1 Arrivò anche a Derbe e a Listra. C'era là un discepolo di nome Timoteo, figlio di una donna giudea, credente, ma di padre greco,	1 Then he arrived at Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a faithful Jewish woman, his father a Gentile.
2 che era assai stimato dai fratelli in Listra e Iconio.	2 The brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium rendered good testimony to him.
3 Paolo voleva condurlo con sé nei suoi viaggi e, presolo con sé, lo circoncise, a causa dei Giudei che si trovavano in quelle regioni. Tutti infatti sapevano che suo padre era greco.	3 Paul wanted this man to travel with him, and taking him, he circumcised him, because of the Jews who were in those places. For they all knew that his father was a Gentile.
4 Mentre viaggiavano di città in città, trasmettevano loro i decreti sanciti dagli apostoli e dagli anziani in Gerusalemme, perché li osservassero.	4 And as they were traveling through the cities, they delivered to them the dogmas to be kept, which were decreed by the Apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem.
5 Le chiese si fortificavano nella fede e crescevano di numero ogni giorno.	5 And certainly, the Churches were being strengthened in faith and were increasing in number every day.
6 Passarono poi per la Frigia e la regione della Galazia, impediti dallo Spirito Santo ad annunciare la parola nell'Asia.	6 Then, while crossing through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the Word in Asia.
7 Giunti ai confini della Misia tentavano di recarsi in Bitinia, ma lo Spirito di Gesù non lo permise loro.	7 But when they had arrived in Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit them.
8 Allora, oltrepassata la Misia, discesero a Troade.	8 Then, when they had crossed through Mysia, they descended to Troas.
9 Durante la notte Paolo ebbe una visione: un macedone in piedi lo supplicava dicendo: "Passa in Macedonia e aiutaci".	9 And a vision in the night was revealed to Paul of a certain man of Macedonia, standing and pleading with him, and saying: “Cross into Macedonia and help us!”
10 Subito dopo la visione, cercammo di partire per la Macedonia, certi che Dio ci aveva chiamati per annunciare loro il vangelo.	10 Then, after he saw the vision, immediately we sought to set out for Macedonia, having been assured that God had called us to evangelize to them.
11 Salpàti da Tròade ci dirigemmo verso Samotràcia e il giorno seguente a Neàpoli.	11 And sailing from Troas, taking a direct path, we arrived at Samothrace, and on the following day, at Neapolis,
12 Di là ci recammo a Filippi, che è la prima città del distretto di Macedonia, ed è colonia. In questa città facemmo una sosta di parecchi giorni.	12 and from there to Philippi, which is the preeminent city in the area of Macedonia, a colony. Now we were in this city some days, conferring together.
13 Il sabato uscimmo fuori della porta, presso un fiume dove pensavamo che si facesse la preghiera. Ci mettemmo a sedere e parlammo alle donne che vi erano radunate.	13 Then, on the Sabbath day, we were walking outside the gate, beside a river, where there seemed to be a prayer gathering. And sitting down, we were speaking with the women who had assembled.
14 Una donna, di nome Lidia, venditrice di porpora, della città di Tiatira, che onorava Dio, stava in ascolto: il Signore le aprì il cuore perché potesse comprendere le cose dette da Paolo.	14 And a certain woman, named Lydia, a seller of purple in the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened. And the Lord opened her heart to be receptive to what Paul was saying.
15 Dopo essere stata battezzata con tutta la famiglia, ci invitò con queste parole: "Se mi giudicate fedele al Signore, venite a stare nella mia casa". E ci costrinse ad accettare.	15 And when she had been baptized, with her household, she pleaded with us, saying: “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, enter into my house and lodge there.” And she convinced us.
16 Or mentre ci recavamo alla preghiera, ci venne incontro una schiava che aveva uno spirito divinatorio, la quale procurava un forte guadagno ai suoi padroni pronunciando oracoli.	16 Then it happened that, as we were going out to prayer, a certain girl, having a spirit of divination, met with us. She was a source of great profit to her masters, through her divining.
17 Costei si mise a seguire Paolo e noi e ci gridava dietro: "Questi uomini sono i servi del Dio Altissimo, che vi annunciano la via della salvezza".	17 This girl, following Paul and us, was crying out, saying: “These men are servants of the Most High God! They are announcing to you the way of salvation!”
18 La cosa si ripeté per molti giorni. Paolo infine, seccato, rivoltosi allo spirito disse: "Ti comando, in nome di Gesù Cristo, di uscire da lei". In quello stesso momento lo spirito se ne uscì.	18 Now she behaved in this way for many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out from her.” And it went away in that same hour.
19 I padroni, vedendo che la speranza del loro guadagno era svanita, presero Paolo e Sila e li trascinarono nella piazza del mercato, davanti alle autorità.	19 But her masters, seeing that the hope of their profit went away, apprehended Paul and Silas, and they brought them to the rulers at the courthouse.
