1 E MOLTO tempo appresso, la parola del Signore fu indirizzata ad Elia, nell’anno terzo, dicendo: Va’, mostrati ad Achab, ed io manderò della pioggia sopra il paese.	1 After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”
2 Elia dunque andò per mostrarsi ad Achab.	2 Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.
3 Or la fame era grave in Samaria. Ed Achab chiamò Abdia, ch’era suo mastro di casa or Abdia temeva grandemente il Signore;	3 And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.
4 e quando Izebel distruggeva i profeti del Signore, Abdia prese cento profeti, e li nascose, cinquanta in una spelonca, e cinquanta in un’altra, e li nudrì di pane e d’acqua;	4 For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.
5 ed Achab disse ad Abdia: Va’ per lo paese, a tutte le fonti dell’acque, ed a tutti i torrenti; forse troveremo dell’erba, e conserveremo in vita i cavalli ed i muli; e non lasceremo che il paese divenga deserto di bestie.	5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”
6 Spartirono adunque fra loro il paese, per andare attorno per esso; Achab andò per un cammino da parte, e Abdia per un altro cammino da parte.	6 And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 E mentre Abdia era per cammino, ecco, Elia gli venne incontro. E Abdia, riconosciutolo, si gittò in terra sopra la sua faccia, e disse: Sei tu desso, Elia, mio signore?	7 And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”
8 Ed egli gli rispose: Sì, sono. Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia.	8 And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
9 Ma egli disse: Qual peccato ho io commesso, che tu voglia dare il tuo servitore nelle mani di Achab, per farmi morire?	9 And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?
10 Come il Signore Iddio tuo vive, non v’è nazione, nè regno, dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti; ma è stato detto che tu non v’eri; anzi ha scongiurato il regno e la nazione, per sapere se niuno ti avea trovato.	10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.
11 E ora tu dici: Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia.	11 And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
12 Ed avverrà che, quando io sarò partito d’appresso a te, lo Spirito del Signore ti trasporterà in qualche luogo che io non saprò, e quando io sarò venuto ad Achab, per rapportargli questo, egli, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà; e pure il tuo servitore teme il Signore dalla sua giovanezza.	12 And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.
13 Non è egli stato dichiarato al mio signore ciò che io feci, quando Izebel uccideva i profeti del Signore? come io ne nascosi cento, cinquanta in una spelonca, e cinquanta in un’altra, e li nudrii di pane e d’acqua?	13 Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?
14 E ora tu dici: Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia; onde egli mi ucciderà.	14 And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”
15 Ma Elia disse: Come il Signore degli eserciti, al quale io ministro, vive, oggi io mi mostrerò ad Achab.	15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”
16 Abdia adunque andò ad incontrare Achab, e gli rapportò la cosa. Ed Achab andò ad incontrare Elia	16 Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 E come Achab ebbe veduto Elia, gli disse: Sei tu qui, tu, che conturbi Israele?	17 And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”
18 Ma egli disse: Io non ho conturbato Israele; anzi tu, e la casa di tuo padre, l’avete conturbato, avendo voi lasciati i comandamenti del Signore, ed essendo tu andato dietro a’ Baali.	18 And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.
19 Ma ora, manda a far adunare appresso di me, in sul monte Carmel, tutto Israele, insieme co’ quattrocencinquanta profeti di Baal, e i quattrocento profeti del bosco, che mangiano alla tavola d’Izebel.	19 Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”
20 E Achab mandò a tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, e adunò que’ profeti in sul monte Carmel	20 Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.
21 Allora Elia si accostò a tutto il popolo, e disse: Infino a quando zoppicherete de’ due lati? Se il Signore è Dio, seguitatelo; se altresì Baal è Dio, seguitate lui. Ma il popolo non gli rispose nulla.	21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.
22 Ed Elia disse al popolo: Io son restato solo profeta del Signore, ed i profeti di Baal sono quattrocencinquanta uomini.	22 And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
23 Or sienci dati due giovenchi, ed eleggansene essi uno, e taglinlo a pezzi, e ponganlo sopra delle legne, senza mettervi fuoco; io altresì appresterò l’altro giovenco, e lo porrò sopra delle legne, e non vi metterò fuoco.	23 Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
24 Poi invocate il nome de’ vostri dii; ed io invocherò il Nome del Signore. E quel dio che risponderà per fuoco, sia Iddio. E tutto il popolo rispose, e disse: Ben dici.	24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”
25 Ed Elia disse a’ profeti di Baal: Sceglietevi uno de’ giovenchi, e apprestatelo i primi; perciocchè voi siete in maggior numero; e invocate il nome de’ vostri dii, ma non vi mettete fuoco.	25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”
26 Essi adunque presero il giovenco ch’egli diede loro, e l’apprestarono; poi invocarono il nome di Baal, dalla mattina infino a mezzodì, dicendo: O Baal, rispondici. Ma non v’era nè voce, nè chi rispondesse; ed essi saltavano intorno all’altare che aveano fatto.	26 And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.
