1 OR i figliuoli di Ruben, e i figliuoli di Gad, aveano del bestiame in grandissimo numero: laonde, veggendo che il paese di Iazer, e il paese di Galaad, era luogo da bestiame;	1 Now the Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. Noticing that the land of Jazer and of Gilead was grazing country,
2 vennero, e parlarono a Mosè, e al Sacerdote Eleazaro, e a’ Capi della raunanza, dicendo:	2 they came to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the princes of the community and said,
3 Atarot, e Dibon, e Iazer, e Nimra, e Hesbon, ed Eleale, e Sebam, e Nebo, e Beon,	3 "The region of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Baal-meon,
4 che è il paese che il Signore ha percosso davanti alla raunanza d’Israele, è un paese da bestiame, e i tuoi servitori hanno del bestiame.	4 which the LORD has laid low before the community of Israel, is grazing country. Now, since your servants have livestock,"
5 Poi dissero: Se abbiamo trovata grazia appo te, sia dato questo paese a possedere ai tuoi servitori, e non farci passare il Giordano.	5 they continued, "if we find favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as their property. Do not make us cross the Jordan."
6 Ma Mosè rispose a’ figliuoli di Gad, e a’ figliuoli di Ruben: Andrebbero i vostri fratelli alla guerra, e voi ve ne stareste qui?	6 But Moses answered the Gadites and Reubenites: "Are your kinsmen, then, to engage in war, while you remain here?
7 E perchè rendete voi fiacco il cuor de’ figliuoli d’Israele, per non passare al paese, che il Signore ha loro donato?	7 Why do you wish to discourage the Israelites from crossing to the land the LORD has given them?
8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando io li mandai da Cades-barnea, per vedere il paese.	8 That is just what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land.
9 Perciocchè essi salirono fino alla Valle di Escol, e, dopo ch’ebbero veduto il paese, renderono fiacco il cuor de’ figliuoli d’Israele, per non entrar nel paese che il Signore avea loro donato.	9 They went up to the Wadi Eshcol and reconnoitered the land, then so discouraged the Israelites that they would not enter the land the LORD had given them.
10 Laonde, l’ira del Signore si accese in quel giorno, ed egli giurò, dicendo:	10 At that time the wrath of the LORD flared up, and he swore,
11 Se gli uomini, che sono usciti fuor di Egitto, dall’età di vent’anni in su, veggono mai la terra, della quale io ho giurato ad Abrahamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe; conciossiachè non mi abbiano seguitato appieno;	11 'Because they have not followed me unreservedly, none of these men of twenty years or more who have come up from Egypt shall ever see this country I promised under oath to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,
12 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne, Chenizzeo, e Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun; perciocchè essi hanno seguitato il Signore appieno.	12 except the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun, who have followed the LORD unreservedly.'
13 E l’ira del Signore si accese contro a Israele; ed egli li ha fatti andar vagando per lo deserto, lo spazio di quarant’anni, finchè sia stata consumata tutta quella generazione, che avea fatto quel male nel cospetto del Signore.	13 So in his anger with the Israelites the LORD made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD had died out.
14 Ed ecco, voi siete sorti in luogo de’ vostri padri, schiatta d’uomini peccatori, per accrescere ancora l’ira del Signore contro a Israele.	14 And now here you are, a brood of sinners, rising up in your fathers' place to add still more to the LORD'S blazing wrath against the Israelites.
15 Perciocchè, se voi vi stornate di dietro a lui, egli seguiterà a lasciarlo nel deserto; e così farete perir tutto questo popolo	15 If you turn away from following him, he will make them stay still longer in the desert, and so you will bring about the ruin of this whole nation."
16 Ma essi si accostarono a lui, e dissero: Noi edificheremo qui delle mandre per lo nostro bestiame, e delle città per le nostre famiglie.	16 But they were insistent with him: "We wish only to build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our families;
17 Ma noi ci metteremo in ordine, pronti per andar davanti a’ figliuoli d’Israele, infino a tanto che li abbiamo condotti al luogo loro; e in questo mezzo le nostre famiglie dimoreranno nelle città forti, per tema degli abitanti del paese.	17 but we ourselves will march as troops in the van of the Israelites, until we have led them to their destination. Meanwhile our families can remain here in the fortified towns, safe from attack by the natives.
18 Noi non ritorneremo alle case nostre, finchè ciascuno de’ figliuoli d’Israele non sia entrato nella sua eredità.	18 We will not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage,
19 Perciocchè, quant’è a noi, noi non possederemo nulla con loro di là dal Giordano; essendoci la nostra eredità scaduta di qua dal Giordano, verso oriente.	19 and will not claim any heritage with them once we cross the Jordan, so long as we receive a heritage for ourselves on this eastern side of the Jordan."
