1 E il predetto Simone, manifestatore della pecunia e della patria, diceva molto male di Onia, come se lui avesse istigato Eliodoro a dire queste cose, e anco lui fosse inventor di questi mali.	1 The Simon mentioned above as the informer about the funds against his own country, made false accusation that it was Onias who threatened Heliodorus and instigated the whole miserable affair.
2 Ed era auso di dire quello il quale era provisore della sua città, e difensore della sua gente, e zelatore della legge e di Dio, esser insidiatore del regno.	2 He dared to brand as a plotter against the government the man who was a benefactor of the city, a protector of his compatriots, and a zealous defender of the laws.
3 Ed essendo molto cresciute le inimicizie, intanto che per alcuni amici di Simone si facesse molti omicidii;	3 When Simon's hostility reached such a point that murders were being committed by one of his henchmen,
4 considerando Onia il pericolo della contenzione, e Appollonio impazzire, cioè il duca di Celesiria e di Fenicia, da esser cresciuta la malizia di Simone, se n' andò al re,	4 Onias saw that the opposition was serious and that Apollonius, son of Menestheus, the governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, was abetting Simon's wickedness.
5 non come accusatore de' cittadini, ma considerando la comune utilitade, appresso sè stesso, di tutta la moltitudine.	5 So he had recourse to the king, not as an accuser of his countrymen, but as a man looking to the general and particular good of all the people.
6 Però ch' egli vedea ch' era impossibile (di provvedere) sanza la providenza regale (e) dar pace alle cose, nè Simone poter cessare dalla pazzia sua.	6 He saw that, unless the king intervened, it would be impossible to have a peaceful government, and that Simon would not desist from his folly.
7 Ma dopo lo eccesso della vita di Seleuco, avendo ricevuto il regno Antioco, il qual si appellava Nobile, desiderava Iasone, fratello di Onia, il sommo sacerdozio	7 But Seleucus died, and when Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes succeeded him on the throne, Onias' brother Jason obtained the high priesthood by corrupt means:
8 dal detto re, promettendogli trecento sessanta talenti d'ariento, e delle altre rendite ottanta talenti.	8 in an interview, he promised the king three hundred and sixty talents of silver, as well as eighty talents from another source of income.
9 E oltre di questo li promettea altri centocinquanta, se li fosse concessa la podestà sopra il luogo dove si ammaestrava la gente nella sua legge e sopra il postribulo de' giovani, e di scrivere quelli Antiocheni li quali sono in Ierusalem.	9 Besides this he agreed to pay a hundred and fifty more, if he were given authority to establish a gymnasium and a youth club for it and to enroll men in Jerusalem as Antiochians.
10 E avendo il re consentito, e ottenuto il principato, subito comandò che quelli della tribù sua si transferisse al rito de' gentili.	10 When Jason received the king's approval and came into office, he immediately initiated his countrymen into the Greek way of life.
11 E ammote quelle cose le quali erano state ordinate dalli re ai Giudei per umanità, per lo mezzo di Giovanni padre di Eufolemo, lo qual fu ambasciatore alli Romani per concluder (unione e) l'amicizia e la compagnia loro, disfacendo le leggi legittime dei cittadini, ordinava prave leggi.	11 He set aside the royal concessions granted to the Jews through the mediation of John, father of Eupolemus (that Eupolemus who would later go on an embassy to the Romans to establish a treaty of friendship with them); he abrogated the lawful institutions and introduced customs contrary to the law.
12 Ed ebbe tanto ardire, ch' egli ordinò uno luogo sotto alla torre, e tutti gli ottimi degli belli giovani poner nel postribulo.	12 He quickly established a gymnasium at the very foot of the acropolis, where he induced the noblest young men to wear the Greek hat.
