30 Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
31 secondo che Mosè, servitor del Signore, avea comandato a’ figliuoli d’Israele, come è scritto nel Libro della Legge di Mosè; un altare di pietre intiere, sopra le quali non avea fatto passar ferro; e i figliuoli d’Israele offersero sopra esso olocausti al Signore, e sacrificarono sacrificii da render grazie.	31 just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had instructed to the sons of Israel, and this was written in the book of the law of Moses: truly, an altar of uncut stones, which iron has not touched. And he offered holocausts upon it to the Lord, and he immolated victims as peace-offerings.
32 Scrisse ancora quivi, sopra delle pietre un transunto della Legge di Mosè; la quale egli avea scritta, per esser posta davanti a’ figliuoli d’Israele.	32 And he wrote on the stones, the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, which he had set in order before the sons of Israel.
33 E tutto Israele, e i suoi Anziani, e i suoi Ufficiali, Prefetti, e i suoi Giudici, stavano in piè di qua e di là dall’Arca, dirimpetto a’ sacerdoti Leviti, che portavano l’Arca del patto del Signore; tutti dico, così forestieri, come natii d’Israele; l’una metà stava dirimpetto al monte di Gherizim, e l’altra metà dirimpetto al monte di Ebal; come Mosè, servitor del Signore, avea comandato, per benedire il popolo d’Israele la prima volta.	33 Then all the people, and those greater by birth, and the commanders and judges were standing on both sides of the ark, in the sight of the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, with both the new arrival and the native born, one half part of them beside Mount Gerizim, and one half beside Mount Ebal, just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had instructed. And first, certainly, he blessed the people of Israel.
34 E, dopo questo, egli lesse tutte le parole della Legge, le benedizioni e le maledizioni, secondo tutto ciò ch’è scritto nel Libro della Legge.	34 After this, he read all the words of the blessing and the cursing, and all the things that were written in the book of the law.
35 Ei non vi fu parola alcuna, di tutto ciò che Mosè avea comandato, che Giosuè non leggesse davanti a tutta la raunanza d’Israele, eziandio delle donne, e de’ piccoli fanciulli, e de’ forestieri che andavano fra loro	35 He left nothing untouched out of those things that Moses had ordered, and he repeated everything before the entire multitude of Israel, with the women and the little ones, and the new arrivals who were staying among them.
