1 Dos años después, el Faraón tuvo un sueño: él estaba de pie junto al Nilo,	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 cuando de pronto subieron del río siete vacas hermosas y robustas, que se pusieron a pastar entre los juncos.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Detrás de ella subieron otras siete vacas feas y escuálidas, que se pararon al lado de las primeras;	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 y las vacas feas y escuálidas se comieron a las siete vacas hermosas y robustas. En seguida el Faraón se despertó.	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Luego volvió a dormirse y tuvo otro sueño: siete espigas grandes y lozanas salían de un mismo tallo.	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 Pero inmediatamente después brotaron otras siete espigas, delgadas y quemadas por el viento del este;	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 y las espigas delgadas devoraron a las siete espigas grandes y cargadas de granos. Cuando se despertó, el Faraón se dio cuenta de que había estado soñando.	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 A la mañana siguiente, el Faraón se sintió muy preocupado y mandó llamar a todos los magos y sabios de Egipto, para contarles sus sueños. Pero nadie se los pudo interpretar.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Entonces el copero mayor se dirigió al Faraón y le dijo: «Ahora reconozco mi negligencia.	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 En cierta oportunidad, el Faraón se irritó contra sus servidores, y me puso bajo custodia, junto con el panadero mayor, en la casa del capitán de guardias.	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 El y yo tuvimos un sueño en el transcurso de una misma noche, cada sueño con su propio significado.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Con nosotros estaba un joven hebreo, un servidor del capitán de guardias; nosotros le contamos nuestros sueños, y él los interpretó, dando a cada uno su explicación.	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 Y todo sucedió como él lo había interpretado: yo fui restituido a mi cargo, mientras que el otro fue ahorcado».	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 El Faraón mandó llamar a José, que sin pérdida de tiempo fue sacado de la prisión. Este se afeitó, se cambió de ropa y compareció ante el Faraón.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 El Faraón dijo a José: «He tenido un sueño que nadie puede interpretar. Pero me han informado que te basta oír un sueño para interpretarlo».	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 José respondió al Faraón: «No soy yo, sino Dios, el que dará al Faraón la respuesta conveniente».	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Entonces el Faraón dijo a José: «Soñé que estaba parado a orilla del Nilo,	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 y de pronto subían del río siete vacas robustas y hermosas, que se pusieron a pastar entre los juncos.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Detrás de ellas subieron otras siete vacas, escuálidas, de aspecto horrible y esqueléticas, como nunca había visto en todo el territorio de Egipto.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Y las vacas escuálidas y feas devoraron a las otras siete vacas robustas.	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Pero una vez que las comieron, nadie hubiera dicho que las tenían en su vientre, porque seguían tan horribles como antes. En seguida me desperté.	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 En el otro sueño, vi siete espigas hermosas y cargadas de granos, que brotaban de un mismo tallo.	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 Después de ellas brotaron otras siete espigas, marchitas, delgadas y quemadas por el viento del este,	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 que devoraron a las siete espigas hermosas. Yo he contado todo esto a los adivinos, pero ninguno me ha dado una explicación».	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 José dijo al Faraón: «El Faraón ha soñado una sola cosa, y así Dios le ha anunciado lo que está a punto de realizar.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Las siete vacas hermosas y las siete espigas lozanas representan siete años. Los dos sueños se tratan de lo mismo.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Y las siete vacas escuálidas y feas que subieron después de ellas son siete años, lo mismo que las siete espigas sin grano y quemadas por el viento del este. Estos serán siete años de hambre.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 Es como lo acabo de decir al Faraón: Dios ha querido mostrarle lo que está a punto de realizar.	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 En los próximos siete años habrá en todo Egipto una gran abundancia.	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 Pero inmediatamente después, sobrevendrán siete años de hambre, durante los cuales en Egipto no quedará ni el recuerdo de aquella abundancia, porque el hambre asolará al país.	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 Entonces nadie sabrá lo que es la abundancia, a causa del hambre, que será muy intensa.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 El hecho de que el Faraón haya tenido dos veces el mismo sueño, significa que este asunto ya está resuelto de parte de Dios y que él lo va a ejecutar de inmediato.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Por eso, es necesario que el Faraón busque un hombre prudente y sabio, y lo ponga al frente de todo Egipto.	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 Además, el Faraón deberá establecer inspectores en todo el país y exigir a los egipcios la quinta parte de las cosechas durante los siete años de abundancia.	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 Ellos reunirán los víveres que se cosechen en estos próximos siete años de prosperidad, y almacenarán el grano bajo la supervisión del Faraón, para tenerlo guardado en las ciudades.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 Así el país tendrá una reserva de alimentos para los siete años de hambre que vendrán sobre Egipto, y no morirá de inanición.	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 La respuesta agradó al Faraón y a todos sus servidores.	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 Por eso el Faraón les dijo a estos: «¿Podemos encontrar otro hombre que tenga en igual medida el espíritu de Dios?».	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Y dirigiéndose a José, le expresó: «Ya que Dios te ha hecho conocer todas estas cosas, no hay nadie que sea tan prudente y sabio como tú.	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 Por eso tú estarás al frente de mi palacio, y todo mi pueblo tendrá que acatar tus órdenes. Sólo por el trono real seré superior a ti».	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 Y el Faraón siguió diciendo a José: «Ahora mismo te pongo al frente de todo el territorio de Egipto».	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 En seguida se quitó el anillo de su mano y lo puso en la mano de José; lo hizo vestir con ropa de lino fino y le colgó al cuello una cadena de oro.	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 Luego lo hizo subir a la mejor carroza después de la suya, e iban gritando delante de él: «¡Atención!» Así le dio autoridad sobre todo Egipto.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 El Faraón dijo a José: «Yo soy el Faraón, pero nadie podrá mover una mano o un pie en todo el territorio de Egipto si tú no lo apruebas».	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 Luego impuso a José el nombre de Safnat Panéaj, y le dio por esposa a Asnat, la hija de Potifera, sacerdote de la ciudad de On. Y José fue a recorrer el país de Egipto.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Cuando se puso al servicio del Faraón, rey de Egipto, José tenía treinta años. José se alejó de la presencia del Faraón e hizo un recorrido por todo el territorio de Egipto.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 Durante los siete años de abundancia, la tierra produjo copiosamente,	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 y él reunió todos los víveres recogidos en esos siete años y los almacenó en las ciudades, depositando en cada una de las cosechas de los campos vecinos.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 De esa manera, José acumuló una enorme cantidad de cereales, tanto como la arena del mar, hasta tal punto que dejó de llevar un control, porque superaba toda medida.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Antes que comenzaran los años de hambre, José tuvo dos hijos, que le dio Asnat, la hija de Potifera, el sacerdote de On.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Al primero lo llamó Manasés, porque dijo: «Dios me ha hecho olvidar por completo mis penas y mi casa paterna».	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 Y al segundo le puso el nombre de Efraím, diciendo: «Dios me ha hecho fecundo en la tierra de mi aflicción».	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Entonces terminaron los años en que Egipto gozó de abundancia,	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 y comenzaron los siete años de hambre, como José lo había anticipado. En todos los países se sufría hambre, pero en Egipto había alimentos.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 Cuando también los egipcios y el pueblo sintieron hambre, y el pueblo pidió a gritos al Faraón que le diera de comer, este respondió: «Vayan a ver a José y hagan lo que él les diga».	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 Como el hambre se había extendido por todo el país, José abrió los graneros y distribuyó raciones a los egipcios, ya que el hambre se hacía cada vez más intensa.	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 Y de todas partes iban a Egipto a comprar cereales a José, porque el hambre asolaba toda la tierra.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
