1 A la madrugada del día siguiente, Labán abrazó a sus nietos y a sus hijas, los bendijo, y regresó a su casa,	1 Likewise, Jacob continued on the journey that he had begun. And the Angels of God met him.
2 mientras que Jacob prosiguió su camino. De pronto, le salieron al paso unos ángeles de Dios.	2 When he had seen them, he said, “These are the Encampments of God.” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim, that is, ‘Encampments.’
3 Al verlos, Jacob exclamó: «Este es un campamento de Dios». Por eso dio a ese lugar el nombre de Majanaim.	3 Then he also sent messengers before him to his brother Esau, in the land of Seir, in the region of Edom.
4 Después Jacob envió unos mensajeros a su hermano Esaú –que vivía en la región de Seír, en las estepas de Edom–	4 And he instructed them, saying: “You shall speak in this way to my lord Esau: ‘Your brother Jacob says these things: “I have sojourned with Laban, and I have been with him until the present day.
5 dándoles esta orden: «Digan a mi señor Esaú: Así habla tu servidor Jacob: Fui a pasar un tiempo a la casa de Labán, y me quedé allí hasta ahora.	5 I have oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and men servants, and women servants. And now I send an ambassador to my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”
6 Poseo bueyes, asnos, ovejas, esclavos y esclavas. Mando a informar de esto a mi señor, con la esperanza de que me reciba amigablemente.	6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We went to your brother Esau, and behold, he rushes to meet you with four hundred men.”
7 Pero los mensajeros regresaron con esta noticia: «Fuimos a ver a tu hermano Esaú, y ahora viene a tu encuentro acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres».	7 Jacob was very afraid. And in his terror, he divided the people who were with him, likewise the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies,
8 Jacob sintió un gran temor y se llenó de angustia. Entonces dividió a la gente que lo acompañaba en dos grupos, y lo mismo hizo con las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos,	8 saying: “If Esau goes to one company, and strikes it, the other company, which is left behind, will be saved.”
9 porque pensó: «Si Esaú acomete, contra uno de los grupos y lo destruye, el otro quedará a salvo».	9 And Jacob said: “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me: ‘Return to your land, and to the place of your nativity, and I will do well for you.’
10 Después pronunció esta oración: «Dios de mi padre Abraham y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Señor, que me dijiste: «Regresa a tu tierra natal y seré bondadoso contigo»,	10 I am less than any of your compassions and your truth, which you have fulfilled to your servant. With my staff I crossed over this Jordan. And now I go back with two companies.
11 yo soy indigno de las gracias con que has favorecido constantemente a tu servidor. Porque cuando crucé el Jordán, no tenía nada más que mi bastón, y ahora he podido formar dos campamentos.	11 Rescue me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am very afraid of him, lest perhaps he may come and strike down the mother with the sons.
12 Te ruego que me libres de la amenaza de mi hermano Esaú, porque tengo miedo de que él venga y nos destruya, sin perdonar a nadie.	12 You did say that you would do well by me, and that you would expand my offspring like the sand of the sea, which, because of its multitude, cannot be numbered.”
13 Tú mismo has afirmado: «Yo seré bondadoso contigo y haré que tu descendencia sea una multitud incontable como la arena del mar».	13 And when he had slept there that night, he separated, from the things that he had, gifts for his brother Esau:
14 Después de pasar la noche en aquel lugar, Jacob tomó una parte de los bienes que tenía a mano, para enviarlos como obsequio a su hermano Esaú.	14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 Eran doscientas cabras y veinte chivos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,	15 thirty milking camels with their young, forty cows, and twenty bulls, twenty she-donkeys, and ten of their young.
16 treinta camellas con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez toros, veinte asnas y diez asnos.	16 And he sent them by the hands of his servants, each flock separately, and he said to his servants: “Pass before me, and let there be a space between flock and flock.”