20 Li presentarono ai magistrati e dissero: "Questi uomini mettono a soqquadro la nostra città: sono Giudei	20 And presenting them to the magistrates, they said: “These men are disturbing our city, since they are Jews.
21 e predicano usanze che non possiamo accogliere né praticare, poiché siamo Romani".	21 And they are announcing a way which is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, since we are Romans.”
22 Allora la folla insorse contro di loro e i magistrati, fatti strappare loro di dosso i vestiti, comandarono che fossero bastonati.	22 And the people rushed together against them. And the magistrates, tearing their tunics, ordered them to be beaten with staffs.
23 Dopo averli caricati di percosse li gettarono nella prigione, ordinando al custode di custodirli con grande cautela.	23 And when they had inflicted many scourges on them, they cast them into prison, instructing the guard to watch them diligently.
24 Egli, a seguito di tale ordine, li gettò nella parte più interna della prigione e assicurò i piedi loro ai ceppi.	24 And since he had received this kind of order, he cast them into the interior prison cell, and he restricted their feet with stocks.
25 Verso la mezzanotte Paolo e Sila stavano pregando e cantando inni a Dio, e gli altri prigionieri li ascoltavano.	25 Then, in the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were praying and praising God. And those who were also in custody were listening to them.
26 Ed ecco che improvvisamente vi fu un terremoto così violento da scuotere le fondamenta del carcere. Si apersero di colpo tutte le porte e si sciolsero le catene di tutti i carcerati.	26 Yet truly, there was a sudden earthquake, so great that the foundations of the prison were moved. And immediately all the doors were opened, and the bindings of everyone were released.
27 Il custode della prigione, svegliatosi e viste aperte le porte della prigione, tratta fuori la spada stava per uccidersi, pensando che i prigionieri fossero fuggiti.	27 Then the prison guard, having been jarred awake, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drew his sword and intended to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.
28 Ma Paolo gridò a gran voce: "Non farti del male, poiché siamo tutti qui".	28 But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Do no harm to yourself, for we are all here!”
29 Allora chiese un lume, balzò dentro e tutto tremante cadde ai piedi di Paolo e di Sila.	29 Then calling for a light, he entered. And trembling, he fell before the feet of Paul and Silas.
30 Poi li condusse fuori e disse: "Signore, che cosa debbo fare per salvarmi?".	30 And bringing them outside, he said, “Sirs, what must I do, so that I may be saved?”
31 Essi risposero: "Credi nel Signore Gesù e sarai salvo tu e la tua famiglia".	31 So they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and then you will be saved, with your household.”
32 E annunciarono la parola del Signore a lui e a tutti quelli della sua casa.	32 And they spoke the Word of the Lord to him, along with all those who were in his house.
33 Egli, a quell'ora della notte, li prese con sé, lavò loro le piaghe e subito fu battezzato, lui e tutti i suoi.	33 And he, taking them in the same hour of the night, washed their scourges. And he was baptized, and next his entire household.
34 Poi li condusse a casa sua, apparecchiò loro la tavola e si rallegrò con tutta la sua famiglia perché aveva creduto in Dio.	34 And when he had brought them into his own house, he set a table for them. And he was joyous, with his entire household, believing in God.
35 Fattosi giorno, i magistrati mandarono i littori a dire: "Lascia andare liberi quegli uomini".	35 And when daylight had arrived, the magistrates sent the attendants, saying, “Release those men.”
36 Il custode della prigione riferì queste parole a Paolo: "I magistrati hanno mandato a dire di rilasciarvi. Ora dunque uscite e andate in pace".	36 But the prison guard reported these words to Paul: “The magistrates have sent to have you released. Now therefore, depart. Go in peace.”
37 Ma Paolo disse alle guardie: "Ci hanno bastonati pubblicamente e senza processo, noi che siamo cittadini romani, e ci hanno gettato in prigione; e ora di nascosto ci cacciano via? Così no! Vengano essi stessi a metterci in libertà!".	37 But Paul said to them: “They have beaten us publicly, though we were not condemned. They have cast men who are Romans into prison. And now they would drive us away secretly? Not so. Instead, let them come forward,
38 I littori riferirono queste parole ai magistrati ed essi si spaventarono, udendo che si trattava di cittadini romani,	38 and let us drive them away.” Then the attendants reported these words to the magistrates. And upon hearing that they were Romans, they were afraid.
39 e vennero a fare le loro scuse. Poi li accompagnarono fuori e li pregarono di allontanarsi dalla città.	39 And arriving, they pleaded with them, and leading them out, they begged them to depart from the city.
40 Usciti dalla prigione entrarono in casa di Lidia e, veduti i discepoli, li consolarono. Poi partirono.	40 And they went away from the prison and entered into the house of Lydia. And having seen the brothers, they consoled them, and then they set out.
