2 para atacar el campamento de los judíos y derrotarlos sorpresivamente. La gente de la Ciudades a los guiaba.	2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.
3 Cuando Judas se enteró de esto, salió con sus soldados para derrotar al ejército real que estaba en Emaús,	3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,

5 Gorgias llegó de noche al campamento de Judas y al no encontrar a nadie, los estuvo buscando por las montañas, pensando que habían huido.	5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'
6 Al rayar el alba, Judas apareció en la llanura con tres mil hombres, pero estos no disponían de las armaduras ni de las espadas que hubieran deseado.	6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.
7 Ellos veían, en cambio, que el campamento de los paganos era poderoso y estaba bien fortificado, rodeado de la caballería y con hombres adiestrados para la guerra.	7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.
8 Judas dijo a sus hombres: «No teman a esa muchedumbre ni se asusten por sus ataques.	8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.
9 Recuerden cómo se salvaron nuestros padres en el Mar Rojo, cuando el Faraón los perseguía con un ejército.	9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.
10 Invoquemos ahora al Cielo para que tenga piedad de nosotros.	10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;
11 Así reconocerán todas las naciones que hay Alguien que libera y salva a Israel».	11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'
12 Los extranjeros alzaron los ojos y, al ver que los judíos venían contra ellos,	12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,
13 salieron del campamento a presentar batalla. Los hombres de Judas hicieron sonar la trompeta	13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet
14 y entraron en combate. Los paganos fueron derrotados y huyeron hacia la llanura,	14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain
15 y los que habían quedado rezagados cayeron al filo de la espada. Los demás fueron perseguidos hasta Gázara y hasta las llanuras de Idumea, Azoto y Iamnia. Los que murieron fueron alrededor de tres mil hombres.	15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.
16 Cuando Judas y su ejército dejaron de perseguirlos,	16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men
17 Judas dijo al pueblo: «No tengan avidez por el botín, porque nos espera otra batalla.	17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.
18 Gorgias y su ejército están cerca de nosotros en la montaña: hagan frente a nuestros enemigos y combatan contra ellos; después podrán apoderarse libremente del botín».	18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'
19 Apenas Judas terminó de hablar, se asomó por las montañas un destacamento enemigo.	19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.
20 Ellos vieron que los suyos habían huido y que el campamento había sido incendiado, porque el humo que se divisaba ponía de manifiesto lo que había sucedido.	20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-
21 Ante tal espectáculo se llenaron de espanto, y como vieron en la llanura al ejército de Judas, dispuesto a librar batalla.	21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,
22 huyeron todos al país de los filisteos.	22 they al fled into Philistine territory.
23 Judas volvió entonces al campamento para saquearlo, y recogieron gran cantidad de oro y plata, telas de púrpura violeta y de púrpura marina, y muchas otras riquezas.	23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.
24 De regreso cantaban y bendecían al Cielo: «Porque es bueno, porque es eterno su amor».	24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'
25 Israel obtuvo aquel día una gran victoria.	25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.
26 Los extranjeros que habían podido escapar se fueron a anunciar a Lisias todo lo que había sucedido.	26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.
27 Esta noticia lo dejó consternado y abatido, porque a Israel no le había sucedido lo que él deseaba y las cosas no habían salido como el rey se lo había ordenado.	27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.
28 Al año siguiente, Lisias reunió sesenta mil hombres elegidos y cinco mil jinetes para combatir contra los judíos.	28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.
29 Cuando llegaron a Idumea y acamparon en Betsur, Judas les salió al encuentro con diez mil hombres,	29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.
30 y al ver aquel poderoso ejército, hizo esta oración: «Bendito seas, Salvador de Israel, que aplastaste la soberbia del gigante por la mano de tu servidor David y entregaste el ejército de los filisteos en manos de Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, y de su escudero.	30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.
31 Entrega así este ejército en manos de tu pueblo Israel. Que ellos se sientan avergonzados de sus tropas y de su caballería.	31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.
32 Infúndeles miedo, quiebra la audacia que les da su fuerza y que se conmuevan por su derrota.	32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.
