Matthew 22

1 And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:	1 Jesus tornou a falar-lhes por meio de parábolas:
2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.	2 The kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who made a wedding feast for his son,
3 And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.	3 and sent his bondmen to call the persons invited to the wedding feast, and they would not come.
4 Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’	4 Again he sent other bondmen, saying, Say to the persons invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatted beasts are killed, and all things ready; come to the wedding feast.
5 But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.	5 But they made light of it, and went, one to his own land, and another to his commerce.
6 Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.	6 And the rest, laying hold of his bondmen, ill-treated and slew {them}.
7 But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.	7 And {when} the king {heard of it he} was wroth, and having sent his forces, destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
8 Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.	8 Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy;
9 Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’	9 go therefore into the thoroughfares of the highways, and as many as ye shall find invite to the wedding feast.
10 And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.	10 And those bondmen went out into the highways, and brought together all as many as they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was furnished with guests.
11 Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.	11 And the king, having gone in to see the guests, beheld there a man not clothed with a wedding garment.
12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.	12 And he says to him, {My} friend, how camest thou in here not having on a wedding garment? But he was speechless.
13 Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.	13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ”	14 For many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
15 Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.	15 And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not men?s person;
16 And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.	16 tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
17 Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”	17 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites?
18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?	18 Shew me the money of the tribute. And they presented to him a denarius.
19 Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.	19 And he says to them, Whose {is} this image and superscription?
20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”	20 They say to him, Caesar?s. Then he says to them, Pay then what is Caesar?s to Caesar, and what is God?s to God.
21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”	21 And when they heard {him}, they wondered, and left him, and went away.
22 And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.	22 saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and shall raise up seed to his brother.
23 In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,	23 Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife to his brother.
24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.	24 In like manner also the second and the third, unto the seven.
25 Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:	25 And last of all the woman also died.
26 similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.	26 In the resurrection therefore of which of the seven shall she be wife, for all had her?
27 And last of all, the woman also passed away.	27 And Jesus answering said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.
28 In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”	28 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven.
29 But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.	29 Quanto à ressurreição dos mortos, não lestes o que Deus vos disse:
30 For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.	30 Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac e o Deus de Jacó {Ex 3,6}? Ora, ele não é Deus dos mortos, mas Deus dos vivos.
31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:	31 E, ouvindo esta doutrina, as turbas se enchiam de grande admiração.
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”	32 Sabendo os fariseus que Jesus reduzira ao silêncio os saduceus, reuniram-se
33 And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.	33 e um deles, doutor da lei, fez-lhe esta pergunta para pô-lo à prova:
34 But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.	34 Mestre, qual é o maior mandamento da lei?
35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:	35 Respondeu Jesus: Amarás o Senhor teu Deus de todo teu coração, de toda tua alma e de todo teu espírito {Dt 6,5}.
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”	36 Este é o maior e o primeiro mandamento.
37 Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’	37 E o segundo, semelhante a este, é: Amarás teu próximo como a ti mesmo {Lv 19,18}.
38 This is the greatest and first commandment.	38 Nesses dois mandamentos se resumem toda a lei e os profetas.
39 But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’	39 Como os fariseus se agrupassem, Jesus interrogou-os:
40 On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”	40 Que pensais vós de Cristo? De quem é filho? Responderam: De Davi!
41 Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,	41 Como então, prosseguiu Jesus, Davi, falando sob inspiração do Espírito, chama-o Senhor, dizendo:
42 saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”	42 O Senhor disse a meu Senhor: Senta-te à minha direita, até que eu ponha teus inimigos por escabelo dos teus pés {Sl 109,1}?
43 He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:	43 Se, pois, Davi o chama Senhor, como é ele seu filho?
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’	44 Ninguém pôde responder-lhe nada. E, depois daquele dia, ninguém mais ousou interrogá-lo.
45 So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”
46 And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.
