CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Then calling together the twelve Apostles, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.1 Reunindo Jesus os doze apóstolos, deu-lhes poder e autoridade sobre todos os demônios, e para curar enfermidades.
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the infirm.2 Enviou-os a pregar o Reino de Deus e a curar os enfermos.
And he said to them: “You should take nothing for the journey, neither staff, nor traveling bag, nor bread, nor money; and you should not have two tunics.3 Disse-lhes: Não leveis coisa alguma para o caminho, nem bordão, nem mochila, nem pão, nem dinheiro, nem tenhais duas túnicas.
And into whatever house you shall enter, lodge there, and do not move away from there.4 Em qualquer casa em que entrardes, ficai ali até que deixeis aquela localidade.
And whoever will not have received you, upon departing from that city, shake off even the dust on your feet, as a testimony against them.”5 Onde ninguém vos receber, deixai aquela cidade e em testemunho contra eles sacudi a poeira dos vossos pés.
And going forth, they traveled around, through the towns, evangelizing and curing everywhere.6 Partiram, pois, e percorriam as aldeias, pregando o Evangelho e fazendo curas por toda parte.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all the things that were being done by him, but he doubted, because it was said7 O tetrarca Herodes ouviu falar de tudo o que Jesus fazia e ficou perplexo. Uns diziam: É João que ressurgiu dos mortos; outros: É Elias que apareceu;
by some, “For John has risen from the dead,” yet truly, by others, “For Elijah has appeared,” and by still others, “For one of the prophets from of old has risen again.”8 e ainda outros: É um dos antigos profetas que ressuscitou.
And Herod said: “I beheaded John. So then, who is this, about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.9 Mas Herodes dizia: Eu degolei João. Quem é, pois, este, de quem ouço tais coisas? E procurava ocasião de vê-lo.
And when the Apostles returned, they explained to him all the things that they had done. And taking them with him, he withdrew to a deserted place apart, which belongs to Bethsaida.10 Os apóstolos, ao voltarem, contaram a Jesus tudo o que haviam feito. Tomando-os ele consigo à parte, dirigiu-se a um lugar deserto para o lado de Betsaida.
But when the crowd had realized this, they followed him. And he received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God. And those who were in need of cures, he healed.11 Logo que a multidão o soube, o foi seguindo; Jesus recebeu-os e falava-lhes do Reino de Deus. Restabelecia também a saúde dos doentes.
Then the day began to decline. And drawing near, the twelve said to him: “Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the surrounding towns and villages, they may separate and find food. For we are here in a deserted place.”12 Ora, o dia começava a declinar e os Doze foram dizer-lhe: Despede as turbas, para que vão pelas aldeias e sítios da vizinhança e procurem alimento e hospedagem, porque aqui estamos num lugar deserto.
But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “There is with us no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we are to go and buy food for this entire multitude.”13 Jesus replicou-lhes: Dai-lhes vós mesmos de comer. Retrucaram eles: Não temos mais do que cinco pães e dois peixes, a menos que nós mesmos vamos e compremos mantimentos para todo este povo.
Now there were about five thousand men. So he said to his disciples, “Have them recline to eat in groups of fifty.”14 {Pois eram quase cinco mil homens.} Jesus disse aos discípulos: Mandai-os sentar, divididos em grupos de cinqüenta.
And they did so. And they caused them all to recline to eat.15 Assim o fizeram e todos se assentaram.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish, he gazed up to heaven, and he blessed and broke and distributed them to his disciples, in order to set them before the crowd.16 Então Jesus tomou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, levantou os olhos ao céu, abençoou-os, partiu-os e deu-os a seus discípulos, para que os servissem ao povo.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And twelve baskets of fragments were taken up, which were left over from them.17 E todos comeram e ficaram fartos. Do que sobrou recolheram ainda doze cestos de pedaços.
And it happened that, when he was praying alone, his disciples also were with him, and he questioned them, saying: “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”18 Num dia em que ele estava a orar a sós com os discípulos, perguntou-lhes: Quem dizem que eu sou?
But they answered by saying: “John the Baptist. But some say Elijah. Yet truly, others say that one of the prophets from before has risen again.”19 Responderam-lhe: Uns dizem que és João Batista; outros, Elias; outros pensam que ressuscitou algum dos antigos profetas.
Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Simon Peter said, “The Christ of God.”20 Perguntou-lhes, então: E vós, quem dizeis que eu sou? Pedro respondeu: O Cristo de Deus.