33 Derríbalos con la espada de los que te aman, para que te canten himnos de alabanza todos los que conocen tu Nombre».	33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'
34 Cuando se enfrentaron los dos ejércitos, cayeron en el combate unos cinco mil hombres de Lisias.	34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.
35 Al ver la derrota sufrida por sus tropas y la intrepidez de los soldados de Judas, que estaban resueltos a vivir o a morir heroicamente, Lisias volvió a Antioquía, donde reclutó mercenarios con la intención de regresar a Judea con fuerzas más numerosas.	35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.
36 Judas y sus hermanos dijeron: «Nuestros enemigos han sido aplastados; subamos a purificar el Santuario y a celebrar su dedicación».	36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'
37 Entonces se reunió todo el ejército y subieron al monte Sión.	37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.
38 Cuando vieron el Santuario desolado, el altar profanado, las puertas completamente quemadas, las malezas crecidas en los atrios como en un bosque o en la montaña, y las salas destruidas,	38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.
39 rasgaron sus vestiduras, hicieron un gran duelo, se cubrieron la cabeza con ceniza	39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.
40 y cayeron con el rostro en tierra. Luego, a una señal dada por las trompetas, alzaron sus gritos al cielo.	40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.
41 Judas ordenó a unos hombres que combatieran a los que estaban en la Ciudadela hasta terminar la purificación del Santuario.	41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.
42 Después eligió sacerdotes irreprochables, fieles a la Ley,	42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law
43 que purificaron el Santuario y llevaron las piedras contaminadas a un lugar impuro.	43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.

46 y depositaron sus piedras sobre la montaña del Templo, en un lugar conveniente, hasta que surgiera un profeta y resolviera lo que había que hacer con ellas.	46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.
47 Después recogieron piedras sin tallar, como lo prescribe la Ley, y erigieron un nuevo altar, igual que el anterior.	47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.
48 También repararon el Santuario y el interior del Templo, y consagraron los atrios.	48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.
49 Hicieron nuevos objetos sagrados y colocaron dentro del Templo el candelabro, el altar de los perfumes y la mesa.	49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.
50 Quemaron incienso sobre el altar, y encendieron las lámparas del candelabro que comenzaron a brillar en el Templo.	50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.
51 Además, pusieron los panes sobre la mesa, colgaron las cortinas y concluyeron la obra que habían emprendido.	51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.
52 El día veinticinco del noveno mes, llamado Quisleu, del año ciento cuarenta y ocho, se levantaron al despuntar el alba	52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn
53 y ofrecieron un sacrificio conforme a la Ley, sobre el nuevo altar de los holocaustos que habían erigido.	53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.
54 Este fue dedicado con cantos, cítaras, arpas y címbalos, justamente en el mismo mes y en el mismo día en que los paganos lo habían profanado.	54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.
55 Todo el pueblo cayó con el rostro en tierra y adoraron y bendijeron al Cielo que les había dado la victoria.	55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.
56 Durante ocho días celebraron la dedicación del altar, ofreciendo con alegría holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión y de acción de gracias.	56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.
57 Adornaron la fachada del Templo con coronas de oro y pequeños escudos, restauraron las entradas y las salas, y les pusieron puertas.	57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.
58 En todo el pueblo reinó una inmensa alegría, y así quedó borrado el ultraje infligido por los paganos.	58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.
59 Judas, de acuerdo con sus hermanos y con toda la asamblea de Israel, determinó que cada año, a su debido tiempo y durante ocho días a contar del veinticinco del mes de Quisleu, se celebrara con júbilo y regocijo el aniversario de la dedicación del altar.	59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.
60 En aquel tiempo, levantaron alrededor del monte Sión altas murallas y torres poderosas, para que los extranjeros no vinieran otra vez y lo pisotearan como lo habían hecho antes.	60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.
61 Además, Judas puso en él una guarnición para que lo defendiera, y fortificó a Betsur, a fin de que el pueblo tuviera una fortaleza frente a Idumea.	61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.
