1 Vedendo adunque il popolo, che dimoranza facesse Moisè di discendere del monte, raunato incontro ad Aaron, disse: lèvati, e fa li dii li quali va dano dinanzi a noi; ed a Moisè, questo uomo che trasse noi della terra d'Egitto, non sappiamo quello che gli è incontrato.	1 Then the people, seeing that Moses made a delay in descending from the mountain, gathered together against Aaron, and said: “Rise up, make us gods, who may go before us. But as for this man Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.”
2 E disse Aaron a loro: togliete le cose dell' oro delle orecchie delle mogli e delli figliuoli [e delle figliuole] vostre, e recatele a me.	2 And Aaron said to them, “Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, and your sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”
3 Fece lo popolo quello che comandò, ed arreccaronle ad Aaron.	3 And the people did what he had commanded, carrying the earrings to Aaron.
4 Le quali, quando quegli le tolse, formò di lavorìo fonduto; e fece di quelle cose uno vitello conflatile. E dissero: questi sono i tuoi dii, Israel, che ti trassero della terra d'Egitto.	4 And when he had received them, he formed these by the work of a casting furnace, and he made from these a molten calf. And they said: “These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.”
5 La quale cosa quando la vide Aaron, edificò uno altare dinanzi a lui; e la voce del banditore andò dicendo: domani è la solennità del Signore.	5 And when Aaron had seen it, he built an altar before it, and he cried out with a voice of proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow is the solemnity of the Lord.”
6 E levandosi la mattina, offersero sacrificio ed ostie pacifiche; e sedette il popolo a manicare e a bere, e levaronsi a giuocare.	6 And rising up in the morning, they offered holocausts, and peace victims, and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and they rose up to play.
7 Favello lo Signore a Moisè, dicendo: va, discendi del monte, però che peccoe lo popolo tuo, il quale hai menato della terra d'Egitto.	7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Go, descend. Your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, have sinned.
8 Partiti sono tosto della via che tu mostrasti loro, e loro hanno fatto a loro uno vitello conflatile, e hanno adorato, e sacrificato a lui l'ostie, e dissono: questi sono i tuoi Iddii, Israel, che ti ca varono della terra d'Egitto.	8 They have quickly withdrawn from the way which you revealed to them. And they have made for themselves a molten calf, and they have worshiped it. And immolating victims to it, they have said: ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.’ ”
9 E anche disse lo Signore a Moisè: io vedo che questo popolo è di duro capo.	9 And again, the Lord said to Moses: “I discern that this people is stiff-necked.
10 Lasciami, acciò che si adiri lo furore mio contra di loro, e ch' io li disfacci; e te farò in gran dissima gente.	10 Release me, so that my fury may be enraged against them, and I may destroy them, and then I will make of you a great nation.”
11 Ma Moisè orava al suo Signore Iddio, dicendo: perchè si adira, o Signore, lo furore tuo contro allo popolo tuo, lo quale hai menato della terra d'Egitto nella fortezza grande e nella mano robusta?	11 Then Moses prayed to the Lord his God, saying: “Why, O Lord, is your fury enraged against your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with a mighty hand?
12 Io t'addomando, che per avventura non di cano quelli d'Egitto: astutamente gli menò loro, acciò che gli uccidesse nelli monti, e istruggesse li di terra; istia cheta l'ira tua, e plàcati sopra la iniquità del popolo tuo.	12 I beg you, let not the Egyptians say, ‘He cleverly led them away, so that he could put them to death in the mountains and destroy them from the earth.’ Let your anger be quieted and appeased concerning the wickedness of your people.
13 Ricordati di Abraam, di Isaac, e d'Israel tuoi servi, alli quali giurasti per te medesimo, dicendo: io moltiplicherò lo seme vostro, siccome le stelle del cielo; e tutta questa generazione, della quale io favello, darò al seme vostro; e possederete la terra.	13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your very self, saying: ‘I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And this entire land, about which I have spoken, I will give to your offspring. And you shall possess it forever.’ ”
14 E placato è il Signore, acciò che non facesse il male, il quale avea detto, incontro al popolo suo.	14 And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.
15 E ritornò Moisè del monte, portando due tavole della testimonianza nella mano, scritte da ciascheduna parte,	15 And Moses returned from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides,
16 e fatte collo lavorio del Signore; e la scrittura del Signore era scolpita nelle tavole.	16 and accomplished by the work of God. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.
17 E udendo Iosuè lo rumore del popolo gridando, disse a Moisè: grida di battaglia è udita nelli alloggiamenti.	17 Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”
18 Il quale rispose: non è rumore di confortatori alla battaglia, nè rumore delli scaccianti alla fuga; ma voce di canto io odo.	18 But he responded: “It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, nor the shout of men being compelled to flee. But I hear the voice of singing.”
