1 For your judgments, O Lord, are great, and your words are indescribable. Therefore, undisciplined souls have wandered astray.	1 Grandi sono i tuoi giudizi, o Signore, e ineffabili le tue parole; per questo le anime senza istru­zione caddero in errore.
2 For, while they managed to convince the unjust, so as to obtain dominion over the holy nation, they themselves were fettered with chains of darkness and of endless night, enclosed in their houses, fugitives of everlasting providence, lying in ruins.	2 Mentre gli empi eran persuasi di poter opprimere il popolo santo, inca­tenati nelle tenebre, inceppati nella lunga notte, chiusi dentro le case, giacevano esclusi dall'e­terna Provvidenza.
3 And, while they thought to escape notice in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of oblivion, being horribly afraid, and having been disturbed with great astonishment.	3 E mentre credevano di poter restar nasco­sti nei loro segreti peccati, sotto il tenebroso velo dell'oblio, furon dispersi, orrendamente spaven­tati e agitati dal più grande sbi­gottimento.
4 For neither did the cave which enclosed them preserve them from fear, because descending noises disturbed them, and the sorrowful persons appearing to them intensified their fear.	4 E nemmeno la spe­lonca che li chiudeva li preserva­va dalla paura, perchè scendevan dei rumori a spaventarli, e lugubri spettri, loro apparendo, incutevan terrore.
5 And, indeed, even fire had no strength to provide them light, nor could the clear flames of the stars illuminate that horrible night.	5 E non v'era nessun fuoco capace di far loro lume, e nemmeno il chiaro splendore del­le stelle poteva illuminare quella orrenda notte.
6 Yet there appeared to them a sudden fire, filled with fear; and, having been struck with the fear of that face which is unseen, they considered those things which they did see to be worse,	6 Ma appariva loro un certo improvviso bagliore che faceva paura, e, spaventati da quella visione che mal vedevano, stimavan peggiori le cose che comparivano.
7 and, having been ridiculed, the illusions were removed from their arts along with their contemptuous rebuke of glorious wisdom.	7 E le ciurmerie dell'arte magica eran derise, e la vantata sapienza fu screditata con ignominia.
8 Indeed, those who promised to drive away fears and disturbances from a languishing soul, though they were filled with derision, were themselves languishing in fear.	8 Infatti quelli che promettevano di cacciar le paure e le in quietudini dagli animi ab­battuti, essi stessi languivano scherniti, pieni di spavento.
9 And, even if nothing unnatural disturbed them, yet being agitated by the passing of animals and the hissing of snakes, they died of fear, denying what they themselves saw even in the air, which no one thinks to be able to escape.	9 E sebbene nulla di mostruoso li at­terrisse, sbigottiti dal passar delle bestie e dal fischiar dei serpenti, morivan di tremarella, rifiutan­do perfino di veder l'aria, che nessuno può schivare.
10 For, while there may be apprehension with wickedness, it gives testimony to condemnation, for a troubled conscience always forecasts harshness.	10 Così la malvagità colla paura dà testi­monianza per la sua condanna, sempre presagisce cose terribili per l'agitata coscienza.
11 For fear is nothing else but unfaithfulness to thinking helpful things.	11 Infatti la paura non è altro che l'abban­dono dei soccorsi della ragione.
12 And, while expectation is driven from within, the cause of this is supposing that one is great in knowledge, and as a result, conflict excels.	12 E quanto meno s'aspetta, dal di dentro, tanto più s'ingrandisce l'ignota causa da cui viene il tor­mento.
13 Yet those who were truly powerless that night, being overcome by both the vilest and the deepest hell, were sleeping the same sleep,	13 Quelli poi, in quella not­te veramente d'impotenza e sbu­cata addosso a loro dal più pro­fondo dell'inferno, assopiti nel medesimo sonno,
14 sometimes stirred up by the fear of unnatural things, other times sinking down in disgrace of soul, for a sudden and unexpected fear overcame them.	14 ora erano agitati dallo spavento dei mostri, ora, venivan meno per l'abbatti­mento dell'animo, colti da im­provviso e inaspettato terrore.
15 Then, if any among them had fallen away, he was kept in a prison without bars which had been left open.	15 Inoltre, se uno di loro cadeva, era fermato e chiuso in prigione, senza catene.
16 For if a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker in a field of labor were suddenly overcome, he endured an inescapable necessity.	16 Chiunque fosse, agricoltore, pastore, o operaio occupato in lavori agricoli, era oppresso da inevitabile necessi­tà.
17 For they were all bound together with one chain of darkness. Or if there were a whistling wind, or the sweet sound of birds among the thick tree branches, or the force of water rushing excessively,	17 La medesima catena delle tenebre teneva tutti avvinti: il vento che soffiava, il soave canto degli uccelli tra i folti rami degli alberi, l'impetuoso precipitar del­l'acqua corrente,
18 or the strong noise of rocks crashing down, or the scattering of playful animals having been seen, or the strong voice of bellowing beasts, or the resounding of the highest mountain echo, these things made them sink down because of fear.	18 il forte rumo­re di pietre cadenti, l'invisibile scorrazzar di animali saltellanti, la potente voce di bestie mug­genti, e l'eco, ripercossa dai più alti monti, li faceva venir meno dalla paura.
19 For the whole world was enlightened with a clear light, and none were being hindered in their labors.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato da vivida luce, ed era occupato senza ostacoli nei suoi lavori.
20 But then, the heavy night was placed over the sun for them, an image of that darkness which was about to overcome them. Yet they were more grievous to themselves than was the darkness.	20 Soltanto sopra di loro pesava la profonda notte, imagine delle tenebre che poi dovevan piombar loro addosso. Ed essi erano a se stessi più gravosi di quelle tenebre.
