Therefore, as most beloved sons, be imitators of God.1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
And walk in love, just as Christ also loved us and delivered himself for us, as an oblation and a sacrifice to God, with a fragrance of sweetness.2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.
But let not any kind of fornication, or impurity, or rapacity so much as be named among you, just as is worthy of the saints,3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!
nor any indecent, or foolish, or abusive talk, for this is without purpose; but instead, give thanks.4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.
For know and understand this: no one who is a fornicator, or lustful, or rapacious (for these are a kind of service to idols) holds an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.
Let no one seduce you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God was sent upon the sons of unbelief.6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.
Therefore, do not choose to become participants with them.7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.
For you were darkness, in times past, but now you are light, in the Lord. So then, walk as sons of the light.8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,
For the fruit of the light is in all goodness and justice and truth,9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.
affirming what is well-pleasing to God.10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,
And so, have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead, refute them.11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.
For the things that are done by them in secret are shameful, even to mention.12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;
But all things that are disputed are made manifest by the light. For all that is made manifest is light.13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated
Because of this, it is said: “You who are sleeping: awaken, and rise up from the dead, and so shall the Christ enlighten you.”14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.
And so, brothers, see to it that you walk cautiously, not like the foolish,15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.
but like the wise: atoning for this age, because this is an evil time.16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.
For this reason, do not choose to be imprudent. Instead, understand what is the will of God.17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.
And do not choose to be inebriated by wine, for this is self-indulgence. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.
speaking among yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual canticles, singing and reciting psalms to the Lord in your hearts,19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,
giving thanks always for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God the Father.20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Wives should be submissive to their husbands, as to the Lord.22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,
For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church. He is the Savior of his body.23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
Therefore, just as the Church is subject to Christ, so also should wives be subject to their husbands in all things.24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church and handed himself over for her,25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her
so that he might sanctify her, washing her clean by water and the Word of life,26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,
so that he might offer her to himself as a glorious Church, not having any spot or wrinkle or any such thing, so that she would be holy and immaculate.27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.
So, too, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.
For no man has ever hated his own flesh, but instead he nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ also does to the Church.29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,
For we are a part of his body, of his flesh and of his bones.30 because we are parts of his Body.
“For this reason, a man shall leave behind his father and mother, and he shall cling to his wife; and the two shall be as one flesh.”31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.
This is a great Sacrament. And I am speaking in Christ and in the Church.32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.
Yet truly, each and every one of you should love his wife as himself. And a wife should fear her husband.33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.