27 E in sul mezzodì Elia li beffava, e diceva: Gridate con gran voce, poichè egli è dio; perciocchè egli è in alcun ragionamento, o in procaccio di qualche cosa, o in viaggio; forse anche dorme, e si risveglierà.	27 And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”
28 Essi adunque gridavano con gran voce, e si facevano delle talgliature, secondo il lor costume, con coltelli, e con lancette, fino a spandersi il sangue addosso.	28 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.
29 E quando il mezzodì fu passato, ed essi ebbero profetizzato fino all’ora che si offerisce l’offerta, non essendovi nè voce, nè chi rispondesse, nè chi attendesse a ciò che facevano,	29 Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.
30 Elia disse a tutto il popolo: Accostatevi a me. E tutto il popolo si accostò a lui. Ed egli racconciò l’altare del Signore ch’era stato disfatto.	30 Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
31 Poi Elia prese dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figliuoli di Giacobbe, al quale il Signore avea detto: Il tuo nome sarà Israele.	31 And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 E di quelle pietre edificò un altare al Nome del Signore, e fece d’intorno all’altare un condotto della capacità d’intorno a due staia di semenza.	32 And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.
33 Poi ordinò le legne, e tagliò il giovenco a pezzi, e lo mise sopra le legne.	33 And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.
34 E disse: empiete quattro vasi d’acqua, e spandetela sopra l’olocausto, e sopra le legne. Poi disse: Fatelo la seconda volta. Ed essi lo fecero la seconda volta. Poi disse: Fatelo la terza volta. Ed essi lo fecero la terza volta;	34 And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.
35 talchè l’acqua andava intorno all’altare, ed anche empiè il condotto.	35 And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.
36 E in su l’ora che si offerisce l’offerta, il profeta Elia si accostò, e disse: Signore Iddio d’Abrahamo, d’Isacco, e d’Israele, conoscasi oggi che tu sei Dio in Israele, e che io son tuo servitore, e che per la tua parola io ho fatte tutte queste cose.	36 And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.
37 Rispondimi, Signore, rispondimi; acciocchè questo popolo conosca che tu, Signore, sei l’Iddio, e che tu hai rivolto il cuor loro indietro.	37 Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”
38 Allora cadde fuoco del Signore, e consumò l’olocausto, e le legne, e le pietre, e la polvere, e lambì l’acqua che era nel condotto.	38 Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.
39 E tutto il popolo, avendo ciò veduto, cadde sopra la sua faccia, e disse: Il Signore è l’Iddio, il Signore è l’Iddio.	39 And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”
40 Ed Elia disse loro: Prendete i profeti di Baal, non iscampine alcuno. Ed essi li presero. Ed Elia li fece scendere al torrente Chison, e quivi li scannò	40 And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.
41 Allora Elia disse ad Achab: Sali, mangia, e bevi; perciocchè, ecco il suon d’un romor di pioggia. Ed Achab salì per mangiare e per bere.	41 And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”
42 Ed Elia salì in su la sommità di Carmel; ed inchinatosi a terra, mise la faccia fra le ginocchia;	42 Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.
43 e disse al suo servitore: Deh! sali, e riguarda verso il mare. Ed egli salì, e riguardò, e disse: Ei non vi è nulla. Ed Elia disse: Ritornavi fino a sette volte.	43 And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”
44 Ed alla settima volta il servitore disse: Ecco, una piccola nuvola, come la palma della mano d’un uomo, sale dal mare. Ed Elia disse: Va’, di’ ad Achab: Metti i cavalli al carro, e scendi, chè la pioggia non ti arresti.	44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’ ”
45 Ed a poco a poco il cielo si oscurò di nuvoli e di vento, e vi fu una gran pioggia. E Achab montò sopra il suo carro, e se ne andò in Izreel.	45 And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.
46 E la mano del Signore fu sopra Elia; ed egli si cinse i lombi, e corse davanti ad Achab, fino all’entrata d’Izreel	46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
