1 Luego los israelitas reanudaron la marcha y fueron a acampar en las estepas de Moab, el otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	1 Then the Israelites moved on and encamped in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.
2 Balac, hijo de Sipor, vio todo lo que los israelitas habían hecho a los amorreos,	2 Now Balak, son of Zippor, saw all that Israel did to the Amorites.
3 y los moabitas sintieron un gran temor a la vista de ese pueblo tan numeroso. Atemorizados por la presencia de los israelitas,	3 Indeed, Moab feared the Israelites greatly because of their numbers, and detested them.
4 los moabitas dijeron a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta turba va a devorarlo todo a nuestro alrededor como un buey devora la hierba del campo». Entonces Balac, hijo de Sipor, que era rey de Moab en aquel tiempo,	4 So Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Soon this horde will devour all the country around us as an ox devours the grass of the field." And Balak, Zippor's son, who was king of Moab at that time,
5 envió unos mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor –que vivía en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país de los descendientes de Amav– para que le hicieran esta invitación: «Un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra se ha establecido frente a mí.	5 sent messengers to Balaam, son of Beor, at Pethor on the Euphrates, in the land of the Amawites, summoning him with these words, "A people has come here from Egypt who now cover the face of the earth and are settling down opposite us!
6 Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo. Tal vez así podré derrotarlo y expulsarlo del país. Porque yo sé que el que tú bendices, queda bendecido, y el que maldices, queda maldecido».	6 Please come and curse this people for us; they are stronger than we are. We may then be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed and whoever you curse is cursed."
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián partieron, llevando la retribución para el adivino. Cuando se presentaron a Balaam y le transmitieron el mensaje de Balac,	7 Then the elders of Moab and of Midian left with the divination fee in hand and went to Balaam. When they had given him Balak's message,
8 Balaam les respondió: «Pasen aquí la noche, y yo les daré la respuesta que el Señor me inspire». Entonces los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.	8 he said to them in reply, "Stay here overnight, and I will give you whatever answer the LORD gives me." So the princes of Moab lodged with Balaam.
9 Pero Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «¿Quiénes son esos hombres que están contigo?».	9 Then God came to Balaam and said, "Who are these men visiting you?"
10 Balaam respondió a Dios: «Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab, me envió este mensaje:	10 Balaam answered God, "Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me the message:
11 «Aquí hay un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra. Por eso, ven a maldecírmelo. Tal vez así podré combatir contra él y expulsarlo».	11 'This people that came here from Egypt now cover the face of the earth. Please come and lay a curse on them for us; we may then be able to give them battle and drive them out.'"
12 Dios dijo a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque está bendecido».	12 But God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them and do not curse this people, for they are blessed."
13 A la mañana siguiente, Balaam se levantó y dijo a los jefes enviados por Balac: «Vuélvanse a su país, porque el Señor me prohíbe acompañarlos».	13 The next morning Balaam arose and told the princes of Balak, "Go back to your own country, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you."
14 Entonces los jefes de Moab partieron, y cuando estuvieron de regreso dijeron a Balac: «Balaam se niega a venir con nosotros».	14 So the princes of Moab went back to Balak with the report, "Balaam refused to come with us."
15 Entonces Balac envió otros jefes, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros.	15 Balak again sent princes, who were more numerous and more distinguished than the others.
16 Ellos se presentaron a Balaam y le dijeron: «Así habla Balac, hijo de Sipor: «Por favor, no te niegues a venir en mi ayuda.	16 On coming to Balaam they told him, "This is what Balak, son of Zippor, has to say: Please do not refuse to come to me.
17 Yo te colmaré de honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Te ruego que vengas y me maldigas a este pueblo».	17 I will reward you very handsomely and will do anything you ask of me. Please come and lay a curse on this people for me."
18 Pero Balaam respondió a los servidores de Balac: «Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de planta y oro, yo no podría transgredir, ni siguiera en lo más mínimo, una orden del Señor, mi Dios.	18 But Balaam replied to Balak's officials, "Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything, small or great, contrary to the command of the LORD, my God.
19 Con todo, quédense aquí también ustedes esta noche, y veré qué me dice el Señor esta vez».	19 But, you too shall stay here overnight, till I learn what else the LORD may tell me."
20 Durante la noche, Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «Si esta gente ha venido a buscarte, puedes ir con ellos. Pero no hagas nada fuera de lo que yo te ordene».	20 That night God came to Balaam and said to him, "If these men have come to summon you, you may go with them; yet only on the condition that you do exactly as I tell you."
21 Por la mañana, Balaam se levantó, ensilló su asna y partió junto con los jefes de Moab.	21 So the next morning when Balaam arose, he saddled his ass, and went off with the princes of Moab.