13 E questo non era principio, ma era uno augumento e uno profetto di una istrana conversazione de' gentili, per cagione della scelerità iscomunicata e inaudita di Iasone, empio, non sacerdote;	13 The craze for Hellenism and foreign customs reached such a pitch, through the outrageous wickedness of the ungodly pseudo-high-priest Jason,
14 per tal modo che sacerdoti già non erano solleciti circa l'ufficio dell' altare, ma disprezzato il tempio, e non si curando delli sacrificii, sollecitavano di esser partecipi (del combatter) della palestra, e della sua dazion ingiusta, e nelli esercizii delli giuochi da gittar le pietre in alto.	14 that the priests no longer cared about the service of the altar. Disdaining the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, they hastened, at the signal for the discus-throwing, to take part in the unlawful exercises on the athletic field.
15 Non avendo alcuna cosa delli onori della patria, pensavano le glorie greche esser ottime.	15 They despised what their ancestors had regarded as honors, while they highly prized what the Greeks esteemed as glory.
16 Per la qual cosa era tra loro una pericolosa contenzione, e seguitavano li loro instituti, e in tutto cercavano esser simili a coloro, i quali aveano avuto per nemici e distruttori.	16 Precisely because of this, they found themselves in serious trouble: the very people whose manner of life they emulated, and whom they desired to imitate in everything, became their enemies and oppressors.
17 Però che empiamente operare contro le leggi divine non passa sanza pena; ma questo il seguente tempo il dichiarerà.	17 It is no light matter to flout the laws of God, as the following period will show.
18 Conciosia cosa che ogni capo de' cinque anni. si facesse in Tiro uno giuoco ovver una contenzione, e il re fosse presente;	18 When the quinquennial games were held at Tyre in the presence of the king,
19 mandò Iasone, operatore di molti mali, di Ierusalem uomini peccatori (e malvagi), i quali portavano trecento dramme d'ariento alli sacrificii di Ercole, le quali dimandarono quelli che le portarono, acciò ch' elle non fussero date alli sacrificii, però che non bisognasse, ma esser deputate in altre spese.	19 the vile Jason sent envoys as representatives of the Antiochians of Jerusalem, to bring there three hundred silver drachmas for the sacrifice to Hercules. But the bearers themselves decided that the money should not be spent on a sacrifice, as that was not right, but should be used for some other purpose.
20 Ma queste furono offerte da colui che le mandava, nel sacrificio di Ercole; e per cagione di quelli ch' erano presenti furono date in fabbrica di navi, le quali hanno tre ordini di remi.	20 So the contribution destined by the sender for the sacrifice to Hercules was in fact applied, by those who brought it, to the construction of triremes.
21 E mandato in Egitto Apollonio, figliuolo di Mnesteo, per cagione delli principi di Tolomeo, amator della madre del re, avendo conosciuto Antioco esser fatto alieno dalle facende del regno, prendendo consiglio dalle proprie utilità, partito di quel luogo venne in Ioppen, e da Ioppen se ne venne in Ierusalem.	21 When Apollonius, son of Menestheus, was sent to Egypt for the coronation of King Philometor, Antiochus learned that the king was opposed to his policies; so he took measures for his own security.
22 E ricevuto magnificamente da Iasone e dalla cittade, entrò con molte flaccole accese e con molta laude; e di là rivolse lo esercito suo (e mandollo) in Fenicia.	22 After going to Joppa, he proceeded to Jerusalem. There he was received with great pomp by Jason and the people of the city, who escorted him with torchlights and acclamations; following this, he led his army into Phoenicia.
23 E dopo tre anni mandò Iasone Menelao, fratello del sopradetto Simone, il qual portava le pecunie del re, e avea in commissione di portar risposta delle faccende necessarie.	23 Three years later Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the aforementioned Simon, to deliver the money to the king, and to obtain decisions on some important matters.
24 E Menelao, avendosi raccomandato al re, dopo ch' egli ebbe magnificato la faccia della maiestate sua, rivolsesi (e accettò) il sommo sacerdozio in sè stesso, sopraponendo (e promettendoli) al tributo gli dava Iasone, talenti CCC di ariento.	24 When he had been introduced to the king, he flattered him with such an air of authority that he secured the high priesthood for himself, outbidding Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 E avuta la risposta dal re per comandamento, se ne venne, non avendo alcuna cosa degna. di sacerdozio, ma era di animo di crudele tiranno, e avea cuore di crudele bestia selvaggia.	25 He returned with the royal commission, but with nothing that made him worthy of the high priesthood; he had the temper of a cruel tyrant and the rage of a wild beast.
