1 Entonces José se echó sobre el rostro de su padre, lo cubrió de lágrimas y lo besó.	1 Joseph threw himself on his father's face and wept over him as he kissed him.
2 Después dio a los médicos que estaban a su servicio la orden de embalsamar a su padre, y los médicos embalsamaron a Israel.	2 Then he ordered the physicians in his service to embalm his father. When they embalmed Israel,
3 Esto les llevó cuarenta días, porque ese es el tiempo que dura el embalsamamiento. Los egipcios estuvieron de duelo por él durante setenta días.	3 they spent forty days at it, for that is the full period of embalming; and the Egyptians mourned him for seventy days.
4 Una vez transcurrido ese período, José se dirigió a la corte del Faraón en estos términos: «Por favor, presenten al Faraón el siguiente pedido:	4 When that period of mourning was over, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's courtiers. "Please do me this favor," he said, "and convey to Pharaoh this request of mine.
5 En una oportunidad mi padre me dijo, obligándome bajo juramento: «Cuando yo muera, asegúrate de que me entierren en la tumba que me hice preparar en el país de Canaán. ¿Puedo ir a sepultar a mi padre y luego regresar?».	5 Since my father, at the point of death, made me promise on oath to bury him in the tomb that he had prepared for himself in the land of Canaan, may I go up there to bury my father and then come back?"
6 El Faraón respondió: «Ve a sepultar a tu padre, como él te lo hizo prometer bajo juramento».	6 Pharaoh replied, "Go and bury your father, as he made you promise on oath."
7 José partió entonces para ir a sepultar a su padre, y con él fueron todos los servidores del Faraón, los ancianos de su palacio y todos los ancianos de Egipto,	7 So Joseph left to bury his father; and with him went all of Pharaoh's officials who were senior members of his court and all the other dignitaries of Egypt,
8 lo mismo que la familia de José, sus hermanos y la familia de su padre. En la región de Gosen dejaron únicamente a los niños y el ganado.	8 as well as Joseph's whole household, his brothers, and his father's household; only their children and their flocks and herds were left in the region of Goshen.
9 También fueron con él carros de guerra y jinetes, de manera que se formó un cortejo imponente.	9 Chariots, too, and charioteers went up with him; it was a very large retinue.
10 Al llegar a Goren Haatad, que está al otro lado del Jordán, celebraron las exequias con gran solemnidad, y José estuvo de duelo por su padre durante siete días.	10 When they arrived at Goren-ha-atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they held there a very great and solemn memorial service; and Joseph observed seven days of mourning for his father.
11 Los cananeos, habitantes del país, al ver los funerales de Goren Haatad, dijeron: «Este es un funeral solemne de los egipcios». Por eso aquel lugar, que se encuentra al otro lado del Jordán, se llamó Abel Misraim.	11 When the Canaanites who inhabited the land saw the mourning at Goren-ha-atad, they said, "This is a solemn funeral the Egyptians are having." That is why the place was named Abel-mizraim. It is beyond the Jordan.
12 Los hijos de Jacob hicieron con él todo lo que les había mandado:	12 Thus Jacob's sons did for him as he had instructed them.
13 lo trasladaron a Canaán y lo sepultaron en el campo de Macpelá, frente a Mamré, el campo que Abraham había comprado a Efrón, el hitita, para tenerlo como sepulcro familiar.	13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, facing on Mamre, the field that Abraham had bought for a burial ground from Ephron the Hittite.
14 Y después de sepultar a su padre, José regresó a Egipto en compañía de sus hermanos y de todos los que habían ido a dar sepultura a su padre.	14 After Joseph had buried his father he returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all who had gone up with him for the burial of his father.
15 Al ver que su padre había muerto, los hermanos de José se dijeron: «¿Y si José nos guarda rencor y nos devuelve todo el mal que le hicimos?».	15 Now that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers became fearful and thought, "Suppose Joseph has been nursing a grudge against us and now plans to pay us back in full for all the wrong we did him!"
16 Por eso le enviaron este mensaje: «Antes de morir, tu padre dejó esta orden:	16 So they approached Joseph and said: "Before your father died, he gave us these instructions:
17 «Díganle a José: Perdona el crimen y el pecado de tus hermanos, que te hicieron tanto mal. Por eso, perdona el crimen de los servidores del Dios de tu padre». Al oír estas palabras, José se puso a llorar.	17 'You shall say to Joseph, Jacob begs you to forgive the criminal wrongdoing of your brothers, who treated you so cruelly.' Please, therefore, forgive the crime that we, the servants of your father's God, committed." When they spoke these words to him, Joseph broke into tears.
18 Luego sus hermanos fueron personalmente, se postraron ante él y le dijeron: «Aquí nos tienes: somos tus esclavos».	18 Then his brothers proceeded to fling themselves down before him and said, "Let us be your slaves!"
19 Pero José les respondió: «No tengan miedo. ¿Acaso yo puedo hacer las veces de Dios?	19 But Joseph replied to them: "Have no fear. Can I take the place of God?
20 El designio de Dios ha transformado en bien el mal que ustedes pensaron hacerme, a fin de cumplir lo que hoy se realiza: salvar la vida a un pueblo numeroso.	20 Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve his present end, the survival of many people.
21 Por eso, no teman. Yo velaré por ustedes y por las personas que están a su cargo». Y los reconfortó, hablándoles afectuosamente.	21 Therefore have no fear. I will provide for you and for your children." By thus speaking kindly to them, he reassured them.
22 José permaneció en Egipto junto con la familia de su padre, y vivió ciento diez años.	22 Joseph remained in Egypt, together with his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years.
23 Así pudo ver a los hijos de Efraím hasta la tercera generación; y los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, también nacieron sobre las rodillas de José.	23 He saw Ephraim's children to the third generation, and the children of Manasseh's son Machir were also born on Joseph's knees.
24 Finalmente, José dijo a sus hermanos: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios los visitará y los llevará de este país a la tierra que prometió con un juramento a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob».	24 Joseph said to his brothers: "I am about to die. God will surely take care of you and lead you out of this land to the land that he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."
25 Luego hizo prestar un juramento a los hijos de Israel, diciéndoles: «Cuando Dios los visite, lleven de aquí mis restos».	25 Then, putting the sons of Israel under oath, he continued, "When God thus takes care of you, you must bring my bones up with you from this place."
26 José murió a la edad de ciento diez años. Fue embalsamado y colocado en un sarcófago, en Egipto.	26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. He was embalmed and laid to rest in a coffin in Egypt.