19 E quand'egli s'approssimo allo alloggia mento, onde lo vitello e li compagni vidde, s'adirò Moisè molto forte, e gittò le tavole, le quali avea in mano, e sì le spezzò a piede del monte.	19 And when he had approached to the camp, he saw the calf and the dances. And being very angry, he threw down the tablets from his hand, and he broke them at the base of the mountain.
20 E togliendo lo vitello, che il popolo avea fatto, sì l'arse; e tutto lo trito, come polvere; la quale isparse nell'acqua, e diede di quella a bevere alli figliuoli d'Israel.	20 And seizing the calf, which they had made, he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, which he scattered into water. And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.
21 E disse Moisè ad Aaron: che ti fece questo popolo, conciosiacosa che tu inducessi sopra loro grandissimo peccato?	21 And he said to Aaron, “What has this people done to you, so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”
22 Il quale rispose: non s'indigni lo Signore mio; tu in verità hai conosciuto, che questo popolo è inchinevole a fare il male.	22 And he answered him: “Let not my lord be indignant. For you know this people, that they are prone to evil.
23 Loro dissero a me: facci gli dii, che ci va dano innanzi; chè in verità a questo Moisè, che mende noi della terra d'Egitto, non sappiamo che gli sia incontrato.	23 They said to me: ‘Make gods for us, who may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.’
24 Alli quali io dissi: chi ha di voi oro? Ed egli s'allargarono, e diederlo a me; e io lo gittai nel fuoco, e uscito n' è questo vitello.	24 And I said to them, ‘Which of you has gold?’ And they took it and gave it to me. And I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
25 Vedendo adunque Moisè lo popolo, ch' era spogliato; però che l'avea spogliato Aaron per la rusticchezza della bruttura, e tra li nemici nudo l'avea constituto;	25 Therefore, Moses, seeing that the people were naked (for Aaron had stripped them because of the disgrace of their sordidness, and he had set them naked among their enemies),
26 e stando nella entrata delli alloggiamenti, disse: se alcuno è del Signore, aggiunghisi a me. E raunati sono a lui tutti li figliuoli di Levi.	26 and standing at the gate of the camp, said: “If anyone is for the Lord, let him join with me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.
27 Ai quali disse: questo dice il Signore Iddio d'Israel: ponga l'uomo lo coltello sopra lo fianco suo; andate, e ritornando dalla porta infino alla porta per mezzo de' loggiamenti, uccida ciascuno lo fratello, e l'amico del prossimo suo.	27 And he said to them: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Let a man place his sword at his thigh. Go forth, and then return, from gate to gate, through the midst of the camp, and let each one kill his brother, and friend, and neighbor.”
28 E feceno i figliuoli di Levi secondo la parola di Moisè; e uccisero in quello di quasi XXIII milia d'uomini.	28 And the sons of Levi did according to the words of Moses, and there fell on that day about twenty-three thousand men.
29 E disse Moisè: avete consecrate le mani vostre oggi al Signore, ciascheduno nel figliuolo e nel fratello suo, acciò che sia data a voi la benedizione.	29 And Moses said: “On this day, you have consecrated your hands to the Lord, each one in his son and in his brother, so that a blessing may be given to you.”
30 E fatto l'altro di, favelló Moisè al popolo: avete peccato massimo peccato; io salirò al Signore, in che modo potrò pregare lui per la fellonia vostra.	30 Then, when the next day arrived, Moses spoke to the people: “You have sinned the greatest sin. I will ascend to the Lord. Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”
31 E tornato Moisè al Signore, disse: io ti prego, Signore; peccòe questo popolo peccato grande, e feceno a loro li dii dell' oro; o tue perdona a loro questo errore,	31 And returning to the Lord, he said: “I beg you, this people has sinned the greatest sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold. Either release them from this offense,
32 o se tu nol farai, guastami del libro tuo il quale hai scritto.	32 or, if you do not, then delete me from the book that you have written.”
33 Al quale rispose lo Signore: chi peccherà a me, guasterò lui del libro mio;	33 And the Lord answered him: “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will delete from my book.
34 ma tu va, e mena questo popolo a quello luogo ch' io detto a te; l'angelo mio ti anderà innanzi; e io nel dì della vendetta visiterò questo peccato loro.	34 But as for you, go and lead this people where I have told you. My angel will go before you. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”
35 E percosse allora adunque lo Signore il popolo per lo peccato del vitello che fece Aaron.	35 Therefore, the Lord struck the people for the guilt of the calf, which Aaron had made.
