1 Fue in quello tempo uno uomo fortissimo di Galaad, il quale avea nome Iefte, ed era oltimo combattitore, figliuolo d'una femina peccatrice, il quale nacque in Galaad.	1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son. Gilead was Jephthah's father,
2 Ed ebbe Galaad una moglie, della quale ebbe figliuoli (madernali e legittimi); quali poi che furono cresciuti, sì cacciarono Iefte, dicendo: tu non potrae esser erede nella casa del padre nostro, imperciò che tu se' nato d'una madre adultera.	2 but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'
3 I quali fuggendo lui, e schivandogli, sì se n' andò nella terra di Tob; (e andàronsene a lui), e raunaronsi uomini poveri (e malandrini) e rubatori; e sì lo seguitavano quasi come uno loro principe (e signore).	3 Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.
4 In quelli di sì combatterono i figliuoli di Ammon contro ai figliuoli d' Israel.	4 It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.
5 I quali fortemente (e aspramente) contrastando (ai figliuoli d' Israel), sì si mossono i maggiori (e più nobili) di Galaad, per pigliare in loro ausilio Iefte della terra di Tob.	5 And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.
6 E sì gli dissero: vieni, e sii nostro principe (e signore), e combatti contro ai figliuoli di Ammon.	6 'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'
7 Ai quali rispose Iefte: non siete voi coloro, che m'avete in odio, e cacciàstemi della casa del mio padre, e ora siete venuti a me perchè vi stringe la necessità (e il bisogno)?	7 Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house?Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'
8 E dissono gli principi di Galaad a Iefte: per questa cagione vegnamo ora a te, acciò che tu vegni con esso noi, e combatti contro ai figliuoli d' Ammon, e che sii (signore e) duca di tutti coloro i quali abitano in Galaad.	8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'
9 E rispuose loro Iefte: se con verità sete venuti a me, acciò che io combatti per voi contro ai figliuoli di Ammon, e Iddio gli metterà in le mie mani, io sarò poi vostro signore, o no?	9 Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'
10 Al quale risposeno: Iddio, che ode queste cose, sì sia interamente testimonio, che noi faremo quelle cose le quali promettiamo.	10 And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'
11 E sì andò Iefte dunque con li principi di Galaad; e tutto quanto il popolo il fece loro principe. E favellò Iefte tutte quante le sue parole e sermoni dinanzi Iddio Signore in Masfa.	11 So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.
12 E mandò li messi al re de' figliuoli d' Ammon, i quali si dicessero dalla parte della persona sua: che hai tu a fare meco, che tu se' venuto a me per guastare la terra mia?	12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'
13 Al quale rispose il re di Ammon: imperciò il fò io, conciosia cosa che tolse Israel la terra mia, quando venne giuso d'Egitto, da' confini d'Arnon infino in Iaboc e infino al (fiume) Giordano: adunque ora con pace sì la mi rendi.	13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'
14 Per quali messi un' altra volta mandò Iefte, e comandò loro che dicessero al re di Ammon:	14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites
15 Questo ti manda a dire Iefte: non tolse Israel la terra di Moab, nè la terra de' figliuoli di Ammon.	15 with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.
16 Ma quando iscesono d' Egitto, sì andò Israel per la solitudine (del deserto) infino al mare rosso, e venne in Cades.	16 When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and,having reached Kadesh,
17 E mandò i messi al re d' Edom [dicendo]: lasciami andare, ch' io passi per la terra tua. Il quale non volse consentire ai loro prieghi. E ancora mandò al re di Moab; il quale ancora si fece beffe di dare loro il passo. E istette Israel in Cades.	17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen. They sent similarly to the king of Moab, but he refused, and Israel remained atKadesh;
18 E sì attorniò dal lato della terra d' Edom e della terra di Moab; e venne verso (te, cioè verso) le parti d'oriente della terra di Moab, e pose il campo di là da Arnon; e non volse entrare (nè venire) nelli termini di Moab; imperciò che Arnon sì è ne' confini della terra di Moab.	18 later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory,the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.
19 E mandò il popolo d' Israel messi a Seon re degli Amorrei, il quale abitava in Esebon, e sì gli disse: lasciami, ch' io passi per la terra tua insino al fiume.	19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.
20 Il quale, ancora egli, dispregiando le parole de' figliuoli d' Israel, non lasciò passare il popolo d' Israel (per li confini e) per li suoi termini; ma raunata moltitudine infinita di gente, sì gli uscì incontro in Iasa, e fortemente gli contrastava.	20 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.
21 E miselo Iddio nelle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel con tutto l'oste suo; e possedettono tutta la terra dell' Amorreo abitatore di quella contrada,	21 Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.