26 E Iasone, il quale avea cattivato il proprio fratello, essendo ingannato, fu iscacciato nella regione degli Ammaniti in esilio.	26 Then Jason, who had cheated his own brother and now saw himself cheated by another man, was driven out as a fugitive to the country of the Ammonites.
27 E Menelao certamente ottenne il principato; ma delle pecunie promesse al re non facea alcuna cosa, essendo esattore Sostrato, il quale era capitano della ròcca.	27 Although Menelaus had obtained the office, he did not make any payments of the money he had promised to the king,
28 Però che a costui si appartenea di scuotere li tributi; per qual cagione ciascuno di loro furono chiamati al re.	28 in spite of the demand of Sostratus, the commandant of the citadel, whose duty it was to collect the taxes. For this reason, both were summoned before the king.
29 E Menelao fue rimosso dal sacerdozio, succedendogli Lisimaco suo fratello; e Sostrato fu mandato presidente in Cipro.	29 Menelaus left his brother Lysimachus as his substitute in the high priesthood, while Sostratus left Crates, commander of the Cypriots, as his substitute.
30 E trattandosi queste cagioni, addivenne che quelli di Tarso e quelli di Mallo moverono sedizione, per ch' erano dati in dono alla concubina dello re Antioco.	30 While these things were taking place, the people of Tarsus and Mallus rose in revolt, because their cities had been given as a gift to Antiochis, the king's mistress.
31 E subitamente venne il re a quietare loro, rimanendo sostituto Andronico, uno delli suoi prìncipi.	31 The king, therefore, went off in haste to settle the affair, leaving Andronicus, one of his nobles, as his deputy.
32 E (dopo questo) pensò Menelao, e prese a sè il tempo comodo, e rubò alcuni vasi di oro del tempio, degli quali alcuni donò ad Andronico, e il resto vendette in Tiro e per le città vicine.	32 Then Menelaus, thinking this a good opportunity, stole some gold vessels from the temple and presented them to Andronicus; he had already sold some other vessels in Tyre and in the neighboring cities.
33 La qual cosa avendola certissimamente intesa Onia, lo riprendeva, essendosi lui ridotto in Antiochia, in luogo sicuro senza danno.	33 When Onias had clear evidence of the facts, he made a public protest, after withdrawing to the inviolable sanctuary at Daphne, near Antioch.
34 Onde Menelao se ne andò ad Andronico, e pregavalo ch' egli uccidesse Onia. Il quale essendo venuto a Onia, e avendogli data la fede con giuramento, avvenga che gli fosse sospetto, gli persuase ch' egli uscisse del tempio; il qual uscito, sùbito l'uccise, non avendo rispetto alla giustizia.	34 Thereupon Menelaus approached Andronicus privately and asked him to lay hands on Onias. So Andronicus went to Onias, and by treacherously reassuring him through sworn pledges with right hands joined, persuaded him, in spite of his suspicions, to leave the sanctuary. Then, without any regard for justice, he immediately put him to death.
35 Per la qual cagione non solamente i giudei, ma anco l'altre nazioni s'erano indignate, e con grande molestia sosteneano la ingiusta morte di uno tanto uomo.	35 As a result, not only the Jews, but many people of other nations as well, were indignant and angry over the unjust murder of the man.
36 Ed essendo ritornato il re de' luoghi di Cilicia, andarono i Giudei in Antiochia, e anco con esso loro i Greci, lamentandosi della iniqua morte di Onia.	36 When the king returned from the region of Cilicia, the Jews of the city, together with the Greeks who detested the crime, went to see him about the murder of Onias.
37 La qual cosa udita, Antioco attristossi nell'animo per cagione di Onia; e provocato a misericordia pianse, riduttosi a memoria la integrità e modestia del morto.	37 Antiochus was deeply grieved and full of pity; he wept as he recalled the prudence and noble conduct of the deceased.
