CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
For this reason, it is necessary for us to observe more thoroughly the things that we have heard, lest we let them slip away.1 Δια τουτο πρεπει ημεις να προσεχωμεν περισσοτερον εις οσα ηκουσαμεν, δια να μη εκπεσωμεν ποτε.
For if a word that was spoken through the Angels has been made firm, and every transgression and disobedience has received the recompense of a just retribution,2 Διοτι εαν ο λογος ο λαληθεις δι' αγγελων εγεινε βεβαιος, και πασα παραβασις και παρακοη ελαβε δικαιαν μισθαποδοσιαν,
in what way might we escape, if we neglect such a great salvation? For though initially it had begun to be described by the Lord, it was confirmed among us by those who heard him,3 πως ημεις θελομεν εκφυγει, εαν αμελησωμεν τοσον μεγαλην σωτηριαν; ητις αρχισασα να λαληται δια του Κυριου, εβεβαιωθη εις ημας υπο των ακουσαντων,
with God testifying to it by signs and wonders, and by various miracles, and by the pouring out of the Holy Spirit, in accord with his own will.4 και ο Θεος συνεπεμαρτυρει με σημεια και τερατα και με διαφορα θαυματα και με διανομας του Αγιου Πνευματος κατα την θελησιν αυτου.
For God did not subject the future world, about which we are speaking, to the Angels.5 Διοτι δεν υπεταξεν εις αγγελους την οικουμενην την μελλουσαν, περι της οποιας λαλουμεν.
But someone, in a certain place, has testified, saying: “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the Son of man, that you visit him?6 Εμαρτυρησε δε τις εν τινι μερει, λεγων? Τι ειναι ο ανθρωπος, ωστε να ενθυμησαι αυτον, Η ο υιος του ανθρωπου, ωστε να επισκεπτησαι αυτον;
You have reduced him to a little less than the Angels. You have crowned him with glory and honor, and you have set him over the works of your hands.7 Εκαμες αυτον ολιγον τι κατωτερον των αγγελων, με δοξαν και τιμην εστεφανωσας αυτον και κατεστησας αυτον επι τα εργα των χειρων σου?
You have subjected all things under his feet.” For in as much as he has subjected all things to him, he has left nothing not subject to him. But in the present time, we do not yet perceive that all things have been made subject to him.8 Παντα υπεταξας υποκατω των ποδων αυτου. Διοτι υποταξας εις αυτον τα παντα, δεν αφηκεν ουδεν ανυποτακτον εις αυτον. Τωρα ομως δεν βλεπομεν ετι τα παντα υποτεταγμενα εις αυτον?
Yet we understand that Jesus, who was reduced to a little less than the Angels, was crowned with glory and honor because of his Passion and death, in order that, by the grace of God, he might taste death for all.9 τον δε ολιγον τι παρα τους αγγελους ηλαττωμενον Ιησουν βλεπομεν δια το παθημα του θανατου με δοξαν και τιμην εστεφανωμενον, δια να γευθη θανατον υπερ παντος ανθρωπου δια της χαριτος του Θεου.
For it was fitting for him, because of whom and through whom all things exist, who had led many children into glory, to complete the authorship of their salvation through his Passion.10 Διοτι επρεπεν εις αυτον, δια τον οποιον ειναι τα παντα και δια του οποιου εγειναν τα παντα, φερων εις την δοξαν πολλους υιους, να καμη τελειον τον αρχηγον της σωτηριας αυτων δια των παθηματων.
For he who sanctifies, and those who are sanctified, are all from One. For this reason, he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying:11 Επειδη και ο αγιαζων και οι αγιαζομενοι εξ ενος ειναι παντες? δι' ην αιτιαν δεν επαισχυνεται να ονομαζη αυτους αδελφους,
“I will announce your name to my brothers. In the midst of the Church, I will praise you.”12 λεγων? Θελω απαγγειλει το ονομα σου προς τους αδελφους μου, εν μεσω εκκλησιας θελω σε υμνησει?
And again: “I will be faithful in him.” And again: “Behold, I and my children, whom God has given to me.”13 και παλιν? Εγω θελω εχει την πεποιθησιν μου επ' αυτον? και παλιν? Ιδου, εγω και τα παιδια, τα οποια μοι εδωκεν ο Θεος.
Therefore, because children have a common flesh and blood, he himself also, in like manner, has shared in the same, so that through death, he might destroy him who held the dominion of death, that is, the devil,14 Επειδη λοιπον τα παιδια εμεθεξαν απο σαρκος και αιματος, και αυτος παρομοιως μετελαβεν απο των αυτων, δια να καταργηση δια του θανατου τον εχοντα το κρατος του θανατου, τουτεστι τον διαβολον,
and so that he might free those who, through the fear of death, had been condemned to servitude throughout their entire life.15 και ελευθερωση εκεινους, οσοι δια τον φοβον του θανατου ησαν δια παντος του βιου υποκειμενοι εις την δουλειαν.
For at no time did he take hold of the Angels, but instead he took hold of the offspring of Abraham.16 Διοτι βεβαιως δεν ανελαβεν αγγελων φυσιν, αλλα σπερματος Αβρααμ ανελαβεν.
Therefore, it is fitting for him to be made similar to his brothers in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful High Priest before God, in order that he might bring forgiveness to the offenses of the people.17 Οθεν επρεπε να ομοιωθη κατα παντα με τους αδελφους, δια να γεινη ελεημων και πιστος αρχιερευς εις τα προς τον Θεον, δια να καμνη εξιλεωσιν υπερ των αμαρτιων του λαου.
For in as much as he himself has suffered and has been tempted, he also is able to assist those who are tempted.18 Επειδη καθ' οτι αυτος επαθε πειρασθεις, δυναται να βοηθηση τους πειραζομενους.
