1 Macabeos 3

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 El sucesor de Matatías fue su hijo Judas, llamado Macabeo.	1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
2 Todos sus hermanos y los que habían seguido a su padre le prestaron apoyo y combatieron con entusiasmo por Israel.	2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.
3 El extendió la gloria de su pueblo y se revistió de la coraza como un héroe; se ciñó sus armas de guerra y libró batallas, protegiendo al ejército con su espada.	3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
4 Fue como un león por sus hazañas, como un cachorro que ruge ante su presa.	4 In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.
5 Persiguió implacablemente a los impíos y entregó a las llamas a los perturbadores de su pueblo.	5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.
6 Los impíos se acobardaron ante él, temblaron todos los que hacían el mal, y gracias a él se logró la salvación.	6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.
7 Puso en aprieto a muchos reyes, alegó a Jacob con sus proezas, y su memoria será eternamente bendecida.	7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.
8 Recorrió las ciudades de Judá, exterminó de ellas a los impíos y apartó de Israel la ira de Dios.	8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
9 Su fama llegó hasta los confines de la tierra, y congregó a los que estaban a punto de perecer.	9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
10 Apolonio reunió muchos paganos y un numeroso contingente de Samaría para hacer la guerra contra Israel.	10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.
11 Al enterarse de esto, Judas salió a su encuentro, lo derrotó y lo mató. Muchos sucumbieron y los demás se dieron a la fuga.	11 Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.
12 Cuando recogieron el botín, Judas se quedó con la espada de Apolonio, y desde entonces siempre combatió con ella.	12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.
13 Serón, el capitán del ejército de Siria, al saber que Judas había agrupado alrededor de él un contingente de hombres adictos y dispuestos a combatir,	13 Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
14 pensó: «Voy a hacerme famoso y a cubrirme de gloria en todo el reino, atacando a Judas y a sus secuaces, que intentan despreciar la orden del rey».	14 He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.
15 Entonces reanudó la lucha y con él subió un poderoso ejército de impíos para ayudarlo a vengarse de los israelitas.	15 So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.
16 Cuando se acercó a la subida de Betjorón, Judas le salió al encuentro con unos pocos hombres.	16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:
17 Estos, al ver el ejército que se les venía encima, dijeron a Judas: «¿Cómo, siendo tan pocos, podremos combatir con una multitud tan poderosa? Además, estamos extenuados porque hoy no hemos comido nada en todo el día».	17 Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?
18 Judas les respondió: «Es fácil que una multitud caiga en manos de unos pocos, y al Cielo le da lo mismo salvar con muchos que con pocos.	18 Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:
19 Porque la victoria en el combate no depende de la cantidad de las tropas, sino de la fuerza que viene del Cielo.	19 For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.
20 Ellos nos atacan, llenos de insolencia y de impiedad, para exterminarnos a nosotros, a nuestras mujeres y a nuestros hijos y para apoderarse de nuestros despojos.	20 They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:
21 Nosotros, en cambio, luchamos por nuestra vida y por nuestras costumbres.	21 But we fight for our lives and our laws.
22 El Cielo los aplastará delante de nosotros: ¡no les tengan miedo!».	22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
23 Apenas terminó de hablar, se lanzó sorpresivamente sobre el enemigo, y Serón fue aplastado con todo su ejército.	23 Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.
24 Después lo persiguieron por la pendiente de Betjorón hasta la llanura: allí murieron unos ochocientos hombres, y los demás huyeron al país de los filisteos.	24 And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
25 Así Judas y sus hermanos comenzaron a ser temidos, y el pánico se extendió por las naciones vecinas.	25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:
26 Su fama llegó a oídos del rey, y por todas partes se comentaban las batallas de Judas.	26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.
27 Al enterarse de esto, el rey Antíoco se enfureció y mandó reunir todas las fuerzas de su reino, un ejército poderosísimo.	27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.
28 Abrió su tesoro y pagó a las tropas el sueldo de un año, ordenándoles que estuvieran preparadas para cualquier eventualidad.	28 He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.
29 Entonces advirtió que se le había acabado el dinero del tesoro y que los tributos de la región eran escasos, debido a las disensiones y calamidades que él había provocado en el país, al suprimir las costumbres vigentes desde tiempo inmemorial.	29 Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;
30 Por eso temió que no le alcanzara, como otras veces, para los gastos y los regalos que antes solía hacer espléndidamente, superando a los reyes que lo habían precedido.	30 He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.
31 Sumamente preocupado a causa de esto, resolvió ir a Persia para recoger los tributos de aquellas provincias y reunir así mucho dinero.	31 Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.
