BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Come Balaam vide che a Dio piacesse ch' egli benedicesse Israel, non andò più dov'era andato prima ad auguriare, ma volse sè dinanzi al deserto.	1 Balaam then saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel. He did not go as before to seek omens butturned towards the desert.
2 E levando gli occhi al popolo d'Israel, videli con le loro tende, ciascheduno nella tribù (della gente) sua; e ripieno dello spirito di Dio,	2 Raising his eyes Balaam saw Israel settled tribe by tribe; the spirit of God came on him
3 incominciò a parlare, e disse: Balaam, figliuolo di Beor; disse l'uomo a cui otturato è l'occhio;	3 and he declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
4 disse lo uditore de sermoni di Dio, lo quale ha veduto la visione dell' Onnipotente, lo quale cade, e così sono aperti li occhii suoi:	4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receivesthe divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
5 Perciò che i tuoi tabernacoli sono belli, Iacob, e le tue tende, Israel!	5 How fair your tents are, Jacob, how fair your dwel ings, Israel,
6 Come sono le valli inarborate, e gli orti che sono presso ai fiumi, inacquati, e come i tabernacoli che puose Iddio, come i cedri che sono presso all'acqua!	6 like val eys that stretch afar, like gardens by the banks of a river, like aloes planted by Yahweh, likecedars beside the waters!
7 E isparge l'acqua colla secchia sua, e lo seme suo sarà in grande abbondanza. E sarà rapito per cagione di Agag il re suo, e saragli preso lo regno suo.	7 A hero arises from their stock, he reigns over countless peoples. His king is greater than Agag, andhis kingship held in honour.
8 Iddio lo menò d'Egitto, la cui fortezza è simile all'unicorno; la gente divorerà lo esercito Suo; l'ossa loro romperanno, e la carne foreranno con saette.	8 God has brought him out of Egypt, is like the wild ox's horns to him. He devours the corpses of hisenemies, breaking their bones, piercing them with his arrows.
9 Riposandosi dormirà come leone, e come leonessa, che (per paura) niuno sarà auso di suscitarla. Chi sarae colui che ti benedicerà, sarae benedetto; e chi ti maledicerà, nella maledizione sarà maledetto.	9 He has crouched, he has lain down, like a lion, like a lioness; who dare rouse him? Blessed be thosewho bless you, and accursed be those who curse you!
10 Adirossi Balac, e minacciando colle mani, disse: io ti feci venire a maledicere li miei nemici, della qual cosa hae fatto lo contrario; tre volte tu li hai benedetti.	10 Balak flew into a rage with Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to Balaam, 'I brought youto curse my enemies, and you have insisted on blessing them three times over!
11 Perciò tornati al luogo tuo. Io m' avea posto in core di onorarti grandemente; ma Iddio ti hae privato di questo onore.	11 So now go home as fast as your legs can carry you. I promised to load you with honours. Yahwehhimself has deprived you of them.'
12 Rispuose Balaam a Balac: non lo dissi io ai tuoi messi, che tu mi mandasti,	12 Balaam retorted to Balak, 'Did I not tel the messengers you sent me,
13 che se tu mi dessi tutte le tue case, piene d'oro e d'ariento, io non posso preterire il sermone del mio Signore Iddio, però ch' io non parlo alcuna cosa, in bene ovver in male, salvo quello parlare che il mio Signor Iddio m’ha detto?	13 "Even if Balak gave me his house ful of gold and silver I could not go against Yahweh's order anddo anything of my own accord, whether for good or il ; whatever Yahweh says is what I shal say"?
14 Nondimeno vieni al popolo mio; e io ti darò consiglio, che faccia lo popolo tuo a questo popolo nell'ultimo tempo.	14 Now that I am going back to my own folk, let me warn you what this people wil do to your people, indays to come.'
15 Incominciò a parlare, e ridisse un'altra volta: disse Balaam figliuolo di Beor; disse l'uomo a cui era iscurato l'occhio;	15 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
16 disse l'uditore de' sermoni di Dio, che cognobbe la dottrina dell' altissimo, e le visioni dell' Onnipotente vede, e cadendo hae aperto gli occhii:	16 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, of one who knows the knowledge of the MostHigh. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receives the divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
17 vederollo, ma non testè; vederollo, ma non appresso. Egli nascerà una stella di Iacob, e leverassi una virga d'Israel, e percoterà i duchi di Moab, e guasterà i duchi di Moab, e guasterà ogni figliuolo di Set.	17 I see him -- but not in the present. I perceive him -- but not close at hand: a star is emerging fromJacob, a sceptre is rising from Israel, to strike the brow of Moab, the skul s of al the children of Seth.
18 E sarà Idumea sua possessione: la eredità di Seir farà luogo a' suoi nemici: Israel adopererà fortemente.	18 Edom too wil be a conquered land, Seir too wil be a conquered land, when Israel exerts hisstrength,
19 Di lacob sarà chi signoreggi; e verranno meno le reliquie della città.	19 when Jacob tramples on his enemies and destroys the last survivors of Ar.
20 Vedendo Amalec, incominciò a parlare, e disse: principio è della gente Amalec, li cui confini si perderanno.	20 Balaam then looked at Amalek and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Amalek, the earliest of nations!But his posterity wil perish forever.
21 Vedendo Cineo, incominciò a parlare, e disse: robusta è la tua abitazione; ma se tu ponessi nella pietra lo tuo nido,	21 He then looked at the Kenites and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Your dwel ing was firm, Kain,your nest perched high in the rock.
22 e fossi eletto dalla gente di Cin, (e istessi), quanto potresti istare? Assur ti piglierà.	22 But the nest belongs to Beor; how long wil you be Asshur's captive?
23 E anco parlò più, e disse: oimè, chi sarà vincitore, quando Iddio farà queste cose?	23 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The Sea-people are gathering in the north,
24 Loro verranno con le navi da tre remi d'Italia, e vinceranno gli Assirii, guasteranno gli Ebrei, e all'ultimo loro periranno.	24 the vessels from the coasts of Kittim. They wil bear down on Asshur, bear down on Eber; he too willperish forever.
25 Levossi Balaam, e tornossi nel luogo suo; e Balac si tornò per quella via ch' era venuto.	25 Balaam then got up, left and went home, and Balak too went his way.
