“And as for you, take up a lament over the leaders of Israel,1 Tu vas prononcer une lamentation sur les princes d’Israël.
and you shall say: Why did your mother, the lioness, recline among the male lions, and raise her little ones in the midst of young lions?2 Tu diras: Quelle lionne était ta mère au milieu des lions! Elle se couchait entre ses petits et les nourrissait.
And she led away one of her little ones, and he became a lion. And he learned to seize prey and to consume men.3 Elle éleva un de ses petits qui devint un jeune lion, il apprit à déchirer la proie et à dévorer les hommes.
And the Gentiles heard about him, and they seized him, but not without receiving wounds. And they led him away in chains to the land of Egypt.4 Mais les nations entendirent parler de lui, il fut capturé dans leur fosse et on le mena en Égypte enchaîné.
Then, when she had seen that she was weakened, and that her hope had perished, she took one of her little ones, and appointed him as a lion.5 La lionne fut déçue, ses espoirs étaient perdus; elle prit un autre de ses petits dont elle fit un jeune lion.
And he advanced among the lions, and he became a lion. And he learned to seize prey and to devour men.6 Comme un jeune lion, il alla avec les lions; il apprit à déchirer la proie et à dévorer les hommes.
He learned to make widows, and to lead their citizens into the desert. And the land, with its plenitude, was made desolate by the voice of his roaring.7 Il détruisit leurs palais, il ravagea leurs villes, son rugissement terrorisait le pays et ses habitants.
And the Gentiles came together against him, on every side, from the provinces, and they spread their net over him; by their wounds, he was captured.8 Des étrangers sont venus l’attaquer de toutes leurs provinces; ils ont tendu sur lui leurs filets, il est tombé dans leur fosse.
And they put him into a cage; they led him in chains to the king of Babylon. And they cast him into a prison, so that his voice would no longer be heard upon the mountains of Israel.9 On l’a mis en cage avec des anneaux, on l’a conduit à Babylone ( ) où on l’a fait garder: on n’entendra plus sa voix sur les montagnes d’Israël!
Your mother is like a vine, in your blood, planted by the water; her fruit and her branches have increased because of many waters.10 Ta mère était comme une vigne plantée au bord de l’eau, une vigne fertile et verdoyante car l’eau ne manquait pas.
And her strong branches were made into scepters for the rulers, and her stature was exalted among the branches. And she saw her own loftiness among the multitude of her branches.11 Elle a même donné une branche assez forte pour faire un sceptre de roi. Elle a grandi jusqu’aux nuages; on admirait sa hauteur et son feuillage bien fourni.
But she was uprooted in wrath, and cast upon the ground. And the burning wind dried up her fruit. Her robust branches withered and were dried up. A fire consumed her.12 Mais on l’a arrachée avec colère et jetée à terre, le vent d’est a desséché ses fruits qui sont tombés. La branche vigoureuse s’est desséchée, le feu l’a dévorée.
And now she has been transplanted into the desert, into a land impassable and dry.13 La voici maintenant plantée dans une terre aride, au désert.
And a fire has gone forth from a rod of her branches, which has consumed her fruit. And there is no strong branch in her to become a scepter for the rulers. This is a lamentation, and it shall be a lamentation.”14 (Un feu sorti de son tronc a dévoré branches et fruits.) La branche vigoureuse, le sceptre royal, c’est fini pour elle. C’est bien une lamentation, et voilà comment on se lamentera.