But speaking sharply to them, he instructed them not to tell this to anyone,21 Ordenou-lhes energicamente que não o dissessem a ninguém.
saying, “For the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the leaders of the priests and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day rise again.”22 Ele acrescentou: É necessário que o Filho do Homem padeça muitas coisas, seja rejeitado pelos anciãos, pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos escribas. É necessário que seja levado à morte e que ressuscite ao terceiro dia.
Then he said to everyone: “If anyone is willing to come after me: let him deny himself, and take up his cross every day, and follow me.23 Em seguida, dirigiu-se a todos: Se alguém quer vir após mim, renegue-se a si mesmo, tome cada dia a sua cruz e siga-me.
For whoever will have saved his life, will lose it. Yet whoever will have lost his life for my sake, will save it.24 Porque, quem quiser salvar a sua vida, perdê-la-á; mas quem sacrificar a sua vida por amor de mim, salvá-la-á.
For how does it benefit a man, if he were to gain the whole world, yet lose himself, or cause himself harm?25 Pois que aproveita ao homem ganhar o mundo inteiro, se vem a perder-se a si mesmo e se causa a sua própria ruína?
For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words: of him the Son of man will be ashamed, when he will have arrived in his majesty and that of his Father and of the holy Angels.26 Se alguém se envergonhar de mim e das minhas palavras, também o Filho do Homem se envergonhará dele, quando vier na sua glória, na glória de seu Pai e dos santos anjos.
And yet, I tell you a truth: There are some standing here who shall not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God.”27 Em verdade vos digo: dos que aqui se acham, alguns há que não morrerão, até que vejam o Reino de Deus.
And it happened that, about eight days after these words, he took Peter and James and John, and he ascended onto a mountain, so that he might pray.28 Passados uns oitos dias, Jesus tomou consigo Pedro, Tiago e João, e subiu ao monte para orar.
And while he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his vestment became white and shining.29 Enquanto orava, transformou-se o seu rosto e as suas vestes tornaram-se resplandecentes de brancura.
And behold, two men were talking with him. And these were Moses and Elijah, appearing in majesty.30 E eis que falavam com ele dois personagens: eram Moisés e Elias,
And they spoke of his departure, which he would accomplish at Jerusalem.31 que apareceram envoltos em glória, e falavam da morte dele, que se havia de cumprir em Jerusalém.
Yet truly, Peter and those who were with him were weighed down by sleep. And becoming alert, they saw his majesty and the two men who were standing with him.32 Entretanto, Pedro e seus companheiros tinham-se deixado vencer pelo sono; ao despertarem, viram a glória de Jesus e os dois personagens em sua companhia.
And it happened that, as these were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus: “Teacher, it is good for us to be here. And so, let us make three tabernacles: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what he was saying.33 Quando estes se apartaram de Jesus, Pedro disse: Mestre, é bom estarmos aqui. Podemos levantar três tendas: uma para ti, outra para Moisés e outra para Elias!... Ele não sabia o que dizia.
Then, as he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them. And as these were entering into the cloud, they were afraid.34 Enquanto ainda assim falava, veio uma nuvem e encobriu-os com a sua sombra; e os discípulos, vendo-os desaparecer na nuvem, tiveram um grande pavor.
And a voice came from the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved son. Listen to him.”35 Então da nuvem saiu uma voz: Este é o meu Filho muito amado; ouvi-o!
And while the voice was being uttered, Jesus was found to be alone. And they were silent and told no one, in those days, any of these things, which they had seen.36 E, enquanto ainda ressoava esta voz, achou-se Jesus sozinho. Os discípulos calaram-se e a ninguém disseram naqueles dias coisa alguma do que tinham visto.
But it happened on the following day that, as they were descending from the mountain, a great crowd met him.37 No dia seguinte, descendo eles do monte, veio ao encontro de Jesus uma grande multidão.
And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you, look kindly on my son, for he is my only son.38 Eis que um homem exclamou do meio da multidão: Mestre, rogo-te que olhes para meu filho, pois é o único que tenho.
And behold, a spirit takes hold of him, and he suddenly cries out, and it throws him down and convulses him, so that he foams. And though it tears him apart, it leaves him only with difficulty.39 Um espírito se apodera dele e subitamente dá gritos, lança-o por terra, agita-o com violência, fá-lo espumar e só o larga depois de o deixar todo ofegante.
And I asked your disciples to cast him out, and they were unable.”40 Pedi a teus discípulos que o expelissem, mas não o puderam fazer.
