EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Grandes e inenarrables son tus juicios, por eso, las almas ignorantes se extraviaron.	1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.
2 Porque cuando los impíos pensaban que podían oprimir a una nación santa, yacían encadenados en las tinieblas, prisioneros de una larga noche, encerrados bajo sus techos, excluidos de la providencia eterna.	2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.
3 Ellos pensaban mantenerse ocultos con sus pecados secretos, bajo el oscuro velo del olvido, pero fueron dispersados, presa de terrible espanto, y aterrorizados por fantasmas.	3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.
4 Porque el reducto que los protegía no los preservaba del miedo; ruidos estremecedores resonaban a su alrededor y se les aparecían espectros lúgubres, de rostro sombrío.	4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.
5 Ningún fuego tenía fuerza suficiente para alumbrar, ni el resplandor brillante de las estrellas lograba iluminar aquella horrible noche.	5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.
6 Solamente brillaba para ellos una masa de fuego que se encendía por sí misma, sembrando el terror, y una vez desaparecida aquella visión, quedaban aterrados y consideraban lo que habían visto peor de lo que era.	6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.
7 Los artificios de la magia resultaban ineficaces, y su pretendida ciencia quedaba vergonzosamente desmentida,	7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;
8 porque los que prometían liberar las almas enfermas de temores y sobresaltos, estaban, ellos mismos, enfermos de un temor ridículo.	8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.
9 Aunque nada terrorífico les infundiera temor, horrorizados por el paso de los bichos y el silbido de los reptiles,	9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;
10 se morían de miedo, y hasta rehusaban mirar el aire, del que nadie puede escapar.	10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!
11 Porque la maldad es cobarde y su propio testimonio la condena: acosada por la conciencia, imagina siempre lo peor.	11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.
12 El miedo, en efecto, no es sino el abandono de la ayuda que da la reflexión:	12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;
13 cuanto menos se cuenta con esa seguridad interior, tanto más grave se considera ignorar la causa del tormento.	13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.
14 Durante esa noche verdaderamente impotente, salida de las profundidades del Abismo impotente, sumergidos en un mismo sueño,	14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-
15 eran perseguidos a la vez por espectros monstruosos y paralizados por el desfallecimiento de su alma, porque un terror repentino e inesperado los había invadido.	15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.
16 Así, cualquiera que caía en ese estado quedaba prisionero, encerrado en esa prisión sin hierros.	16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.
17 Ya fuera labrador o pastor, o trabajara en lugares solitarios, al ser sorprendido, tenía que soportar la ineludible necesidad,	17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.
18 porque todos estaban atados por una misma cadena de tinieblas. El silbido del viento, el canto melodioso de los pájaros en la arboleda, el ruido cadencioso de las aguas en su impetuoso correr,	18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,
19 el violento estruendo de las rocas cayendo en avalanchas, la invisible carrera de animales encabritados, el rugido de las fieras más salvajes, el eco que retumba en los huecos de las montañas, todo los llenaba de terror y los paralizaba.	19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.
20 Porque el mundo entero estaba iluminado por una luz resplandeciente y se dedicaba libremente a sus trabajos;	20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;
21 solamente sobre ellos se extendía una pesada noche, imagen de las tinieblas que les estaban reservadas. Pero más que de las tinieblas, ellos sentían el peso de sí mismos.	21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
