2 radunò circa ottantamila soldati con tutta la sua cavalleria e mosse contro i Giudei, contando di fare della città una residenza per i Greci,	2 mustered about eighty thousand infantry and all his cavalry and marched against the Jews. His plan was to make Jerusalem a Greek settlement;

4 non tenendo in alcun conto la potenza di Dio, ma confidando soltanto nelle sue miriadi di fanti, nelle sue migliaia di cavalieri e nei suoi ottanta elefanti.	4 He did not take God's power into account at all, but felt exultant confidence in his myriads of foot soldiers, his thousands of horsemen, and his eighty elephants.
5 Penetrato in Giudea, si avvicinò poi a Bet-Zur, che era una località fortificata, distante circa venti miglia da Gerusalemme, e la cinse d'assedio.	5 So he invaded Judea, and when he reached Beth-zur, a fortified place about twenty miles from Jerusalem, launched a strong attack against it.

7 Poi il Maccabeo stesso per primo prese le armi ed esortò gli altri ad affrontare il pericolo insieme a lui per soccorrere i loro fratelli. Si mossero tutti insieme con coraggio.	7 Maccabeus himself was the first to take up arms, and he exhorted the others to join him in risking their lives to help their kinsmen. Then they resolutely set out together.
8 Mentre erano ancora presso Gerusalemme, apparve alla loro testa un cavaliere vestito di bianco, che agitava armi d'oro.	8 Suddenly, while they were still near Jerusalem, a horseman appeared at their head, clothed in white garments and brandishing gold weapons.
9 Allora tutti insieme benedissero il misericordioso Dio e si rinvigorirono nell'animo, pronti ad assalire non solo gli uomini, ma anche le fiere selvagge e mura di ferro.	9 Then all of them together thanked God for his mercy, and their hearts were filled with such courage that they were ready to assault not only men, but the most savage beasts, yes, even walls of iron.
10 Avanzarono in ordine di battaglia con quell'alleato venuto dal cielo, grazie al Signore che aveva avuto di essi misericordia.	10 Now that the Lord had shown his mercy toward them, they advanced in battle order with the aid of their heavenly ally.
11 Quindi, gettatisi sui nemici come leoni, abbatterono undicimila fanti e milleseicento cavalieri, costringendo tutti gli altri alla fuga.	11 Hurling themselves upon the enemy like lions, they laid low eleven thousand foot soldiers and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the rest to flight.
12 La maggior parte di questi si mise in salvo, ma ferita e disarmata, e Lisia stesso si salvò fuggendo vergognosamente.	12 Most of those who got away were wounded and stripped of their arms, while Lysias himself escaped only by shameful flight.
13 Questi però, che non era privo d'intelligenza, riflettendo tra sé sulla disfatta che gli era capitata, comprese che gli Ebrei erano invincibili perché il potente Dio combatteva per essi.	13 But Lysias was not a stupid man. He reflected on the defeat he had suffered, and came to realize that the Hebrews were invincible because the mighty God was their ally. He therefore sent a message
14 Perciò inviò loro ambasciatori e li persuase a venire ad un accordo su quanto era giusto. A questo scopo egli avrebbe persuaso anche il re, costringendolo a farsi loro amico.	14 persuading them to settle everything on just terms, and promising to persuade the king also, and to induce him to become their friend.
15 Il Maccabeo acconsentì a tutte le cose che Lisia gli aveva proposto, preoccupato solo della comune utilità. Perciò quanto il Maccabeo richiese per iscritto a Lisia riguardo ai Giudei, il re lo concesse.	15 Maccabeus, solicitous for the common good, agreed to all that Lysias proposed; and the king, on his part, granted in behalf of the Jews all the written requests of Maccabeus to Lysias.
16 La lettera scritta da Lisia ai Giudei era concepita in questo modo: "Lisia al popolo dei Giudei: salute!	16 These are the terms of the letter which Lysias wrote to the Jews: "Lysias sends greetings to the Jewish people.
17 Giovanni e Assalonne, da voi inviati, mi consegnarono il documento sottotrascritto, pregandomi di ratificare quanto era in esso contenuto.	17 John and Absalom, your envoys, have presented your signed communication and asked about the matters contained in it.
18 Io, dunque, ho esposto al re quanto bisognava riferirgli e quanto era accettabile egli l'ha concesso.	18 Whatever had to be referred to the king I called to his attention, and the things that were acceptable he has granted.
19 Se perciò voi manterrete un favorevole atteggiamento verso il governo, io mi sforzerò di farmi promotore dei vostri vantaggi anche per il resto.	19 If you maintain your loyalty to the government, I will endeavor to further your interests in the future.
20 Quanto a queste cose e ad altre in particolare, ho dato ordine ai vostri e ai miei inviati di discuterne con voi.	20 On the details of these matters I have authorized my representatives, as well as your envoys, to confer with you.

They are petitioning us to let them retain their own customs.
25 Volendo perciò che anche questo popolo viva senza timore, decidiamo che sia loro restituito il tempio e che possano vivere secondo le consuetudini dei loro antenati.	25 Since we desire that this people too should be undisturbed, our decision is that their temple be restored to them and that they live in keeping with the customs of their ancestors.
26 Farai bene, dunque, ad inviare alcuni presso di essi e a dar loro la destra, affinché, conoscendo la nostra scelta, stiano di buon animo e attendano con piacere alla ripresa dei loro affari".	26 Accordingly, please send them messengers to give them our assurances of friendship, so that, when they learn of our decision, they may have nothing to worry about but may contentedly go about their own business."

28 Se state bene, è come noi vogliamo. Anche noi stiamo bene.	28 If you are well, it is what we desire. We too are in good health.
29 Menelao ci ha spiegato che voi volete far ritorno alle vostre occupazioni.	29 Menelaus has told us of your wish to return home and attend to your own affairs.

31 che i Giudei potranno far uso delle loro sostanze e delle loro leggi, come era anche prima, e nessuno di essi sarà molestato in nessuna maniera per gli errori commessi per ignoranza.	31 to observe their dietary laws and other laws, just as before, and none of the Jews shall be molested in any way for faults committed through ignorance.

36 Per le cose, invece, che egli ha giudicato di dover sottoporre al re, voi, dopo averle esaminate, mandateci subito qualcuno affinché provvediamo come meglio conviene per voi. Noi infatti proseguiamo per Antiochia.	36 But the matters on which he passed judgment should be submitted to the king. As soon as you have considered them, send someone to us with your decisions so that we may present them to your advantage, for we are on our way to Antioch.
37 Per la qual cosa affrettatevi a mandarci qualcuno affinché anche noi possiamo conoscere di quale opinione siete.	37 Make haste, then, to send us those who can inform us of your intentions.