And in response, Jesus said: “O unfaithful and perverse generation! How long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here.”41 Respondeu Jesus: Ó geração incrédula e perversa, até quando estarei convosco e vos aturarei? Traze cá teu filho.
And as he was approaching him, the demon threw him down and convulsed him.42 E quando ele ia chegando, o demônio lançou-o por terra e agitou-o violentamente. Mas Jesus intimou o espírito imundo, curou o menino e o restituiu a seu pai.
And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and he healed the boy, and he restored him to his father.43 Todos ficaram pasmados ante a grandeza de Deus. Como todos se admirassem de tudo o que Jesus fazia, disse ele a seus discípulos:
And all were astonished at the greatness of God. And as everyone was wondering over all that he was doing, he said to his disciples: “You must set these words in your hearts. For it shall be that the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.”44 Gravai nos vossos corações estas palavras: O Filho do Homem há de ser entregue às mãos dos homens!
But they did not understood this word, and it was concealed from them, so that they did not perceive it. And they were afraid to question him about this word.45 Eles, porém, não entendiam esta palavra e era-lhes obscura, de modo que não alcançaram o seu sentido; e tinham medo de lhe perguntar a este respeito.
Now an idea entered into them, as to which of them was greater.46 Veio-lhes então o pensamento de qual deles seria o maior.
But Jesus, perceiving the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and stood him beside him.47 Penetrando Jesus nos pensamentos de seus corações, tomou um menino, colocou-o junto de si e disse-lhes:
And he said to them: “Whoever will receive this child in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. For whoever is the lesser among you all, the same is greater.”48 Todo o que recebe este menino em meu nome, a mim é que recebe; e quem recebe a mim, recebe aquele que me enviou; pois quem dentre vós for o menor, esse será grande.
And responding, John said: “Teacher, we saw a certain one casting out demons in your name. And we prohibited him, for he does not follow with us.”49 João tomou a palavra e disse: Mestre, vimos um homem que expelia demônios em teu nome, e nós lho proibimos, porque não é dos nossos.
And Jesus said to him: “Do not prohibit him. For whoever is not against you, is for you.”50 Mas Jesus lhe disse: Não lho proibais; porque, o que não é contra vós, é a vosso favor.
Now it happened that, while the days of his dissipation were being completed, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.51 Aproximando-se o tempo em que Jesus devia ser arrebatado deste mundo, ele resolveu dirigir-se a Jerusalém.
And he sent messengers before his face. And going on, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.52 Enviou diante de si mensageiros que, tendo partido, entraram em uma povoação dos samaritanos para lhe arranjar pousada.
And they would not receive him, because his face was going toward Jerusalem.53 Mas não o receberam, por ele dar mostras de que ia para Jerusalém.
And when his disciples, James and John, had seen this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call for fire to descend from heaven and consume them?”54 Vendo isto, Tiago e João disseram: Senhor, queres que mandemos que desça fogo do céu e os consuma?
And turning, he rebuked them, saying: “Do you not know of whose spirit you are?55 Jesus voltou-se e repreendeu-os severamente. {Não sabeis de que espírito sois animados.
The Son of man came, not to destroy lives, but to save them.” And they went into another town.56 O Filho do Homem não veio para perder as vidas dos homens, mas para salvá-las.} Foram então para outra povoação.
And it happened that, as they were walking along the way, someone said to him, “I will follow you, wherever you will go.”57 Enquanto caminhavam, um homem lhe disse: Senhor, seguir-te-ei para onde quer que vás.
Jesus said to him: “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests. But the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”58 Jesus replicou-lhe: As raposas têm covas e as aves do céu, ninhos, mas o Filho do Homem não tem onde reclinar a cabeça.
Then he said to another, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”59 A outro disse: Segue-me. Mas ele pediu: Senhor, permite-me ir primeiro enterrar meu pai.
And Jesus said to him: “Let the dead bury their dead. But you go and announce the kingdom of God.”60 Mas Jesus disse-lhe: Deixa que os mortos enterrem seus mortos; tu, porém, vai e anuncia o Reino de Deus.
And another said: “I will follow you, Lord. But permit me first to explain this to those of my house.”61 Um outro ainda lhe falou: Senhor, seguir-te-ei, mas permite primeiro que me despeça dos que estão em casa.
Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow, and then looks back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”62 Mas Jesus disse-lhe: Aquele que põe a mão no arado e olha para trás, não é apto para o Reino de Deus.