38 E acceso nell' animo, comandò che fusse preso Andronico, e spogliatogli la vestimenta di rosato, fusse menato per tutta la città, e in quel medesimo luogo, nel quale egli avea commesso contro Onia tal empietade, fusse privato della vita, come uomo sacrilego, dandogli il Signore la pena a lui condegna.	38 Inflamed with anger, he immediately stripped Andronicus of his purple robe, tore off his other garments, and had him led through the whole city to the very place where he had committed the outrage against Onias; and there he put the murderer to death. Thus the Lord rendered him the punishment he deserved.
39 E avendo commessi Lisimaco molti sacrilegii per consiglio di Menelao, essendo già divulgata la loro mala fama, congregossi la moltitudine contro a Lisimaco, avendo lui già tolto molto oro.	39 Many sacrilegious thefts had been committed by Lysimachus in the city with the connivance of Menelaus. When word was spread that a large number of gold vessels had been stolen, the people assembled in protest against Lysimachus.
40 E levandosi le turbe, avendo li loro animi pieni d'ira, Lisimaco insieme quasi con tremilia uomini armati cominciò a ferire le turbe, essendogli duca uno tiranno provetto di etate e di pazzia	40 As the crowds, now thoroughly enraged, began to riot, Lysimachus launched an unjustified attack against them with about three thousand armed men under the leadership of Auranus, a man as advanced in folly as he was in years.
41 Ma intendendo le turbe la violenza d'esso Lisimaco e il suo sforzo, alcuni pigliorono le pietre; alcuni, bastoni forti; e alcuni gettavano la cenere contra di Lisimaco.	41 Reacting against Lysimachus' attack, the people picked up stones or pieces of wood or handfuls of the ashes lying there and threw them in wild confusion at Lysimachus and his men.
42 Onde che essendo alcuni feriti, alcuni suffocati, tutti si voltorono in fuga; intanto che anco esso Lisimaco sacrilego ucciderono appo lo erario.	42 As a result, they wounded many of them and even killed a few, while they put all the rest to flight. The sacrilegious thief himself they slew near the treasury.
43 Di queste cose adunque si cominciò anco litigare in giudizio contro Menelao.	43 Charges about this affair were brought against Menelaus.
44 Ed essendo venuto il re alla città di Tiro, tre uomini gli quali erano de' più antichi furono mandati a deponere questa cagione dinanzi a lui.	44 When the king came to Tyre, three men sent by the senate presented to him the justice of their cause.
45 Ed essendo superato Menelao (in giudicio), promèsse a Tolomeo di darli molta pecunia, acciò ch' egli persuadesse al re in favore suo.	45 But Menelaus, seeing himself on the losing side, promised Ptolemy, son of Dorymenes, a substantial sum of money if he would win the king over.
46 Essendo veramente Tolomeo in una sala per pigliare alquanto di refrigerio, (partissi e) andossene al re, e revocò il re dalla sentenza.	46 So Ptolemy retired with the king under a colonnade, as if to get some fresh air, and persuaded him to change his mind.
47 E (con sue persuasioni) fece liberare Menelao, pieno d'ogni malizia, dagli mali ch' egli avea commessi; e quegli miseri, i quali se anco appresso i Sciti avessono dedutta questa causa. sarebbono stati giustificati, furono condannati a morte.	47 Menelaus, who was the cause of all the trouble, the king acquitted of the charges, while he condemned to death those poor men who would have been declared innocent even if they had pleaded their case before Scythians.
48 Subito adunque a coloro, i quali aveano agitata la cagione per il popolo e i vasi sacri, gli fu data la ingiusta pena.	48 Thus, those who had prosecuted the case for the city, for the people, and for the sacred vessels, quickly suffered unjust punishment.
49 Per la qual cosa, essendo quegli di Tiro indignati, dimonstrorono grande liberalità alla loro sepultura.	49 For this reason, even some Tyrians were indignant over the crime and provided sumptuously for their burial.
50 Ma Menelao per cagione della avarizia di coloro i quali reggevano, rimase in (autorità e) podestà, crescendo in malizia e in insidie de' cittadini.	50 But Menelaus, thanks to the covetousness of the men in power, remained in office, where he grew in wickedness and became the chief plotter against his fellow citizens.
