Now it happened that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in his place.1 Après cela, il advint que Nahash, roi des Ammonites, mourut et que son fils régna à sa place.
And David said: “I will act with mercy toward Hanun, the son of Nahash. For his father was gracious to me.” And so David sent messengers to console him over the death of his father. But when they had reached the land of the sons of Ammon, so that they might console Hanun,2 David se dit: "J'agirai avec bonté envers Hanûn, fils de Nahash, parce que son père a agi avecbonté envers moi." Et David envoya des messagers lui présenter des condoléances au sujet de son père. Maislorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent au pays des Ammonites, auprès de Hanûn, à l'occasion de cescondoléances,
the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun: “Do you think that perhaps David has sent them to console you in order to honor your father? Have you not noticed that his servants came to you so that they might explore, and investigate, and examine your land?”3 les princes des Ammonites dirent à Hanûn: "T'imagines-tu que David veuille honorer tonpère parce qu'il t'a envoyé des porteurs de condoléances? N'est-ce pas plutôt pour explorer, renverser etespionner le pays que ses serviteurs sont venus à toi?"
And so Hanun shaved the heads and beards of the servants of David, and he cut away their tunics from the buttocks to the feet, and he sent them away.4 Alors Hanûn se saisit des serviteurs de David, il les rasa et coupa leurs vêtements à mi-hauteur jusqu'aux fesses, puis les congédia.
And when they had gone, and had sent word to David, (for they had suffered a great disgrace,) he sent to meet them, and he instructed them that they should remain at Jericho until their beards grew, and then they should return.5 On alla informer David de ce qui était arrivé à ces hommes: il envoya quelqu'un à leurrencontre, car ces gens étaient couverts de honte, et le roi leur fit dire: "Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votrebarbe ait repoussé, puis vous reviendrez."
Then, when the sons of Ammon realized that they had committed an injury against David, both Hanun and the rest of the people sent one thousand talents of silver, so that they might hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, and from Syrian Maacah, and from Zobah.6 Les Ammonites virent bien qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David; Hanûn et les Ammonitesenvoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde des Araméens de Mésopotamie, des Araméens deMaaka et des gens de Coba, chars et charriers.
And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people. When these had arrived, they made camp in the region opposite Medeba. Also, the sons of Ammon, gathering from their cities, went to war.7 Ils prirent à leur solde le roi de Maaka, ses troupes, et 32.000 chars; ils vinrent camper devantMédba tandis que les Ammonites, après avoir quitté leurs villes et s'être rassemblés, arrivaient pour la bataille.
And when David had heard this, he sent Joab and the entire army of strong men.8 A cette nouvelle, David envoya Joab avec toute l'armée, les preux.
And the sons of Ammon, going out, set up a battle line before the gate of the city. But the kings who had come to their aid stood separately in the field.9 Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la ville, mais les rois quiétaient venus étaient à part en rase campagne.
And so Joab, understanding the war to be set facing him and behind his back, chose the strongest men from all of Israel, and he went out against the Syrians.10 Voyant qu'il avait un front de combat à la fois devant et derrière lui, Joab fit choix de toutel'élite d'Israël et la mit en ligne face aux Araméens.
But the remaining portion of the people he placed under the hand of his brother Abishai. And they went out against the sons of Ammon.11 Il confia à son frère Abishaï le reste de l'armée et le mit en ligne face aux Ammonites.
And he said: “If the Syrians prevail over me, then you shall be a help to me. But if the sons of Ammon prevail over you, I will be a safeguard for you.12 Il dit: "Si les Araméens l'emportent sur moi, tu viendras à mon secours; si les Ammonitesl'emportent sur toi, je te secourrai.
Be strengthened, and let us act manfully on behalf of our people, and on behalf of the cities of our God. And the Lord will do what is good in his own sight.”13 Aie bon courage et montrons-nous forts pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu!et que Yahvé fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!"
Therefore, Joab, and the people who were with him, went out to battle against the Syrians. And he put them to flight.14 Joab et la troupe qui était avec lui engagèrent le combat contre les Araméens, qui lâchèrentpied devant eux.
Then the sons of Ammon, seeing that the Syrians had fled, also themselves fled from Abishai, his brother, and they entered into the city. And now Joab returned to Jerusalem.15 Quand les Ammonites virent que les Araméens avaient fui, ils lâchèrent pied à leur tourdevant Abishaï, le frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Alors Joab retourna à Jérusalem.
But the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and they brought the Syrians who were across the river. And Shophach, the leader of the military of Hadadezer, was their commander.16 Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, les Araméens envoyèrent des messagers etmobilisèrent les Araméens qui sont de l'autre côté du Fleuve; Shophak, général de Hadadézer, était à leur tête.
When this had been reported to David, he gathered together all of Israel, and he crossed the Jordan. And he rushed toward them. And he set up a battle line facing them. And they fought against him.17 Cela fut rapporté à David qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, les atteignit et pritposition près d'eux. Puis David se rangea en ordre de combat en face des Araméens, qui lui livrèrent bataille.
But the Syrians fled from Israel. And David killed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand men on foot, and Shophach, the leader of the army.18 Mais les Araméens lâchèrent pied devant Israël et David leur tua 7.000 attelages et 40.000hommes de pied; il fit aussi périr Shophak le général.
Then the servants of Hadadezer, seeing themselves to be overwhelmed by Israel, crossed over to David, and they served him. And Syria was no longer willing to offer aid to the sons of Ammon.19 Quand les vassaux de Hadadézer se virent battus devant Israël, ils firent la paix avec Davidet lui furent assujettis. Les Araméens ne voulurent plus porter secours aux Ammonites.
