1 Intanto abbiendo inteso il re Demetrio, che Nicanore era stato isconfitto e morto insieme colla sua oste, sì ordinoe ancora di mandare in Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, e lo destro corno (dell' oste) con loro, (cioè la schiera forte, la quale soleva stare dal lato ritto del re).	1 In the mean time when Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army were fallen in battle, he sent again Bacchides and Alcimus into Judea; and the right wing of his army with them.
2 E andàronsene per la via che capita in Galgala, e puosono il campo in Masalot lo quale è in Arbelli; e preserla per forza, e uccisono ivi molti uomini.	2 And they took the road that leadeth to Galgal, and they camped in Masaloth, which is in Arabella: and they made themselves masters of it, and slew many people.
3 Nel primo mese delli CLII anni (del regno de' Greci) puosono oste a Ierusalem.	3 In the first month of the hundred and fifty-second year they brought the army to Jerusalem:
4 E poi, levandosi quindi, se n'andarono in Berea, e furono XX milia uomini a piè, e duo milia cavalieri.	4 And they arose, and went to Berea with twenty thousand men, and two thousand horsemen.
5 Ma Giuda avea già posto il suo campo in Laisa, ed erano con lui (solamente) tre milia uomini eletti.	5 Now Judas had pitched his tents in Laisa, and three thousand chosen men with him:
6 Onde costoro, quand' egli viddono la moltitudine dell' oste, cominciarono fortemente a temere; e partironsi molti fuori dell' oste celatamente, che non ne rimase con Giuda se non ottocento uomini.	6 And they saw the multitude of the army that they were many, and they were seized with great fear: and many withdrew themselves out of the camp, and there remained of them no more than eight hundred men.
7 Allora, quando Giuda vide che la sua oste era così minuita e che la battaglia il costrigneva, si conturbò nell' animo suo, però che non vedeva tempo di raccogliere più di sua gente; e così per questo fu molto isgomentato.	7 And Judas saw that his army slipped away, and the battle pressed upon him, and his heart was cast down: because he had not time to gather them together, and he was discouraged.
8 Ma (non di meno egli) pur disse a coloro che erano con lui rimasi: suso valentemente, andiamo incontro agli nostri nimici, e proviamo se noi gli possiamo vincere.	8 Then he said to them that remained: Let us arise, and go against our enemies, if we may be able to fight against them.
9 Ma loro non di meno sì dubitavano e isconsigliavano, dicendo: (o signor nostro) noi non potremo a loro contrastare, ma piacciati che noi scampiamo, e torniamo indietro alli nostri fratelli; e quando noi saremo colla nostra gente radunati, allora combatteremo; (e però perdonaci), chè noi siamo troppo pochi.	9 But they dissuaded him, saying: We shall not be able, but let us save our lives now, and return to our brethren, and then we will fight against them: for we are but few.
10 Allora disse Giuda: non piaccia a Dio che noi usiamo tanta viltade, che noi fuggiamo dinanzi dagli nimici nostri; anzi (combattiamo, e) se la nostra morte è pure presso, (vendiamla loro cara, e) moiamo in virtude per li nostri fratelli, e non concediamo disonore alla nostra gloria.	10 Then Judas said: God forbid we should do this thing, and flee away from them: but if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our glory.
11 Allora si mosse l'oste de' nemici del campo loro, e furono loro a petto; e li loro cavalieri si divisono in due parti, e gli arcieri e quelli delle rombole andavano dinanzi dall' oste, e tutti i potenti battaglieri erano nella prima battaglia.	11 And the army removed out of the camp, and they stood over against them: and the horsemen were divided into two troops, and the slingers, and the archers went before the army, and they that were in the front were all men of valour.
12 Ma Bacchide era nel destro corno (della ischiera), e appressossi la loro legione da due parti, e sonarono le trombe.	12 And Bacchides was in the right wing, and the legion drew near on two sides, and they sounded the trumpets:
13 E ancora quegli ch' erano con Giuda, similmente sonavano e gridavano; e pareva che la terra si movesse (per gli suoni e) per le voci dell' oste; e cominciossi la battaglia, la quale durò dalla mattina insino al vespro.	13 And they also were on Judas' side, even they also cried out, and the earth shook at the noise of the armies: and the battle was fought from morning even unto the evening.