22 e tutti quanti i termini suoi, di Arnon insino a Iaboc, e della solitudine (del deserto) insino al (fiume) Giordano.	22 Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.
23 Adunque Iddio Signore d'Israel cacciò a terra (e uccise) l' Amorreo, combattendo egli contro il popolo suo Israel; e tu ora vogli possedere (e pigliare) la terra [sua]?	23 And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?
24 Or quella terra, la quale possedette Camos, Iddio tuo Signore, ti conviene di ragione? E quella, che Iddio nostro Signore con vittoria prese, dee ve-nire in nostra (parte e) possessione;	24 Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!
25 (Quasi dica): se tu non se' forse migliore di Balac, figliuolo di Sefor, re di Moab; o vero che tu ci vogli insegnare, (come noi non sapessimo) ch' egli si turbò contro (ai figliuoli d') Israel, e avesse combattuto contro a lui,	25 Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel? Didhe make war on them?
26 quando abitò in Esebon e nelle ville sue, e in tutte quante le cittadi oltre al (fiume) Giordano, per ispazio di CCC anni. Perchè è già tanto tempo passato, e nulla cosa n' hai fatto dire, nè dimandare quello che ora attendi d' avere per forza?	26 When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?
27 Adunque sappi che la colpa non venne da me verso te; ma tu (ingiustamente) male fai contro a me, movendo battaglie non giuste. Giudichi questo Iddio, e sia arbitro in questo dì intra i figliuoli di Ammon e intra i figliuoli d' Israel.	27 I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '
28 E non volse consentire il re de' figliuoli di Ammon (nè lasciare) per le parole di Iefte, le quali gli avea mandate a dire per messi suoi.	28 But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.
29 E venne sopra Iefte lo Spirito d' Iddio (cioè lo Spirito santo), e andando intorno a Galaad (cercando) e a Manasse, e a Masfa ancora di Galaad, e quindi passando ai figliuoli d' Ammon,	29 The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.
30 fece voto, dicendo a Dio: Signore, se tu darai nelle mie mani i figliuoli di Ammon,	30 And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,
31 chiunque sarà quegli che prima sarà uscito dalle porte della casa mia, e verrammi incontro tornando con pace (e con vittoria) da' figliuoli di Ammon, sì l'offerirò in sacrifizio a Dio Signore.	31 the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'
32 E passò Iefte (oltre) ai figliuoli di Ammon per combattere contro a loro; i quali tutti Iddio gli mise nelle mani.	32 Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.
33 E prese della città di Aroer infino che vieni alla città di Mennit, che furono venti cittadi, e insino ad Abel, la quale sì è piena di vigne; e diede loro una grande sconfitta, di piaga grande (e di morti). E furono umiliati i figliuoli di Ammon da' figliuoli d' Israel.	33 He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.
34 E tornando Iefte in Masfa nella casa sua, sì gli venne incontro la sua unica figliuola cogli strumenti e colli cimballi; e non avea altro figliuolo nè figliuola.	34 As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.
35 La quale vedendo Iefte (che ella gli venia incontro), sì stracciò i suoi vestimenti, e disse: guai a me, figliuola mia; ecco che m' hai ingannato, e tu ancora sei ingannata: io sì (feci, e) aprii la bocca mia a Dio (facendo voto che la prima cosa, che uscisse dalle porte della casa mia e venissemi incontro, tornando io in pace e con vittoria, sì la offerieria a Dio in sacrifizio. E ora tu sei istata la prima), e non potrò fare altro (se non quello ch' io promisi).	35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'
36 Al quale rispuose la figliuola (e disse): padre mio, se tu apristi la tua bocca a Dio (facendo questo voto), fa ciò che tu hai promesso (a Dio), poi ch' egli t'ha fatto vendetta, e dato vittoria de' tuoi nimici.	36 She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'
37 E disse al padre: questo solamente mi dà, di ch' io ti priego: lasciami andare, acciò che due mesi io vada su per i monti, e pianga la mia virginità con le compagne mie (e con le mie cameriere).	37 She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'
38 Alla quale rispuose Iefte, (e disse): va. E lasciolla andare così due mesi. Ed essendo andata con le cameriere e con le compagne sue, sì piagnea la sua virginità su per li monti.	38 He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.
39 E compiuti i due mesi, sì tornò al padre suo; e fece di lei sì come avea fatto il voto. E mai non sapea che cosa si fosse stato uomo. E da quell'otta crescette l'usanza in Israel, e fue servata la (usanza del voto, e da quello tempo tolse in) consuetudine (in Israel, e fu servata),	39 When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin. And hence, the custom in Israel
40 che compiuto l'anno sempre mai si raunavano insieme le figliuole d' Israel, e piagnevano la figliuola di Iefte quattro dì.	40 for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.