17 Luego confió a sus servidores cada manada por separado, y les dijo: Sigan adelante, pero dejen un espacio libre entre una manada y la otra:.	17 And he instructed the first, saying: “If you happen to meet my brother Esau, and he questions you: “Whose are you?” or, “Where are you going?” or, “Whose are these which follow you?”
18 Y al que iba al frente le dio esta orden: «Cuando mi hermano Esaú te salga al paso y te pregunte: «¿Quién es tu patrón? ¿Adónde vas? ¿Y quién es el dueño de todo eso que está delante de ti?»,	18 you shall respond: “Your servant Jacob’s. He has sent them as a gift to my lord Esau. And he is also coming after us.”
19 tú le responderás: «Todo esto pertenece a tu servidor Jacob: es un regalo que él envía a mi señor Esaú. Detrás de nosotros viene él personalmente».	19 Similarly, he gave orders to the second, and the third, and to all who followed the flocks, saying: “Speak these same words to Esau, when you find him.
20 Jacob dio esa misma orden al segundo, y al tercero, y a todos los demás que iban detrás de las manadas diciéndoles: «Cuando se encuentren con mi hermano Esaú, díganle todo esto.	20 And you will add: ‘Your servant Jacob himself also follows after us, for he said: “I will appease him with the gifts that go ahead, and after this, I will see him; perhaps he will be gracious to me.” ’ ”
21 Y tengan cuidado de añadir: «Detrás de nosotros viene tu servidor Jacob personalmente». Porque pensaba: «Lo aplacaré con los regalos que me preceden y después me presentaré yo; tal vez así me reciba bien».	21 And so the gifts went before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
22 Y aquella noche Jacob permaneció en el campamento, mientras sus regalos iban delante de él.	22 And when he had arisen early, he took his two wives, and the same number of handmaids, with his eleven sons, and he crossed over the ford of Jabbok.
23 Aquella noche, Jacob se levantó, tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos sirvientas y a sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Iaboc.	23 And having delivered over all the things that belonged to him,
24 Después que los hizo cruzar el torrente, pasó también todas sus posesiones.	24 he remained alone. And behold, a man wrestled with him until morning.
25 Entonces se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta rayar el alba.	25 And when he saw that he would not be able to overcome him, he touched the nerve of his thigh, and immediately it withered.
26 Al ver que no podía dominar a Jacob, lo golpeó en la articulación del fémur, y el fémur de Jacob se dislocó mientras luchaban.	26 And he said to him, “Release me, for now the dawn ascends.” He responded, “I will not release you, unless you bless me.”
27 Luego dijo: «Déjame partir, porque ya está amaneciendo:. Pero Jacob replicó: «No te soltaré si antes no me bendices».	27 Therefore he said, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob.”
28 El otro le preguntó: «¿Cómo te llamas?», «Jacob», respondió.	28 But he said, “Your name will not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if you have been strong against God, how much more will you prevail against men?”
29 El añadió: «En adelante no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido».	29 Jacob questioned him, “Tell me, by what name are you called?” He responded, “Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him in the same place.
30 Jacob le rogó: «Por favor, dime tu nombre». Pero él respondió: «¿Cómo te atreves a preguntar mi nombre?». Y allí mismo lo bendijo.	30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.”
31 Jacob llamó a aquel lugar con el nombre de Peniel, porque dijo: «He visto a Dios cara a cara, y he salido con vida».	31 And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he had crossed beyond Peniel. Yet in truth, he limped on his foot.
32 Mientras atravesaba Peniel, el sol comenzó a brillar, y Jacob iba rengueando del muslo.	32 For this reason, the sons of Israel, even to the present day, do not eat the nerve that withered in Jacob’s thigh, because he touched the nerve of his thigh and it was obstructed.
33 Por eso los israelitas no comen hasta el presente el nervio ciático que está en la articulación del fémur, porque Jacob fue tocado en la articulación del fémur, en el nervio ciático.