14 E veggendo Giuda che la destra della schiera, ove era Bacchide, era più ferma, (e più forte che l' altre), percosse fortemente a loro, e con lui insieme. quelli ch' erano più franchi e animosi;	14 And Judas perceived that the stronger part of the army of Bacchides was on the right side, and all the stout of heart came together with him:
15 E ruppegli, e cacciogli insino al monte d' Azoto.	15 And the right wing was discomfited by them, and he pursued them even to the mount Azotus.
16 Ma gli battaglieri, ch' erano dal sinistro corno (della battaglia), veggendo come il destro corno (della loro gente) era isconfitto (e scacciato), tennero dietro a Giuda e a sua gente, percotendo loro di dietro alle spalle.	16 And they that were in the left wing saw that the right wing was discomfited, and they followed after Judas, and them that were with him, at their back:
17 Onde la battaglia fu molto pericolosa, (però che quelli che cacciavano erano cacciati); onde (essendo gli suoi nel mezzo de' nemici) molti ne furono morti, tagliati da ogni parte.	17 And the battle was hard fought, and there fell many wounded of the one side and of the other.
18 Ma alla fine Giuda fu morto, e chi potè de' suoi campoe.	18 And Judas was slain, and the rest fled away.
19 (Fatte tutte queste cose), Ionata e Simone suoi fratelli (sì pervenneno quivi, e) ricolsono il corpo morto di Giuda, e sì lo seppellirono nel monumento de' loro padri nella città di Modin.	19 And Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of their fathers in the city of Modin.
20 E tutto il popolo d' Israel il pianse con grande pianto per molti dì.	20 And all the people of Israel bewailed him with great lamentation, and they mourned for him many days.
21 E dicevano a Iddio: come hai potuto fare cadere il potente uomo, il quale faceva salvo il popolo d'Israel?	21 And said: How is the mighty man fallen, that saved the people of Israel!
22 E veramente le molte battaglie che faceva Giuda Maccabeo e le sue grandi virtudi e la sua grandezza (e la sua prodezza) non sono qui tutte scritte; per ciò che furono molte più.	22 But the rest of the words of the wars of Judas, and of the noble acts that he did, and of his greatness, are not written: for they were very many.
23 Dopo la morte di Giuda la mala gente si levò suso (a mal fare) per tutti li confini d' Israel, e cominciaronsi a palesare tutti quegli che male facevano.	23 And it came to pass after the death of Judas, that the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the confines of Israel, and all the workers of iniquity rose up.
24 E in quel tempo fue grande fame (per tutto il paese); onde tutto il paese si diede a rendere a Bacchide.	24 In those days there was a very great famine, and they and all their country yielded to Bacchides.
25 E (quando) Bacchide (ne fu signore,) sì elesse certi malvagi uomini, e ordinogli signori della regione (e delle contrade).	25 And Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country:
26 Le quali loro spiavano, e addomandavano delli amici di Giuda, (e prendevangli) e menavangli dinanzi a Bacchide, ed egli straziandogli si vendicava di loro.	26 And they sought out, and made diligent search after the friends of Judas, and brought them to Bacchides, and he took vengeance of them, and abused them.
27 E così fu nel popolo di Dio grande tribulazione, maggiore che si sentisse da poi che non apparve profeta tra le genti d' Israel.	27 And there was a great tribulation in Israel, such as was not since the day, that there was no prophet seen in Israel.
28 Allora si radunarono tutti gli amici di Giuda, e dissono a Ionata:	28 And all the friends of Judas came together, and said to Jonathan:
29 Da poi in qua che morì (il buon) Giuda tuo fratello, alcuno uomo non si trova simile a lui, il quale si levi contro a' nimici, e contro a Bacchide, e contro a quelli che sono nimici della gente nostra.	29 Since thy brother Judas died, there is not a man like him to go forth against our enemies, Bacchides, and them that are the enemies of our nation.
