EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Toda la comunidad de los israelitas partió del desierto de Sin y siguió avanzando por etapas, conforme a la orden del Señor. Cuando acamparon en Refidim, el pueblo no tenía agua para beber.	1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Entonces acusaron a Moisés y le dijeron: «Danos agua para que podamos beber». Moisés les respondió: «¿Por qué me acusan? ¿Por qué provocan al Señor?».	2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'
3 Pero el pueblo, torturado por la sed, protestó contra Moisés diciendo: «¿Para qué nos hiciste salir de Egipto? ¿Sólo para hacernos morir de sed, junto con nuestros hijos y nuestro ganado?».	3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'
4 Moisés pidió auxilio al Señor, diciendo: «¿Cómo tengo que comportarme con este pueblo, si falta poco para que me maten a pedradas?».	4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'
5 El Señor respondió a Moisés: «Pasa delante del pueblo, acompañado de algunos ancianos de Israel, y lleva en tu mano el bastón con que golpeaste las aguas del Nilo. Ve,	5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.
6 porque yo estaré delante de ti, allá sobre la roca, en Horeb. Tú golpearás la roca, y de ella brotará agua para que beba el pueblo». Así lo hizo Moisés, a la vista de los ancianos de Israel.	6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.
7 Aquel lugar recibió el nombre de Masá –que significa «Provocación»– y de Meribá –que significa «Querella»– a causa de la acusación de los israelitas, y porque ellos provocaron al Señor, diciendo: «¿El Señor está realmente entre nosotros, o no?».	7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'
8 Después vinieron los amalecitas y atacaron a Israel en Refidim.	8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.
9 Moisés dijo a Josué: «Elige a algunos de nuestros hombres y ve mañana a combatir contra Amalec. Yo estaré de pie sobre la cima del monte, teniendo en mi mano el bastón de Dios».	9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'
10 Josué hizo lo que le había dicho Moisés, y fue a combatir contra los amalecitas. Entretanto, Moisés, Aarón y Jur habían subido a la cima del monte.	10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .
11 Y mientras Moisés tenía los brazos levantados, vencía Israel; pero cuando los dejaba caer, prevalecía Amalec.	11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.
12 Como Moisés tenía los brazos muy cansados, ellos tomaron una piedra y la pusieron donde él estaba. Moisés se sentó sobre la piedra, mientras Aarón y Jur le sostenían los brazos, uno a cada lado. Así sus brazos se mantuvieron firmes hasta la puesta del sol.	12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,
13 De esa manera, Josué derrotó a Amalec y a sus tropas al fino de la espada.	13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.
14 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Escribe esto en un documento como memorial y grábalo en los oídos de Josué: «Yo borraré debajo del cielo el recuerdo de Amalec».	14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'
15 Luego Moisés edificó un altar, al que llamó «El Señor es mi estandarte».	15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi
16 y exclamó: «Porque una mano se alzó contra el trono del Señor, el Señor está en guerra contra Amalec de generación en generación».	16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'
