I will stand firm during my watch, and fix my position over the fortification. And I will observe carefully, to see what might be said to me and what I might respond to my opponent.1 En mi puesto de guardia me pondré, me plantaré en mi muro, y otearé para ver lo que él me dice, lo que responde a mi querella.
And the Lord responded to me and said: Write the vision and explain it on tablets, so that he who reads it may run through it.2 Y me respondió Yahveh y dijo: «Escribe la visión, ponla clara en tablillas para que se pueda leer de corrido.
For as yet the vision is far off, and it will appear in the end, and it will not lie. If it expresses any delay, wait for it. For it is arriving and it will arrive, and it will not be hindered.3 Porque es aún visión para su fecha, aspira ella al fin y no defrauda; si se tarda, espérala, pues vendrá ciertamente, sin retraso.
Behold, he who is unbelieving, his soul will not be right within himself; but he who is just shall live in his faith.4 «He aquí que sucumbe quien no tiene el alma recta, más el justo por su fidelidad vivirá».
And in the manner that wine deceives the heavy drinker, so will the arrogant man be deceived, and he will not be honored. He has enlarged his life like hellfire, and himself like death, and he is never fulfilled. And he will gather to himself all nations, and he will amass for himself all peoples.5 ¡Oh, ciertamente es traidora la riqueza! ¡Es hombre fatuo y no tendrá éxito el que ensancha como el seol sus fauces; como la muerte, él nunca se sacia, reúne para sí todas las naciones, acapara para sí los pueblos todos!
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and an enigmatic utterance about him? And it will be said, “Woe to him who increases what is not his own.” How long, then, will he lay down dense clay against himself?6 ¿No profetizarán todos éstos sobre él una sátira, adivinanzas y enigmas sobre él? Dirán: ¡Ay de quien amontona lo que no es suyo (¿hasta cuándo?) y se carga de prendas empeñadas!
Shall they not suddenly rise up, who would bite you, and be stirred up, who would tear you, so that you will be a prey for them?7 ¿No se alzarán de repente tus acreedores, no se despertarán tus vejadores, y serás presa de ellos?
Because you have despoiled many peoples, all those who are left of the people shall despoil you, because of the blood of men, and the iniquity of the earth, of the city and all who dwell therein.8 Por haber saqueado a naciones numerosas, te saqueará a ti todo el resto de los pueblos, por la sangre del hombre y la violencia a la tierra, a la ciudad y a todos los que la habitan.
Woe to him who gathers together an evil greed for his house, so that his nest may be exalted, and thinking that he might free himself from the hand of evil.9 ¡Ay de quien gana ganancia inmoral para su casa, para poner su nido en alto y escapar a la garra del mal!
You have devised confusion for your house, you have cut to pieces many peoples, and your soul has sinned.10 ¡Vergüenza para tu casa has sentenciado: al derribar a muchos pueblos, contra ti mismo pecas!
For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the wood that is between the joints of the building will respond.11 Porque la piedra grita desde el muro, y la viga desde el maderamen le responde.
Woe to him who builds a town with blood and prepares a city by iniquity.12 ¡Ay de quien edifica una ciudad con sangre, y funda un pueblo en la injusticia!
Are not these things before the Lord of hosts? For the people will labor amid a great fire, and the nations will labor in emptiness, and they will fail.13 ¿No viene de Yahveh Sebaot que los pueblos se fatiguen para el fuego y las gentes se agoten para nada?
For the earth shall be filled, that they might know the glory of the Lord, like the waters spreading over the sea.14 ¡Pues la tierra se llenará del conocimiento de la gloria de Yahveh, como las aguas cubren el mar!
Woe to anyone who gives a drink to a friend, releasing a drug and inebriating, so as to look upon their nakedness.15 ¡Ay del que da de beber a sus vecinos, y les añade su veneno hasta embriagarlos, para mirar su desnudez!
You are filled with disgrace in place of glory. So then, drink and fall fast asleep, for the cup of the right hand of the Lord will surround you, and a disgraceful vomit will cover your glory.16 ¡Te has saciado de ignominia, no de gloria! ¡Bebe tú también y enseña tu prepucio! ¡A ti se vuelve el cáliz de la diestra de Yahveh, y la ignominia sobre tu gloria!
For the iniquity of Lebanon will cover you, and the devastation of animals which will deter them from the blood of men, and the iniquity of the earth and the city, and of all who dwell therein.17 Pues la violencia hecha al Líbano te cubrirá y la matanza de los animales te aterrará, (por la sangre del hombre y la violencia a la tierra, a la ciudad y a todos los que la habitan).
Of what benefit is the graven image? For its maker has formed it, a molten and imaginary deception. For its maker has hoped in a figment of his own creation, so as to make a dumb likeness.18 ¿De qué sirve una escultura para que su autor la esculpa, una imagen fundida, un oráculo engañoso, para que en ellos confíe el autor de tal obra haciendo ídolos mudos?
Woe to him who says to wood, “Awaken,” to the silent stone, “Arise.” Is it able to teach? Behold, it has been entirely covered with gold and silver; and there is no spirit at all in its inner workings.19 ¡Ay de quien dice al madero: «Despierta», «Levántate», a la piedra muda! ¿Da ello algún oráculo? ¡Está, sí, cubierto de oro y plata, pero ni un soplo en su interior!
But the Lord is in his holy temple. May all the earth be silent before his face.20 Mas Yahveh está en su santo Templo: ¡silencio ante él, tierra entera!