22 Pero su partida encendió la ira de Dios, y el Angel del Señor se interpuso en el camino para cerrarle el paso. Balaam iba montado en su asna y lo acompañaban dos muchachos.	22 But now the anger of God flared up at him for going, and the angel of the LORD stationed himself on the road to hinder him as he was riding along on his ass, accompanied by two of his servants.
23 Cuando el asna vio al Angel del Señor parado en el camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano, se apartó y se fue por el campo. Pero Balaam la castigó para hacerla volver al camino.	23 When the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing on the road with sword drawn, she turned off the road and went into the field, and Balaam had to beat her to bring her back on the road.
24 El Angel del Señor se paró entonces en un sendero angosto, que pasaba por los viñedos y estaba rodeado de los dos lados por un cerco.	24 Then the angel of the LORD took his stand in a narrow lane between vineyards with a stone wall on each side.
25 Al verlo, el asna se fue contra el cerco y apretó el pie de Balaam que la castigó nuevamente.	25 When the ass saw the angel of the LORD there, she shrank against the wall; and since she squeezed Balaam's leg against it, he beat her again.
26 Una vez más, el Angel del Señor se adelantó y fue a colocarse en un lugar tan estrecho, que imposible desviarse a la derecha o a la izquierda.	26 The angel of the LORD then went ahead, and stopped next in a passage so narrow that there was no room to move either to the right or to the left.
27 Cuando el asna lo vio, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam, y este, enfurecido, la golpeó con su bastón.	27 When the ass saw the angel of the LORD there, she cowered under Balaam. So, in anger, he again beat the ass with his stick.
28 Entonces el Señor abrió la boca del asna, y ella, dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué te hice para que me golpearas así tres veces?».	28 But now the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she asked Balaam, "What have I done to you that you should beat me these three times?"
29 «¡Te estás burlando de mí!, respondió Balaam. Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, te mataría ahora mismo».	29 "You have acted so willfully against me," said Balaam to the ass, "that if I but had a sword at hand, I would kill you here and now."
30 El asna le respondió: «¿Acaso yo no soy tu asna, la que siempre has montado hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acostumbro yo a tratarte de ese modo?». El respondió: «No».	30 But the ass said to Balaam, "Am I not your own beast, and have you not always ridden upon me until now? Have I been in the habit of treating you this way before?" "No," replied Balaam.
31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balaam, y este vio al Angel del Señor parado en la camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano; se inclinó y lo adoró con el rostro en tierra.	31 Then the LORD removed the veil from Balaam's eyes, so that he too saw the angel of the LORD standing on the road with sword drawn; and he fell on his knees and bowed to the ground.
32 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué le has pegado tres veces a tu asna? Era yo el que te cerraba el paso, porque tu viaje me disgusta.	32 But the angel of the LORD said to him, "Why have you beaten your ass these three times? It is I who have come armed to hinder you because this rash journey of yours is directly opposed to me.
33 Ella me vio y se apartó de mí tres veces. Hizo muy bien en apartarse, porque de los contrario yo te hubiera matado, mientras que a ella la hubiera dejado con vida».	33 When the ass saw me, she turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away from me, I would have killed you; her I would have spared."
34 Balaam dijo al Angel del Señor: «He pecado, porque no sabía que tú estabas apostado delante de mí en el camino. Si esto te desagrada, ahora mismo regreso».	34 Then Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, "I have sinned. Yet I did not know that you stood against me to oppose my journey. Since it has displeased you, I will go back home."
35 El Angel del Señor respondió a Balaam: «Ve con estos hombres, pero dirás solamente lo que yo te indique». Y Balaam se fue con los jefes que le había enviado Balac.	35 But the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, "Go with the men; but you may say only what I tell you." So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
36 Cuando Balac supo que Balaam estaba por llegar, fue a encontrarlo en Ar Moab, sobre la frontera del Arnón, en el límite de su territorio,	36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the boundary city Ir-Moab on the Arnon at the end of the Moabite territory.
37 y le dijo: «Yo te mandé a llamar urgentemente. ¿Por qué no querías venir? ¿Acaso no dispongo de medios para colmarte de honores?».	37 And he said to Balaam, "I sent an urgent summons to you! Why did you not come to me? Did you think I could not reward you?"
38 Entonces Balaam respondió a Balac: «Aquí me tienes. Pero, ¿qué puedo decir yo ahora? Sólo diré la palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca».	38 Balaam answered him, "Well, I have come to you after all. But what power have I to say anything? I can speak only what God puts in my mouth."
39 Luego Balaam se fue con Balac. Llegados a Quiriat Jusot,	39 Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
40 Balac inmoló vacas y ovejas y se las envió a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde pudo ver a una parte del pueblo.	40 Here Balak slaughtered oxen and sheep, and sent portions to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
	41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up on Bamoth-baal, and from there he saw some of the clans.