30 Adunque noi oggi eleggiamo te; piacciati d'essere nostro principe in suo luogo, e si nostro duca a combattere nelle nostre battaglie.	30 Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince, and captain in his stead to fight our battles.
31 Ionata adunque ricevette in quel tempo il principato, e fue signore in luogo del buon Giuda suo fratello.	31 So Jonathan took upon him the government at that time, and rose up in the place of Judas his brother.
32 E quando Bacchide il seppe, cercava di lui uccidere.	32 And Bacchides had knowledge of it, and sought to kill him.
33 Ma Ionata e Simone suo fratello se n'avviddono, e anche tutti quegli che tenevano con loro; donde loro se ne fuggirono nel deserto di Tecue, e accamparonsi a lato al lago di Asfar.	33 And Jonathan and Simon his brother, knew it, and all that were with them: and they fled into the desert of Thecua, and they pitched by the water of the lake of Asphar,
34 E quando Bacchide l'ebbe spiato, egli in persona con tutta la sua oste venne il sabbato di là dal (fiume) Giordano.	34 And Bacchides understood it, and he came himself with all his army over the Jordan on the sabbath day.
35 E mandò Ionata, (Giovanni) suo fratello inanzi per capitano del popolo, e pregò li Nabutei, i quali erano suoi amici, che loro gli conducessono lo apparecchiamento suo (cioè della vittuaglia) della quale n'era dovizioso il paese (in quella stagione, e prestassono loro i padiglioni e l'arme, infino che combattessono con Bacchide, però che li Nabutei n' aveano copiosamente).	35 And Jonathan sent his brother a captain of the people, to desire the Nabutheans his friends, that they would lend them their equipage, which was copious.
36 Ora in questo tempo avvenne che i figliuoli di Iambri uscirono di Madaba, e presono Giovanni (fratello di Ionata) con tutti gli suoi arnesi, e fuggironsi con lui e con li arnesi, (e con altri che aveano presi, e misono a morte Giovanni).	36 And the children of Jambri came forth out of Madaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went away with them.
37 Di che questa cosa fue fatta a sapere a Ionata e a Simone suo fratello (di che avvenne poi a poco di tempo), che li detti figliuoli di Iambri facevano grandi nozze, però che l' uno di loro menava moglie di Madaba, figliuola d' uno principe di Canaan, con grande gloria e festa.	37 After this it was told Jonathan, and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride out of Madaba, the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan, with great pomp.
38 Allora (Ionata e Simone) si ricordarono del sangue (sparto della morte) di Giovanni loro fratello; di che puosono uno agguato a una rivolta di uno monte.	38 And the remembered the blood of John their brother: and they went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain.
39 E poco istante viddono la grande burbanza del maritaggio e lo grande apparecchiamento; e lo sposo veniva inanzi, e li suoi fratelli e li amici gli venivano incontro con tamburi e altri stromenti è con molte armi.	39 And they lifted up their eyes, and saw: and behold a tumult, and great preparation: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends, and his brethren to meet them with timbrels, and musical instruments, and many weapons.
40 Allora uscirono dello agguato, e sì gli uccisono; e molti ne furono feriti, e gli altri se ne fuggirono nel monte; e presono le loro robe.	40 And they rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and slew them, and there fell many wounded, and the rest fled into the mountains, and they took all their spoils:
41 E feciono tornare le loro nozze in pianto, e gli stromenti in lamento.	41 And the marriage was turned into mourning, and the noise of their musical instruments into lamentation.
42 E feciono la vendetta del sangue (della morte) del loro fratello, e tornaronsi alla ripa del (fiume) Giordano.	42 And they took revenge for the blood of their brother: and they returned to the bank of the Jordan.
43 E quando Bacchide intese questo, venne infino alla contrada del Giordano nel dì del sabbato con grande potenza.	43 And Bacchides heard it, and he came on the sabbath day even to the bank of the Jordan with a great power.
44 Allora disse Ionata alla sua gente: suso valentemente, combattiamo contro alli nostri nimici; imperciò che oggi non è sì come jeri, nè sì come l'altro dì.	44 And Jonathan said to his company: Let us arise, and fight against our enemies: for it is not now as yesterday, and the day before.