32 Mientras tanto, dejó a cargo del gobierno, desde el río Eufrates hasta la frontera de Egipto, a Lisias, miembro de la nobleza y de estirpe real.	32 So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:
33 Le confió la educación de su hijo Antíoco hasta su vuelta	33 And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.
34 y puso a su disposición la mitad de sus tropas y los elefantes, ordenándole todo lo que debía hacer, especialmente lo relativo a los habitantes de Judea y de Jerusalén:	34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:
35 él debía enviar un ejército para destruir y aplastar la fuerza de Israel, y lo que aún quedaba de Jerusalén hasta borrar de su recuerdo.	35 To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;
36 Luego debía establecer extranjeros en todo su territorio y repartir entre ellos sus tierras.	36 And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.
37 El rey, por su parte, tomó consigo la otra mitad del ejército y partió de Antioquía, capital de su reino, el año ciento cuarenta y siete. Después de atravesar el río Eufrates, recorrió a las provincias de la meseta.	37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.
38 Lisias eligió a Tolomeo, hijo de Dorimeno, a Nicanor y a Gorgias, personas influyentes entre los amigos del rey,	38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:
39 y los envió con cuarenta mil soldados y siete mil jinetes, para que invadieran el territorio de Judá y lo arrasaran, como lo había ordenado el rey.	39 And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.
40 Ellos partieron con todo su ejército y acamparon cerca de Emaús, en la llanura.	40 So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.
41 Al enterarse de su llegada, los mercaderes de la región se presentaron en el campamento con mucha plata y oro, y provistos también de cadenas para llevar como esclavos a los israelitas. A ellos se sumó un contingente de Siria y del país de los filisteos.	41 And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.
42 Judas y sus hermanos vieron que se habían agravado los males y que el ejército estaba acampado dentro de su territorio. También se enteraron de la consigna real de destruir al pueblo hasta aniquilarlo.	42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;
43 Entonces se dijeron unos a otros: «Libremos a nuestro pueblo de la ruina y luchemos por él y por el Santuario».	43 They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.
44 Luego se convocó a la asamblea para prepararse a combatir, para orar y pedir piedad y misericordia.	44 Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.
45 Jerusalén estaba deshabitada como un desierto, ninguno de sus hijos entraba ni salía. El Santuario había sido pisoteado. los extranjeros ocupaban la Ciudad es la, convertida en albergue de los paganos. Había desaparecido la alegría de Jacob, y ya no se oía la flauta ni la cítara.	45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.
46 Una vez reunidos, fueron a Mispá, frente a Jerusalén, porque antiguamente Israel había tenido allí un lugar de oración.	46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.
47 Aquel día ayunaron, se vistieron con un sayal, esparcieron ceniza sobre sus cabezas y rasgaron sus vestiduras.	47 Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,
48 Abrieron el libro de la Ley para descubrir en él lo que los paganos consultaban a sus ídolos.	48 And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.
49 Trajeron las vestiduras sacerdotales, las primicias y los diezmos, hicieron comparecer a los nazireos que habían cumplido el tiempo de su voto,	49 They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.
50 y levantaron su voz hacia el Cielo, diciendo: «¿Qué haremos con estos? ¿A donde los llevaremos?	50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?
51 Tu Santuario ha sido pisoteado y profanado, tus sacerdotes están de duelo y humillados,	51 For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.
52 y ahí están los paganos, aliados contra nosotros para exterminarnos. Tú conoces lo que traman contra nosotros.	52 And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
53 ¿Cómo podremos hacerles frente, si tú no vienes en nuestra ayuda?».	53 How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
54 Luego, hicieron sonar las trompetas y lanzaron grandes alaridos.	54 Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
55 Inmediatamente, Judas puso oficiales al frente del ejército: jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez mil hombres.	55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.
56 A los que estaban construyendo su casa, a los que acababan de casarse o de plantar una viña y a los que tenían miedo, les ordenó que volvieran cada uno a su casa, conforme a la Ley.	56 But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
57 Luego avanzó con el ejército y acampó al sur de Emaús. Judas les dijo:	57 So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.
58 «Cíñanse las armas, compórtense valerosamente y estén preparados mañana al amanecer para atacar a los paganos que se han aliado contra nosotros a fin de destruirnos y destruir nuestro Santuario.	58 And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:
59 Porque es preferible para nosotros morir en el combate que ver las desgracias de nuestra nación y del Santuario.	59 For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.
60 ¡Se cumplirá lo que el Cielo disponga!	60 Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
