Primo libro di Samuele 11

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Nacas l'ammonita andò ad accamparsi contro Iabes di Galaad. Allora tutti gli uomini di Iabes dissero a Nacas: "Scendi a patti con noi e ti serviremo".	1 About a month later, Nahash the Ammonite marched up and laid siege to Jabesh in Gilead. Al themen of Jabesh said to Nahash, 'Make a treaty with us and we wil be your subjects.'
2 Rispose loro Nacas l'ammonita: "A questa condizione verrò a patti con voi, di cavarvi a tutti l'occhio destro. Lo farò ad infamia di tutto Israele".	2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, 'I shal make a treaty with you only on this condition, that I put out alyour right eyes, and I wil make it a taunt to the whole of Israel.'
3 Gli risposero gli anziani di Iabes: "Concedici sette giorni per mandare messaggeri in tutto il territorio d'Israele, e se non troveremo chi ci salva, ci arrenderemo a te".	3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, 'Give us seven days' grace while we send messengers throughoutthe territory of Israel, and if no one comes to our help, we wil come out to you.'
4 I messaggeri andarono a Gàbaa di Saul e riferirono le cose al popolo; allora tutto il popolo alzò grida e pianse.	4 The messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and reported this to the people, and al the people weptaloud.
5 Ecco che Saul stava tornando dietro i buoi dal campo. Saul domandò: "Che cosa ha il popolo che piange?". Gli riferirono le parole degli uomini di Iabes.	5 Now Saul was just then coming in from the fields behind his oxen, and he said, 'What is wrong? Whyare the people weeping?' They explained to him what the men of Jabesh had said.
6 Allora irruppe lo spirito di Dio su Saul, appena questi udì tali cose, e la sua ira si accese furente.	6 And the spirit of Yahweh seized on Saul when he heard these words, and he fel into a fury.
7 Prese un paio di buoi e li fece a pezzi; poi li spedì in tutto il territorio d'Israele per mezzo di messaggeri dicendo: "Chiunque non esce dietro Saul e dietro Samuele, riceverà un tale trattamento per il suo bestiame!". Allora il terrore del Signore si sparse sul popolo, ed essi uscirono compatti come un uomo solo.	7 He took a yoke of oxen, cut them into pieces and sent these by messengers throughout the territory ofIsrael with these words, 'Anyone who wil not march with Saul wil have the same done to his oxen!' At this, apanic from Yahweh swept on the people and they marched out as one man.
8 Saul li passò in rassegna a Bèzek: i figli d'Israele erano trecentomila e gli uomini di Giuda trentamila.	8 Saul inspected them at Bezek; there were three hundred thousand of Israel and thirty thousand ofJudah.
9 Poi dissero ai messaggeri che erano venuti: "Così direte agli abitanti di Iabes di Gàlaad: "Domani, quando il sole comincerà a scaldare, avrete aiuto". I messaggeri rientrarono e lo annunziarono agli uomini di Iabes che ne gioirono.	9 Then he said to the messengers who had come, 'This is what you are to say to the people of Jabeshin Gilead, "Tomorrow, by the time that the sun is hot, help wil reach you." ' The messengers went and reportedthis to the people of Jabesh who were overjoyed;
10 Allora gli uomini di Iabes dissero: "Domani usciremo da voi, e ci farete tutto quello che vi piacerà".	10 they said to Nahash, 'Tomorrow we shal come out to you and you can do whatever you like to us.'
11 Il giorno seguente Saul dispose il popolo in tre schiere, le quali, penetrate in mezzo all'accampamento sul far del mattino, batterono Ammon fino al caldo del giorno. I superstiti poi si sbandarono: non ne rimasero due insieme.	11 The next day, Saul disposed the army in three contingents, which burst into the middle of the campduring the dawn watch and slaughtered the Ammonites until high noon. The survivors were so scattered that notwo of them were left together.
12 Allora il popolo disse a Samuele: "Chi ha detto: "Saul non regnerà su di noi"? Consegnateci quegli uomini e li metteremo a morte!".	12 The people then said to Samuel, 'Who said, "Must we have Saul reigning over us?" Hand the menover, for us to put them to death.'
13 Rispose Saul: "Oggi nessuno sarà messo a morte, perché oggi il Signore ha operato la salvezza in Israele".	13 'No one must be put to death today,' Saul said, 'for today Yahweh has intervened to rescue Israel.'
14 Allora Samuele disse al popolo: "Venite, andiamo a Gàlgala per inaugurarvi il regno".	14 Samuel then said to the people, 'Let us now go to Gilgal and reaffirm the monarchy there.'
15 Tutto il popolo andò a Gàlgala e là riconobbe re Saul davanti al Signore; là offrirono sacrifici di comunione davanti al Signore; e là Saul fece grande festa insieme con tutti gli uomini d'Israele.	15 The people then al went to Gilgal. And there, at Gilgal, they proclaimed Saul king before Yahweh;they offered communion sacrifices before Yahweh, and there Saul and al the people of Israel gave themselvesover to great rejoicing.