45 Per che noi abbiamo la battaglia dinanzi, e l'acqua del Giordano è quindi e quinci, e sonci le ripe e li paduli e le campagne; e non ci è luogo da raccogliersi per fuga.	45 And behold the battle is before us, and the water of the Jordan on this side and on that side, and banks, and marshes, and woods: and there is no place for us to turn aside.
46 Adunque dirizzate le vostre menti al cielo. e pregate Iddio che ci liberi delle mani de' nostri nimici. E allora incominciò la battaglia.	46 Now therefore cry ye to heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies. And they joined battle.
47 E Ionata si fece incontro a Bacchide, e stese la mano per percuoterlo; ma egli si trasse indietro.	47 And Jonathan stretched forth his hand to strike Bacchides, but he turned away from him backwards.
48 Ma Ionata e la sua gente (s' assicurarono e) gittaronsi per lo Giordano, e passarono oltre alli loro nimici.	48 And Jonathan, and they that were with him leaped into the Jordan, and swam over the Jordan to them:
49 E furono morti in quel dì, di quegli di Bacchide, mille uomini; onde (Ionata fu vincitore, ma gl' inimici) si tornarono in Ierusalem.	49 And there fell of Bacchides' side that day a thousand man: and they returned to Jerusalem,
50 Ed edificarono le cittadi in Iudea, e armarono la fortezza la quale era in Ierico, e (afforzarono) in Ammaum e in Betoron e in Betel, e in Tamnata e Fara e Topo, (e adornaronle) d' alte mura e di porte e di serrami.	50 And they built strong cities in Judea, the fortress that was in Jericho, and in Ammaus, and in Bethoron, and in Bethel, and Thamnata, and Phara, and Thopo, with high walls, and gates, and bars.
51 E bacchide vi mise dentro molte guardie, acciò che facessono guerra contro alla gente d'Israel.	51 And he placed garrisons in them, that they might wage war against Israel:
52 E similmente armò la città di Betsura e Gazara e la rocca, e puosevi fornimento e vittuaglia.	52 And he fortified the city of Bethsura, and Gazara, and the castle, and set garrisons in them, and provisions of victuals:
53 E tolsevi per ostaggi i figliuoli de' prìncipi del paese, e misegli nella rocca di Ieruselem in buona guardia.	53 And he took the sons of the chief men of the country for hostages, and put them in the castle in Jerusalem in custody.
54 E nel CLIII anno (del regno de' Greci), il secondo mese, comandò Alcimo, che fossono distrutte le mura della santa casa di Dio dal lato dentro, e ancora l'opere de' profeti; ed (egli medesimo) incominciò a farle distruggere.	54 Now in the year one hundred and fifty-three, the second month, Alcimus commanded the walls of the inner court of the sanctuary to be thrown down, and the works of the prophets to be destroyed: and he began to be destroyed: and he began to destroy.
55 Ma egli in quel tempo fu percosso; e le sue opere furono impedite, e la sua bocca fu rinchiusa, e fu compreso dalla (infermitade che si chiama) parlasia; e non poteva più parlare, nè disporre i fatti della sua casa.	55 At that time Alcimus was struck: and his works were hindered, and his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak a word, nor give order concerning his house.
56 E così morì Alcimo in quel tempo.	56 And Alcimus died at that time in great torment.
57 E veggendo Bacchide ch' era morto Alcimo, sì si ritornò al re; e così riposò il paese due anni.	57 And Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead: and he returned to the king, and the land was quiet for two years.
58 E intanto tutti i malvagi uomini (del paese) si radunarono, e dissono: ecco il tempo da (poterci rallegrare e) prendere vendetta di Ionata, e di quegli che con lui sono; adunque mandiamo per Bacchide, e tutti gli prendiamo in una notte; imperò che vivono in pace, e non prendono guardia di loro.	58 And all the wicked held a council, saying: Behold Jonathan, and they that are with him, dwell at ease, and without fear: now therefore let us bring Bacchides hither, and he shall take them all in one night.
