1 Judit les dijo: «Escuchadme, hermanos; tomad esta cabeza y colgadle en el saliente de nuestras murallas;	1 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me, my brothers. Take this head and hang it on the parapet of your wall.
2 y apenas despunte el alba y salga el sol sobre la tierra, empuñaréis cada uno vuestras armas y saldréis fuera de la ciudad todos los hombres capaces. Que se ponga uno al frente, como si intentarais bajar a la llanura, contra la avanzada de los asirios. Pero no bajéis.	2 At daybreak, when the sun rises on the earth, let each of you seize his weapons, and let all the able-bodied men rush out of the city under command of a captain, as if about to go down into the plain against the advance guard of the Assyrians, but without going down.
3 Los asirios tomarán sus armas y marcharán a su campamento para despertar a los jefes del ejército de Asiria. Correrán a la tienda de Holofernes, pero al no dar con él, quedarán aterrorizados y huirán ante vosotros.	3 They will seize their armor and hurry to their camp to awaken the generals of the Assyrian army. When they run to the tent of Holofernes and do not find him, panic will seize them, and they will flee before you.
4 Entonces, vosotros y todos los habitantes del territorio de Israel, saldréis en su persecución y los abatiréis en la retirada.	4 Then you and all the other inhabitants of the whole territory of Israel will pursue them and strike them down in their tracks.
5 «Pero antes, traed aquí a Ajior el ammonita, para que vea y reconozca al que despreciaba a la casa de Israel, al que le envió a nosotros como destinado a la muerte».	5 But before doing this, summon for me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and recognize the one who despised the house of Israel and sent him here to meet his death."
6 Hicieron, pues, venir a Ajior desde la casa de Ozías. Al llegar y ver que uno de los hombres de la asamblea del pueblo tenía en la mano la cabeza de Holofernes, cayó al suelo, desvanecido.	6 So they called Achior from the house of Uzziah. When he came and saw the head of Holofernes in the hand of one of the men in the assembly of the people, he fell forward in a faint.
7 Cuando le reanimaron, se echó a los pies de Judit, se postró ante ella y dijo: «¡Bendita seas en todas las tiendas de Judá y en todas las naciones que, cuando oigan pronunciar tu nombre, se sentirán turbadas!»	7 Then, after they lifted him up, he threw himself at the feet of Judith in homage, saying: "Blessed are you in every tent of Judah; and in every foreign nation, all who hear of you will be struck with terror.
8 «Y ahora, cuéntame lo que has hecho durante este tiempo». Judit le contó, en medio del pueblo, todo cuanto había hecho, desde que salió hasta el momento en que les estaba hablando.	8 But now, tell me all that you did during these days." So Judith told him, in the presence of the people, all that she had been doing from the day she left till the time she began speaking to them.
9 Cuando hubo acabado su relato, todo el pueblo lanzó grandes aclamaciones y en toda la ciudad resonaron los gritos de alegría.	9 When she finished her account, the people cheered loudly, and their city resounded with shouts of joy.
10 Ajior, por su parte, viendo todo cuanto había hecho el Dios de Israel, creyó en él firmemente, se hizo circuncidar y quedó anexionado para siempre a la casa de Israel.	10 Now Achior, seeing all that the God of Israel had done, believed firmly in him. He had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, and he has been united with the house of Israel to the present day.
11 Apenas despuntó el alba, colgaron de la muralla la cabeza de Holofernes, tomaron las armas todos los hombres de Israel y salieron, por grupos, hacia las subidas.	11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the wall. Then all the Israelite men took up their arms and went to the slopes of the mountain.
12 Al verlos los asirios, communicaron la novedad a sus oficiales, y éstos la fueron comunicando a sus estrategas y comandantes y a todos sus jefes,	12 When the Assyrians saw them, they notified their captains; these, in turn, went to the generals and division leaders and all their other commanders.
13 hasta llegar a la tienda de Holofernes. Dijeron, pues, a su intendente general: «Despierta a nuestro señor, porque esos esclavos tienen la osadía de bajar a combatir contra nosotros, para hacerse exterminar completamente».	13 They came to the tent of Holofernes and said to the one in charge of all his things, "Waken our master, for the slaves have dared come down to give us battle, to their utter destruction."
14 Entró, pues, Bagoas y dio palmadas ante la cortina de la tienda, porque suponía que Holofernes estaría durmiendo con Judit.	14 Bagoas went in, and knocked at the entry of the tent, presuming that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 Como nadie respondía, apartó la cortina, entró en el dormitorio, y lo encontró tendido sobre el umbral muerto y decapitado.	15 As no one answered, he parted the curtains, entered the bedroom, and found him lying on the floor, a headless corpse.
16 Dio entonces una gran voz, con gemido y llanto y fuertes alaridos, al tiempo que rasgaba sus vestiduras.	16 He broke into a loud clamor of weeping, groaning, and howling, and rent his garments.
17 Entró luego en la tienda en que se había aposentado Judit, y al no verla, se precipitó hacia la tropa gritando:	17 Then he entered the tent where Judith had her quarters; and, not finding her, he rushed out to the troops and cried:
18 «¡Esas esclavas eran unas pérfidas! Una sola mujer hebrea ha llenado de vergüenza la casa del rey Nabucodonosor. ¡Mirad a Holofernes, derribado en tierra y decapitado!»	18 "The slaves have duped us! A single Hebrew woman has brought disgrace on the house of King Nebuchadnezzar. Here is Holofernes headless on the ground!"
19 Cuando los jefes del ejército asirio oyeron estas palabras, su ánimo quedó turbado hasta el extremo, rasgaron sus túnicas y lanzaron grandes gritos y voces por todo el campamento.	19 When the commanders of the Assyrian army heard these words, they rent their tunics and were seized with consternation. Loud screaming and howling arose in the camp.
