EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Jacob alzó los ojos, y al ver que Esaú venía acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres, repartió a los niños entre Lía, Raquel y las dos esclavas.	1 And Jacob lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming, and with him four hundred men: and he divided the children of Lia, and of Rachel, and of the two handmaids:
2 Puso al frente a las esclavas con sus niños, luego a Lía y a sus hijos, y por último a Raquel y a José.	2 And he put both the handmaids and their children foremost: and Lia and her children in the second place: and Rachel and Joseph last.
3 Después se adelantó él personalmente, y antes de enfrentarse con su hermano, se postró en tierra siete veces.	3 And he went forward and bowed down with his face to the ground seven times until his brother came near.
4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro, lo estrechó entre sus brazos, y lo besó llorando.	4 Then Esau ran to meet his brother, and embraced him: and clasping him fast about the neck, and kissing him, wept.
5 Luego dirigió una mirada a su alrededor, y al ver a las mujeres y a los niños, preguntó: «¿Quiénes son estos que están contigo?». «Son los hijos que Dios ha concedido a tu servidor», respondió Jacob.	5 And lifting up his eyes, he saw the women and their children, and said: What mean these? And do they belong to thee? He answered: They are the children which God hath given to me thy servant.
6 Entonces se le acercaron las esclavas con sus hijos y se postraron ante él.	6 Then the handmaids and their children came near, and bowed themselves.
7 Inmediatamente vino Lía con sus hijos, y también se postraron. Por último se adelantaron José y Raquel, e hicieron lo mismo.	7 Lia also with her children came near, and bowed down in like manner, and last of all Joseph and Rachel bowed down.
8 Esaú preguntó: «¿Qué intentabas hacer con todo ese ganado que me salió al paso?». «Lograr que mi señor me diera la bienvenida», respondió Jacob.	8 And Esau said: What are the droves that I met? He answered: That I might find favor before my lord.
9 Pero Esaú añadió: «Ya tengo bastante, querido hermano. Quédate con lo que es tuyo».	9 But he said: I have plenty, my brother, keep what is thine for thyself.
10 «No, le dijo Jacob; si quieres hacerme un favor, acepta el regalo que te ofrezco, porque ver tu rostro ha sido lo mismo que ver el rostro de Dios, ya que me has recibido tan afectuosamente.	10 And Jacob said: Do not so I beseech thee, but if I have found favor in thy eyes, receive a little present at my hands: for I have seen thy face, as if I should have seen the countenance of God: be gracious to me,
11 Toma el obsequio que te ha sido presentado, porque Dios me ha favorecido y yo tengo todo lo necesario». Y ante tanta insistencia, Esaú aceptó.	11 And take the blessing, which I have brought thee, and which God hath given me, who giveth all things. He took it with much ado at his brother's earnest pressing him,
12 Después Esaú continuó diciendo: «Vámonos de aquí, y yo te serviré de escolta».	12 And said: Let us go on together, and I will accompany thee in thy journey.
13 Pero Jacob respondió: «Mi señor sabe que los niños son delicados. Además, las ovejas y las vacas han tenido cría, y yo debo velar por ellas. Bastará con exigirles un solo día de marcha forzada, para que muera todo el rebaño.	13 And Jacob said: My lord, thou knowest that I have with me tender children, and sheep, and kine with young: which if I should cause to be overdriven, in one day all the flocks will die.
14 Tú sigue adelante, mientras yo avanzo lentamente, al paso de la caravana que me va precediendo, y al paso de los niños. Luego te alcanzaré en Seír».	14 May it please my lord to go before his servant: and I will follow softly after him, as I shall see my children to be able, until I come to my lord in Seir.
15 Esaú dijo entonces: «Permíteme al menos que ponga a tu disposición una parte de los hombres que me acompañan». «¿Para qué?», respondió Jacob. «Basta que seas benévolo conmigo».	15 Esau answered: I beseech thee, that some of the people at least, who are with me, may stay to accompany thee in the way. And he said: There is no necessity: I want nothing else but only to find favor, my lord, in thy sight.
16 Aquel mismo día, Esaú emprendió el camino de regreso a Seír,	16 So Esau returned, that day, the way that he came, to Seir.
17 mientras que Jacob siguió avanzando hasta Sucot. Allí edificó una casa para él, y chozas para el ganado. Fue por eso que se dio a ese lugar el nombre de Sucot, que significa «Chozas».	17 And Jacob came to Socoth: where having built a house, and pitched tents, he called the name of the place Socoth, that is, Tents.
18 A su regreso de Padán Aram, Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, y acampó a la vista de la ciudad.	18 And he passed over to Salem, a city of the Sichemites, which is in the land of Chanaan, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria: and he dwelt by the town:
19 Después compró a los hijos de Jamor, el padre de Siquem, por cien monedas de plata, la parcela de campo donde había instalado su campamento.	19 And he bought that part of the field, in which he pitched his tents, of the children of Hemor, the father of Sichem for a hundred lambs.
20 Allí erigió un altar, al que llamó «Dios, Dios de Israel».	20 And raising an altar there, he invoked upon it the most mighty God of Israel.