59 E andarono (a Bacchide), e dierongli questo consiglio.	59 So they went, and gave him counsel.
60 Ed egli s' apparecchiava colla sua oste per venire; e celatamente mandò lettere alli suoi compagni ch' erano in Iudea, acciò che pigliassono Ionata e tutti quelli ch' erano con lui; ma loro non poterono, però che fu fatto loro a sapere.	60 And he arose to come with a great army: and he sent secretly letters to his adherents that were in Judea, to seize upon Jonathan, and them that were with him: but they could not, for their design was known to them.
61 Onde (Ionata si provvidde, e) prese L uomini de' principi del paese, i quali erano de' maggiori della cavalleria, e sì gli uccise.	61 And he apprehended of the men of the country, that were the principal authors of the mischief, fifty men, and slew them.
62 Allora Ionata e Simone, e quegli ch' erano con loro, (sì partirono quindi, e) andarono in Betbessen la quale era nel diserto, e racconciarono le sue rovine, e rifecionla da capo.	62 And Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him retired into Bethbessen, which is in the desert: and he repaired the breaches thereof, and they fortified it.
63 E quando Bacchide il seppe, radunò tutta la sua potenza; e radunoe la forza di tutta Iudea.	63 And when Bacchides knew it, he gathered together all his multitude: and sent word to them that were of Judea.
64 E mossesi, e puose campo di sopra a Betbessen; e combatteronla molti dì, e fecionvi molti ingegni.	64 And he came, and camped above Bethbessen, and fought against it many days, and made engines.
65 Allora Ionata lasciò Simone suo fratello nella città, e uscì egli fuori (e andò) per lo paese, e venne con alquanta gente.	65 But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth into the country: and came with a number of men.
66 E percosse Odaren e li suoi fratelli e li figliuoli di Faseron nelle tende loro; e così incominciarono ad avanzare, e a riuscire in virtude.	66 And struck Odares, and his brethren, and the children of Phaseron in their tents, and he began to slay, and to increase in forces.
67 Ma Simone, e ancora quegli ch' erano con lui, uscirono fuori della cittade, e affocarono li ingegni.	67 But Simon and they that were with him, sallied out of the city, and burnt the engines.
68 E combatterono contro a Bacchide, e fue soperchiato da loro; e fecerli grande danno, imperciò che il suo consiglio e lo suo movimento fu vano.	68 And they fought against Bacchides, and he was discomfited by them: and they afflicted him exceedingly, for his counsel, and his enterprise was in vain.
69 Per la qual cosa si accese il furore suo contro a quegli rei uomini (del popolo) che lo aveano consigliato che venisse nella contrada; e uccise molti di loro, e sì si partì, e ritornò nel suo paese colla gente che gli era rimasa.	69 And he was angry with the wicked men that had given him counsel to come into their country, and he slew many of them: and he purposed to return with the rest into their country.
70 E quando Ionata il seppe, sì gli mandò dietro ambasciatori per fare pace con lui, e (promisegli di) rendergli tutti i suoi prigioni.	70 And Jonathan had knowledge of it, and he sent ambassadors to him to make peace with him, and to restore to him the prisoners.
71 Ed egli volentieri ricevette la pace, e fece com' egli gli addomandava, e giurogli di non fargli più male in tutto il tempo della sua vita.	71 And he accepted it willingly, and did according to his words, and swore that the would do him no harm all the days of his life.
72 E rendègli tutti i suoi prigioni di Giudea ch' egli avea dinanzi presi; e poi si partì, e andossene nella sua terra, e fermoe nell' animo suo di non venire più ne' suoi confini.	72 And he restored to him the prisoners which he before had taken out of the land of Juda: and he returned and went away into his own country, and he came no more into their borders.
73 E così si partì la pestilenza d' Israel; e Ionata abitò in Macmas, e quivi tenne giustizia al popolo (d' Israel, cominciando a fare giustize ia ragione a tutti), e distrusse la mala gente (del popolo) d' Israel.	73 So the sword ceased from Israel: and Jonathan dwelt in Machmas, and Jonathan began there to judge the people, and he destroyed the wicked out of Israel.
