EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Después dimos vuelta y nos pusimos en camino hacia el desierto, en dirección al Mar Rojo, como me lo había dicho el Señor. Durante muchos días estuvimos dando vueltas alrededor del macizo de Seír.	1 "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.
2 Hasta que por fin el Señor me dijo:	2 Finally the LORD said to me,
3 «Basta ya de dar vueltas alrededor de esta montaña. Ahora diríjanse hacia el norte.	3 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.
4 Comunica esta orden al pueblo: Ustedes van a pasar por la región de Seír, donde viven sus hermanos, los descendientes de Esaú, los cuales desconfían de ustedes. Pero atiendan bien:	4 Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful
5 No los provoquen, porque yo no les daré nada de su territorio, no siquiera el espacio que ocupa la huella de una pisada, ya que el macizo de Seír se lo he dado en posesión a Esaú.	5 not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.
6 Cómprenles con dinero el alimento que necesitan para comer, y páguenles también el agua que deban.	6 You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.
7 Porque el Señor, tu Dios, te ha bendecido en todas tus empresas, y te ha protegido mientras caminabas por este gran desierto. Ya hace cuarenta años que el Señor, tu Dios, está contigo y nunca te faltó nada».	7 The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'
8 Por la ruta de la Arabá, que viene de Elat y de Esión Guéber, bordeamos la región de Seír, donde viven nuestros hermanos, los descendientes de Esaú. Luego dimos vuelta y tomamos el camino del desierto de Moab.	8 "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.
9 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Tampoco ataques a Moab ni lo provoques a la guerra, porque no te daré ninguna fracción de su territorio, ya que la posesión de Ar se la he dado a los descendientes de Lot».	9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.
10 –Antiguamente habían estado allí los emíes, un pueblo fuerte, numeroso y de elevada estatura como los anaquitas.	10 (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;
11 Tanto ellos como los anaquitas eran tenidos por gigantes, pero los moabitas los llaman emíes.	11 like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.
12 En Seír, en cambio, primero estuvieron los hurritas; pero los descendientes de Esaú los desposeyeron y los exterminaron, instalándose en lugar de ellos, como lo hizo Israel con la tierra que el Señor le dio en posesión–.	12 In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)
13 «Y ahora, ordenó el Señor, reanuden la marcha y crucen el torrente Zéred».	13 Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.
14 Desde que salimos de Cades Barné hasta que cruzamos el torrente Zéred, transcurrieron treinta y ocho años: el tiempo suficiente para que muriera toda aquella generación de guerreros, como el Señor se lo había jurado.	14 Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.
15 Porque el Señor puso su mano sobre ellos, hasta hacerlos desaparecer por completo del campamento.	15 For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.
16 Cuando ya no quedó en medio del pueblo ninguno de aquellos guerreros –porque todos habían muerto–.	16 "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,
17 El Señor me habló en estos términos:	17 the LORD said to me,
18 «Ahora vas a pasar por Ar, que está en las fronteras de Moab.	18 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.
19 Y luego te vas a enfrentar con los amonitas. No los ataques ni los provoques, porque yo no te daré en posesión ninguna fracción de su territorio, ya que se lo he dado en posesión a los descendientes de Lot».	19 As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.
20 –También este era considerado un país de gigantes. En efecto, allí habitaron antiguamente los gigantes que los amonitas llaman zamzumíes.	20 (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,
21 Eran un pueblo fuerte, numeroso y de elevada estatura como los anaquitas; pero el Señor los destruyó por medio de los amonitas, que los desposeyeron y se establecieron en lugar de ellos.	21 a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.
22 Lo mismo había hecho con los descendientes de Esaú, que habitan en Seír, cuando por medio de ellos destruyó a los hurritas; de esta manera, aquellos desposeyeron a los hurritas y se establecieron en su lugar hasta el día de hoy.	22 He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.
23 En cuanto a los avitas, que habitaban en los poblados hasta Gaza, fueron exterminados por los caftoritas, provenientes de Caftor, los cuales se establecieron en lugar de ellos–.	23 So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)
24 Luego el Señor añadió: «Reanuden la marcha y crucen el torrente Arnón. Yo te entrego a Sijón, rey de Jesbón, el amorreo, con todo su país. Prepárate para iniciar la conquista y provócalo a la guerra.	24 "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.
25 A partir de este momento, haré que el pánico y el terror se apoderen de todos los pueblos que están bajo el cielo: el que oiga hablar de ti, temblará y se estremecerá de espanto».	25 This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'
26 Desde el desierto de Quedemot envié mensajeros a Sijón, rey de Jesbón, con la siguiente propuesta de paz:	26 "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:
27 «Déjame pasar por tu país. Iré por el camino, sin desviarme ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.	27 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.
28 Véndeme las provisiones necesarias para comer, y darme también a cambio de dinero, agua para beber. Te pido solamente que me dejes pasar.	28 For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,
29 Como ya me han dejado los descendientes de Esaú, que viven en Seír, y los moabitas de Ar. Así podré cruzar el Jordán y llegar a la tierra que nos da el Señor, nuestro Dios».	29 as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'
30 Pero Sijón, rey de Jesbón, se negó a dejarnos pasar por su territorio, porque el Señor, tu Dios, había ofuscado su espíritu y endurecido su corazón, a fin de ponerlo en tus manos, como lo está todavía hoy.	30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.
31 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «He decidido entregarte a Sijón con todo su país. Empieza la conquista apoderándose de su territorio».	31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'
32 Sijón nos salió al paso con todas sus tropas, dispuesto a librarnos batalla en Iasá.	32 So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;
33 Pero el Señor lo puso en nuestras manos y lo derrotamos, a él con sus hijos y todas sus tropas.	33 but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
34 Nos apoderamos de todas sus ciudades y las consagramos al exterminio, sacrificando a hombres, mujeres y niños, sin dejar ningún sobreviviente.	34 At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.
35 Nos reservamos como botín solamente el ganado y los despojos de las ciudades conquistadas.	35 Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.
36 Desde Aroer, en la ribera del Arnón –incluyendo la ciudad que está en el valle– hasta Galaad, no hubo para nosotros ninguna ciudad inexpugnable: el Señor. nuestro Dios, nos entregó todo.	36 From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.
37 Pero no te acercaste al país de los amonitas: toda la ribera del torrente laboc, las ciudades de la montaña y todos los lugares que el Señor, nuestro Dios, te había prohibido.	37 However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