20 E Mosè disse loro: Se voi fate questa cosa, e siete in ordine per andare alla guerra, davanti al Signore;	20 Moses said to them in reply: "If you keep your word to march as troops in the LORD'S vanguard
21 e qualunque di voi è atto alla guerra, passa il Giordano davanti al Signore, finchè egli abbia cacciati i suoi nemici dal suo cospetto;	21 and to cross the Jordan in full force before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out of his way
22 dopo che il paese sarà stato soggiogato al Signore, voi potrete ritornarvene, e sarete fuor di colpa appo il Signore, e appo Israele; e questo paese sarà vostro, per possederlo nel cospetto del Signore.	22 and the land is subdued before him, then you may return here, quit of every obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this region shall be your possession before the LORD.
23 Ma, se non fate così, ecco, voi avrete peccato contro al Signore; e sappiate che il vostro peccato vi ritroverà.	23 But if you do not do this, you will sin against the LORD, and you can be sure that you will not escape the consequences of your sin.
24 Edificatevi delle città per le vostre famiglie, e delle mandre per le vostre gregge, e fate ciò che vi è uscito della bocca.	24 Build the towns, then, for your families, and the folds for your flocks, but also fulfill your express promise."
25 E i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, risposero a Mosè, dicendo: I tuoi servitori faranno come il mio signore comanda.	25 The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do as you command, my lord.
26 I nostri piccoli fanciulli, le nostre mogli, le nostre gregge, e tutto il nostro bestiame dimoreranno colà nelle città di Galaad.	26 While our wives and children, our herds and other livestock remain in the towns of Gilead,
27 Ma quant’è a’ tuoi servitori chiunque sarà atto alla guerra passerà alla guerra, davanti al Signore, come dice il mio signore	27 all your servants will go across as armed troops to battle before the LORD, just as your lordship says."
28 E Mosè diede ordine intorno a loro al Sacerdote Eleazaro, e a Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, e a’ Capi delle nazioni paterne delle tribù de’ figliuoli d’Israele;	28 Moses, therefore, gave this order in their regard to the priest Eleazar, to Joshua, son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral tribes of the Israelites:
29 e disse loro: Se tutti coloro d’infra i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, che sono atti alla guerra, passano con voi il Giordano davanti al Signore, quando il paese vi sarà soggiogato, date loro a possedere il paese di Galaad.	29 "If all the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall give them Gilead as their property when the land has been subdued before you.
30 Ma, se non passano con voi in arme, abbiano la lor possessione fra voi nel paese di Canaan.	30 But if they will not go across with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall bring their wives and children and livestock across before you into Canaan, and they shall have their property with you in the land of Canaan."
31 E i figliuoli di Gad, e i figliuoli di Ruben, risposero, dicendo: Noi faremo interamente come il Signore ha detto ai tuoi servitori.	31 To this the Gadites and Reubenites replied, "We will do what the LORD has commanded us, your servants.
32 Noi passeremo in arme nel paese di Canaan, davanti al Signore; sol restici la possessione della nostra eredità di qua dal Giordano.	32 We ourselves will go across into the land of Canaan as troops before the LORD, but we will retain our hereditary property on this side of the Jordan."
33 Mosè adunque diede loro, a’ figliuoli di Gad, a’ figliuoli di Ruben, e alla metà della tribù di Manasse, figliuolo di Giuseppe, il regno di Sihon, re degli Amorrei, e il regno di Og, re di Basan, il paese diviso per le sue città, co’ lor confini, le città del paese d’ogni intorno.	33 So Moses gave them (the Gadites and Reubenites, as well as half the tribe of Manasseh, son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan,) the land with its towns and the districts that surrounded them.
34 E i figliuoli di Gad riedificarono Dibon, e Atarot, e Aroer;	34 The Gadites rebuilt the fortified towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 e Atrotsofan, e Iazer, e Iogbeha;	35 Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 e Betnimra, e Bet-haran, città forti, e fecero ancora delle mandre per le gregge.	36 Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, and they built sheepfolds.
37 E i figliuoli di Ruben riedificarono Hesbon, ed Eleale, e Chiriataim;	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 e Nebo, e Baal-meon, mutati i nomi, e Sibma; e posero altri nomi alle città che riedificarono.	38 Nebo, Baal-meon (names to be changed!), and Sibmah. These towns, which they rebuilt, they called by their old names.
39 E i figliuoli di Machir, figliuolo di Manasse, andarono in Galaad, e lo presero, e cacciarono gli Amorrei che vi erano.	39 The descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, invaded Gilead and captured it, driving out the Amorites who were there.
40 Mosè adunque diede Galaad a Machir, figliuolo di Manasse; ed egli abitò quivi.	40 (Moses gave Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and he settled there.)
41 Iair anch’egli, figliuolo di Manasse, andò, e prese le villate di quelli, e pose loro nome: Le villate di Iair.	41 Jair, a Manassehite clan, campaigned against the tent villages, captured them and called them Havvoth-jair.
42 Noba parimente andò, e prese Chenat, e le terre del suo territorio; e chiamò quella Noba, del suo nome	42 Nobah also campaigned against Kenath, captured it with its dependencies and called it Nobah after his own name.
